Top Philanthropic Donors: Lee and Jane Seidman

Mr. Seidman is the retired founder of the Motorcars Group, a chain of automobile dealerships, in Cleveland.

Mr. Seidman, 79, and his wife, Jane, 70, pledged $42-million to University Hospitals, in Cleveland, for its cancer center, which the organization has named the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center.

The Seidmans’ connection to University Hospitals goes back to their infancies; they were both born there.

The gift also continues a change in their philosophy of giving that they made several years ago. In previous years, said Mr. Seidman, the couple rarely declined requests for charitable donations, making small gifts to many types of charities.

But after Mr. Seidman retired in 2000, the couple started devoting more time to their philanthropy. In 2005 they began taking courses through the Wealth and Giving Forum, a New York group, which advises wealthy philanthropists, and over time they came to believe they could make a greater difference if they concentrated their giving in larger amounts and in one or two geographic areas or on one or two nonprofits.

To that end, they chose to focus the bulk of their giving in Cleveland, where they grew up, and designated University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic as the beneficiaries of the bulk of their philanthropy. They pledged $17-million to the Cleveland Clinic in 2007 and another $6-million in 2009.

Mr. and Mrs. Seidman paid $12-million toward their pledge in 2010. The couple did not place any restrictions on the gift as long as it is directed toward the cancer center.

Back To School Has A Different Meaning To Fundraisers

This is the time that the words “Back To School” begin to be heard on TV and Radio and show up in printed ads all over the place.

These ads are try to sell everything from school supplies, clothing and snacks to hi-tech communications.  With this noise it is very easy to miss the fact that schools are still struggling with funding for all sorts of basic needs.

So funds for extracurricular activities are the first items to be cut.  They must be supported by fees that are paid by parents as well as separate fundraising efforts.  These can be used to cover the expenses that may include travel and awards.

Today many major corporations have different programs that allow small donations to schools based on purchases of specific products that are absorbed into the general fund and not used for the smaller extracurricular activities needs.

But there are people who think that the corporations are supporting these smaller programs and think that regular donations and purchases are no longer need.

Fundraising Road Bumps

We all know that you can’t please everyone.  So… don’t expect to.  This year many students will be asked by a school organization to go out into the world and raise funds for the very first time.

This can happen at any level of “school.”  From pre-school and day care through elementary, middle school, high school and beyond.

We are given very good reasons for these fundraising efforts.  The most basic is that with out the fundraising the “group” won’t have all the funds they need to operate.  Most groups also have fees that the parents must pay for their student to join the group.

It is true that many groups need to have a stream of funds that goes well beyond the fees students pay to join.  The funds may be needed for basic necessities or other needs like travel expenses.

No matter the need the focus here is that you must expect that many folks that are approached will have many different reasons that will lead them to have a resounding no as their answer.  This can stem from their lack of funds or the feeling that everyone has their hand out and they have to say no to someone.  They may have had a bad experience in the past and don’t trust many people going forward.

While there are many ways to raise funds, it is better if you can delivery a quality product “right now” to the potential buyer or donor.  Keep in mind that even with a “right now” product not everyone likes pop-corn, chocolate or calendars.

At Sunset Coupons we find that a “free Lunch” is still a very good incentive.  Please consider for your group local coupons that serve all parts of the transaction.

Your group benefits with matching funds from the sale.  Your buyer gets a value of $400.00 plus for just $10.  The local merchant benefits by introducing a new customer to their business. A real win, win, win!

Give us a call at Sunset Coupons ( 800-627-6340 ) so we can help your group raise your much needed funds.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Thomas Boone Pickens, Jr.

Thomas Boone Pickens, Jr. was born May 22, 1928, known as T. Boone Pickens, is an American business magnate and financier. Pickens chairs the hedge fund BP Capital Management. He was a well-known takeover operator and corporate raider during the 1980s. With an estimated current net worth of about $1.4 billion, he is ranked by Forbes as the 328th-richest person in America and ranked 879th in the world.

Pickens was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, the son of Grace and Thomas Boone Pickens. His father worked as an oil and mineral landman (rights leaser). During World War II, his mother ran the local Office of Price Administration, rationing gasoline and other goods in three counties.  Pickens was the first child born via Caesarean section in the history of Holdenville hospital.

At age 12, Pickens delivered newspapers. He quickly expanded his paper route from 28 papers to 156. Pickens later cited his boyhood job as an early introduction to "expanding quickly by acquisition," a business practice he favored later in life.

When the oil boom in Oklahoma ended in the late 1930s, Pickens' family moved to Amarillo, Texas. Pickens never served in the military but instead attended Texas A&M on a basketball scholarship, but he lost the scholarship and transferred to Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University), where he majored in Geology. He is a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M with a degree in geology in 1951. Following his graduation, Pickens was employed by Phillips Petroleum. He worked for Phillips until 1954.  In 1956, following his period as a wildcatter, he founded the company that would later become Mesa Petroleum.

Mr. Pickens, now 82, pledged $100-million to Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater, to endow scholarships that will be awarded based on academic merit and to provide financial aid for students who otherwise could not afford to attend. The institution will receive the money upon Mr. Pickens’s death.

A 1951 graduate of the university, Mr. Pickens has made numerous other donations to Oklahoma State. Counting this pledge, he has committed close to $500-million to the institution over his lifetime.

In addition to his pledge to Oklahoma State in 2010, Mr. Pickens gave a total of $1,046,512 to 30 human-service, medical, public-affairs, and other groups throughout the country.

Five Fast Fundraising Tips.

Grassroots
Contact your list of regular contributors and explain your need for needed funds. Email, faxes and phone calls are the fastest ways to contact them. Leave all the information necessary for them to make a donation. Remember to say "thank you" in advance.

Walkathons
Put together a walkathon. Reserve a venue at a local park or school track. Check with local authorities regarding any reservation or regulation issues. Advertise your walkathon using fliers, press releases to the media and social media. Make up and pass out sign-up sheets as well as sheets for the donations from sponsors. Get everyone in the organization to walk and find others to sponsor them.

Have volunteers help with decorating the venue, check-in, giving out information about the organization and any sales items. Ask local businesses to donate cold drinks, water and ice to serve or sell.

Bake Sales
Check with local authorities to obtain all necessary permits such as food-handling licenses and certifications. Locate a venue to hold your bake sale at a church or school. Advertise the fundraiser. If possible have the baked goods donated by local businesses, and get homemade items (if allowed in your area) from members of the organization or other contributors. Set competitive prices for the baked goods.  Provide recipes for the baked goods as part of the event.

Rummage Sales
Get donated items for your rummage sale.  Arrange for volunteers to help with the sale. Advertise your rummage sale. Price the items for a quick sale. Set up your rummage sale in an organized manner.

Karaoke Night
Reