Top Philanthropic Donors: Meyer and Renee Luskin
Mr. Luskin is chairman of Scope Industries, a Santa Monica, Calif., company that manufactures an animal-feed ingredient from recycled bakery waste.
Mr. Luskin, 85, and his wife, Renee, 78, pledged $100-million to the University of California at Los Angeles.
Of the total, $50-million will endow the university’s School of Public Affairs; $40-million will help pay for a new building to house a conference center, guest quarters, and a faculty club; and $10-million will endow a speakers series.
Both the public-affairs school and the new building will be named for the Luskins. The couple have paid $22-million toward their pledge and plan to pay off the rest over the next few years.
They also gave $500,000 in 2010 to the University of California at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine.
The Luskins are UCLA alumni and met while they were students there. Both earned bachelor’s degrees at the institution: Mr. Luskin earned his in economics in 1949, and Ms. Luskin earned hers in sociology in 1953.

Clowning Around With Fundraising
What exactly does a dress code of “clown formal” mean? For an April Fools Extravaganza, hosted by the nonprofit Clowns Without Borders, guests showed up in everything from glittery jumpsuits to cow costumes and mime outfits. Held at local restaurant and beginning at 10 p.m., the party was the first major D.C. fund-raiser for this San Francisco-based international charity, which sends clowns and circus performers to entertain children in crisis zones and refugee camps around the world. Charging $15 per ticket, the event raised almost $10,000 for the group’s upcoming trip to Sudan.
For the 700 guests who didn’t arrive in rainbow wigs, volunteers passed out red foam noses and clown masks at the door to get partygoers into the circus spirit, with a suggested donation.
Approximately 30 performers from the Washington metropolitan area and Philadelphia volunteered their time for the event, including circus performers (think hoola hoop dancers, a giant paper mâché puppet, and clowns, of course) and a dance group who performed in blacklight-reactive costumes.
In keeping with the event’s community art focus, the performances were casual and staged alongside guests on both levels of the venue. The group scheduled fire dancers as additional entertainment, but at the last minute the fire marshal pulled the plug on that plan. In the end, the only pyrotechnics were lighted batons and glowsticks, as the crowd danced till 2:30 a.m. to house and electro tunes from four DJs.
If your group doesn’t have the resources to hold this type of fundraiser we think you will find Sunset Coupon Books as a great idea for your group in the Phoenix Metro, Tucson or Salt Lake City area.
Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.

School Fundraising Ideas You May Not Have Thought Of
Collecting For Cash
Gather recyclable or “upcyclable” items and send them to a reputable collector. For example, Terracycle, takes candy wrappers, old keyboards, mice, all of which will then be used to make new products. Some places will give you cash for your used printer cartridges, cell phones, and other small electronics that can be remanufactured and reused in order to keep them out of landfills.
Auctions
They can be silent like a Chinese auction, or live like a photography auction. You can even raffle off tickets for the best parking spot at school. Hosts an Annual Art Auction at your school. Each class creates a unique piece of art that gets sold to the highest bidder. This fundraiser can erupt into a massive bidding war, as many parents vie to own their child’s artwork.
Competitions
Many schools enjoy channeling competitive energy into fundraising contests between classrooms, grades, or rival schools. The class that collects the most printer cartridges gets or a week of casual dress passes. How about having the student groups get creative by designing shirts surrounding a chosen theme. The most shirts get a pizza party. By providing some sort of special incentive, you will see a noticeable difference in people and their willingness to get involved.
Events
Hold a dinner where students serve the food for their parents and donors, or host a movie day were your school transforms into a theater for the students, who pay to watch brand new films, sometimes before they have even had a chance to see them in the theater! Candy and popcorn are also sold for some extra profit. These kinds of events can be fun and very beneficial to your budget with enough participation.
Loyalty Programs
Companies like Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education donate money to organizations when they receive proof of purchase from their products. Escrip also offers such a program, where parents can register their credit and debit cards to rack up points for their school just by shopping as they always have.

Tie Fundraising To Topical Themes
Many times we hear that there isn’t anything that a fundraising project can be tied to. One of those “There is nothing new under the sun” thoughts. While there is some truth to the idea of “nothing new” that doesn’t mean there aren’t current topics that can be used to help raise funds.
As this is written Spring has sprung and there are meaning uses of spring and rebirth ideas that can be worked into a fundraiser.
With Easter just days away there is a great celebration that could have been worked into a fundraiser for your church group or even used for a any group that wants to have a Christian or Jewish religious fundraiser. Easter can also use the Easter Egg hunt or lighter Bunny related themes.
If you have a sports group you could do a “March Madness” basketball related projects. Any sports group could be working around this time. When you have a need to raise funds you can find many related events to tie to.
With election of a new Pope there are many themes that a Catholic school or church group to tie into. You could welcome the new pontiff to the community (symbolically). With this new Pope’s own theme of service to the poor you could not ask for any better relationship for Fundraisers.
Now that you have several timely ideas for themes can we take a moment and suggest that you consider Sunset Coupon Books as the vehicle for that next fundraising project.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Paul G. Allen
Paul Gardner Allen, born January 21, 1953, is an American inventor, investor and philanthropist, best known as the co-founder, with Bill Gates, of Microsoft Corporation. As of March 2012, he was estimated to be the 48th-richest person in the world, with an estimated wealth of $14.2 billion.
He is the founder and chairman of Vulcan Inc., which manages his various business and philanthropic efforts. Allen also has a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio which includes technology companies, real estate holdings, and stakes in other technology, media, and content companies.
Allen also owns two professional sports teams, the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League, and the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association. He is also part-owner of the Seattle Sounders FC, which joined Major League Soccer in 2009.
Allen's memoir Idea Man: A Memoir by the Cofounder of Microsoft was released on April 19, 2011. The paperback version of Idea Man, which included a new epilogue, came out on October 30, 2012.
Along with his sister Jo Lynn, Allen pledged $100 million in 2003 to found the Allen Institute for Brain Science, a nonprofit corporation (501(c) (3)) and medical research organization. Utilizing the mouse model system (given its great similarity to human DNA), 20,000 genes in the adult mouse brain were mapped to a cellular level for the Allen Brain Atlas. The data generated from this effort is contained in the free and publicly available Allen Brain Atlas application.
On July 16, 2008, Allen launched a $41 million online "Allen Spinal Cord Atlas" mouse gene map. Allan Jones, chief scientific officer, said: "The Allen Spinal Cord Atlas offers profound potential for researchers to unlock the mysteries of the spinal cord and how it is altered during disease or injury." The spinal cord atlas is set up like the Allen Institute's earlier atlas of the mouse brain. The Map could reveal new treatments for human neurological disorders. The map points researchers toward places where genes are active.
On May 24, 2010, Allen launched the Allen Human Brain Atlas, a publicly available online atlas charting genes at work throughout the human brain. The data provided represent the most extensive and detailed body of information about gene activity in the human brain to date, documenting which genes are expressed, or "turned on" where.
A report in February, 2012, named Allen as the most charitable living American in 2011. Allen's donations, totaling $372.6 million, were beat out by only two others, both of them are deceased.
In March 2012 he continued the funding of the Allen Institute for Brain Science with a contribution of $300 million to look at how we see.
Let Sunset Coupons help you with your fundraising somewhat smaller fundraising projects for your school group, church, charity, team or non-profit. To finds out more about Sunset Coupons please call 800-627-6340.

Fundraising Don’ts
Don’t Be Afraid To Ask
Don’t let fear get in your way and don’t be afraid to ask. This is what the point behind the fundraising, asking for a donation. Some people feel that asking for money is somehow demoralizing or shameless but you have to take yourself out of the process. Your group depends on you to go out there and convince others of the legitimacy of your goals. And don’t scoff at any size donation. Every penny and dollar helps. And sometimes, yes, you’re going to have to come right out and ask for money so get comfortable with the concept from the very start.
Don’t Judge Others On Their Level of Giving
You may be convinced of the importance and worth of your personal cause but realize that there are other people out there that feel the same way about their cause. People get a third of their income taken away in taxes and the rest is used for saving and living expenses. If people are hesitant to part with their money you should realize that they work for that money. Just because they’re not giving half of their paycheck doesn’t mean that the donation came from the wrong place. Every little bit helps and you have to appreciate all of the donations in equal measure.
Don't Take 'No' For An Answer.
That may appear to contradict the previous statement but really it's all about cultivating a fundraising mentality along with a thick skin. If someone has a negative perception of your organization, cause, fundraising methods, or even of you personally (it can happen; don't upset yourself; it's not your fault) it is your job as a fundraiser to find out why this is the case and see if the matter can be remedied. The skill of fundraising consists in your ability to channel and not unnecessarily challenge perceptions.
Don’t Overwork Yourself
Lastly, you have to be careful, especially if you work for a small operation, not to wear yourself down. Don’t put undue stress or strain on your mental or physical health. You’ll be in a much better position to be a champion for a cause if you take results in stride. There will be lean years and there’ll be fat years. You just have to keep everything in perceptive and keep going.
If you are looking for a high value and easy fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

You need to contact a local egg producer to see if you can buy some egg cartons. That way you can sell dozens as well as combinations from a single egg and more. You need to arrange groups of volunteers to do the decorations and painting.
Make up a nice table display and feature your eggs. You can do a set sales price or ask for donations from the passer-bys. Yes, many families do their own eggs for Easter. Your target audiences is those who don’t have time to do their own, but still want to decorate or give eggs away to friends or grandchildren. With your eggs they just have to buy candy and fill them and they are ready gifts.
Make sure they understand what your group will do with the funds from the donations or sales from your Easter Eggstravaganza sale. If you want to save time and maybe a bit of messy clean-up then you may want to consider another idea for Springtime fundraisers.
If you are looking for something much easier try selling Sunset Coupon Books. They are ready to go and your group might just get started with no upfront cost.
Sunset Coupons will consign books to bonafide established organizations. Call to see how your group can begin raising money with no out of pocket expense.
Low sales price of $10 makes them easy to sell
A great variety of coupon offers makes it easy for your customer to see coupons they will use
The high value of each coupon assures that your fundraising customers will receive the purchase price right back in the form of savings at some of their favorite entertainment or restaurants spots.
If you are looking for a fast and easy way to build up local offline cash flow please take a look at the help you can get from Sunset Coupon Books. They offer 100% match of dollars to your organizations efforts. Give us a call and find out more. 800-627-6340

I Want To Do An Easy Fundraiser
Pulling off an easy and profitable fundraiser is possible with a bit of planning and proper execution. You can start by considering these three fundraising factors. How much time you have, how easy you want it to be and how much effort do you want to do or maybe more importantly how much effort you want to avoid.
Time
How much time do you want to put into a fundraiser? How much preparation time do you have? Do you want just two weeks from start to finish? A month?
Then, how long will the actual fundraiser last? One day? One weekend? A week?
Effort
As little as possible. That’s the goal, right? Yes, but you will need to put in some effort in order for this to be successful. Start by defining success. How much money do you want to raise? Do you think that goal is possible in the time you’ve allocated?
Then start to consider this next factor.

Springtime Fundraising
Spring may not have sprung where you live, but your event planning probably has. Wondering how you are going to pull it all together without falling apart? Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your resources and plan an event that puts fun back in fundraising.
Mobilize your donors and event participants to fundraise for you. Year after year the number of donations that are the result of a friend’s request has risen substantially resulting in many events exceeding their fundraising goals.
How about a star-studded twist on the standard auction fundraiser? The members of your group could compile a list of all the stars they want to contact and locate their mailing addresses on the internet. You would want to craft a friendly but professional letter to forward to their attention indicating your fundraising effort and what group it is for. You then want to ask if they will send you something they autograph. The item could range from pictures, clothing, books, tapes, CDs, sports items, etc. You may also want to consider contacting your "local stars" such as newscasters, tv personalities, weather forecasters and so on. Then have an auction for the donated, autographed items.
Or consider offering Sunset Coupon Books. Easily raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit.
Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days?
Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.
Coupon Books sell for only $10 each. You pay $5 for them so you make $5 for yourself for a full 100% profit.
Local coupon book editions are available in Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson and Salt Lake City.
If you are looking for a fast and easy way to build up local offline cash flow please take a look at the help you can get from Sunset Coupon Books. They offer 100% match of dollars to your organizations efforts. Give us a call and find out more. 800-627-6340

Top Philanthropic Donors: Paul Ichiro Terasaki
Paul Ichiro Terasaki, born September 10, 1929, is a noted scientist in the field of human organ transplant technology and Professor Emeritus of Surgery at UCLA School of Medicine.
Born in the Boyle Heights section of Los Angeles, Mr. Terasaki was 12 when his family, like many Japanese-Americans in the 1940s, was forced by the federal government to live in an internment camp during World War II. After the war ended, the family moved from the Gila River camp, in Arizona, to Chicago, but eventually returned to Southern California in 1948. Later he earned his doctorate in zoology at UCLA and was appointed to the medical school faculty.
In 1964, Terasaki developed the microcytotoxicity test, a tissue-typing test for organ transplant donors and recipients that required only 1 microliter each of antisera used to identify human leukocyte antigens (HLA). The test was adopted as the international standard for tissue typing. He has focused on study of the humoral theory of transplant rejection, which states that antibodies cause allograft rejection. He and his corporation, One Lambda, have played a central role in the development of tissue typing and transplantation surgery.
Terasaki established UCLA's HLA laboratory, and also established the UCLA Kidney Transplant Registry, the largest in the world. In 1999, he retired from UCLA, but within a year resumed his academic pursuits with the creation of the Terasaki Foundation, a research center dedicated to cancer immunotherapy and the study of humoral immunity and transplantation.
On May 13, 2010, UCLA announced the naming of the new life science building for Terasaki, who has given $50 million to the Division of Life Sciences in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, which is the largest ever given to the UCLA College. The structure is known as the Terasaki Life Sciences Building. He was awarded the 2011 UCLA Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year award on April 13, 2012 and the UCLA medal on June 15, 2012.
Paul Terasaki is married to artist Hisako Terasaki; they have four children.

Does St. Patrick’s Day Make A Good Fundraising Target?
Do you start to change the shade of green in your work wear as March 17th approaches?
Well, despite all of the festive clichés, St. Patrick's Day is, undoubtedly, a great day to host a fundraiser. Why? Well because half the work is already done for you, the theme is already set for you, the traditional games are decided!
Now all you have to do is provide a suitable event that will pay adequate tribute to the festive reputation of Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. But first, those on this side of the pond might want to know why the Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day to begin with.
According to legend, Saint Patrick is honored because he brought Christianity to Ireland. He is often pictured holding a shamrock, a symbol sacred to the Druids (the prime pagan religion of Ireland at the time). He used this symbol to explain the holy trinity using the three leaves, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the divine beings of the Christian religion.
So this is the story behind why, every March 17th, scores of folks don their green apparel and toast with green pints, a date that lends itself to the perfect charity event.
You won’t have to convince people to come out to a St. Patrick's Day shindig. You bet they are already planning a good time well before the date. But the key is to get your plans rolling early enough to entice lucky guests to your perfect event to honor your charity and St. Patrick.
Let’s start with some ideas for kids. These are perfect for school or youth group events.
Pop the Green Balloon for a Prize
Fill green balloons with lucky messages, but put a gift certificate in one lucky poppers balloon. Buyers can pay $1 for their chance to pop a balloon.
Grab the Four-leaf Clover
Who will be lucky enough to pick the four-leaf clover from the box of standard three-leaf varieties? Take the time to cut out a bunch of not-so-lucky shamrocks, but make sure to craft one lucky one with four. Buyers can pay $1 and try their luck at the draw.
Kiss the Blarney Stone
Set up a spot for people to kiss the stone and make a wish (for a donation of course). This game acts much like a wishing well.
Count the Lucky Clovers
Fill a jar with candy four-leaf clovers and put it on display in a prominent area in your school or youth group facility. Every chance to guess costs 50 cents or $1. The person who is closest wins a donated prize (gift certificates, a pizza lunch or a CD or DVD are great prize gifts).

Are There New Fundraisings Ideas?
Everyday we hear about another auction, event luncheon, or social event dinner. Many people have attended countless golf tournaments and house parties. Those of you that work with schools have probably had more than your fair share of chocolate bars and bake sale treats. How many pancake breakfasts have you done for your church?
Perhaps the question should be, Do you need a new idea to effectively raise funds for your fundraising group?
There are literally hundreds and hundreds of events and ways to raise funds for your organization. The most important thing to do is to pick one and then “Just Do It.”
In fact you may want to choose several different ideas and then do each one to see what works best for your group.
Ensuring that your event is fun, profitable, and not overly taxing on your group is no easy task. Always approach your events with the same methodology used for capital campaigns or strategic planning: with ample time, (and most importantly) realistic goals, and a clear sense of the desired outcome. Anyone who has planned an event knows they are like home renovations, they seem to cost twice as much and take twice as long as you expect.
Many small nonprofits fall into the trap of poor budgeting, investing time and money, only to break even or incur a loss at the end of an event. Keep to a budget that is realistic, detailed, and carefully managed. Budget control is one of the best tools in your toolbox.
Envision all aspects of your event, account for every component that has a cost associated with it, and think through how you're going to raise money and what's realistic. Identify items and services you need to get donated, but be very conservative with your in-kind donation estimates.
When considering the amount of income from an event try cutting your expectations in half and then look at that in comparison to your expenses and see what you would change if that were to happen.

Fundraising's Basic Donation Questions
Using the words you find most comfortable, present your appeal.
Person’s Name ... I would like you to consider a gift (or donation) of just $30 to our youth sports organization ___________. That will help those children whose parents can’t afford uniforms this year. The words, "I would like you to consider," are the ones you may find most appropriate.
Pause.
There you have asked for the donation. That wasn't so difficult after all.
Follow that simple example. Make the ask, and for a set amount. Don't fill in the silence. No matter how long it may seem, wait. The first one who speaks is at a disadvantage! So just pause ... for what seems eternity. They will respond with a yes or no.
If that answer is yes, then get the details of the donation. If the answer is a no …
No, I don't think so, or. I don't think I can give that much, not at this time.
Continue the conversation.
Well, then tell me, (person’s name), did I ask for too much? I need to know. I honestly felt that based on your identification with our program and your past support, $30 was just about the amount you'd want to give to a youth program this important. Am I correct? That's about the amount you would want to give, isn't it?
They respond: No, you are correct, that's just about the amount I'd like to give to a project like this.
And now, my final question.
Is it the timing, (name)? Is the timing off? You've indicated your enthusiasm and excitement for our youth team, and said the amount was what you'd want to give. Is the timing a problem?
You are right, they respond. And then they go on to explain how it would be impossible to make a gift, even a small one, at this time. They are committed to a few other projects that there simply aren't funds available.
Find out when would be a good time to reconnect with the potential donor and make sure you do.
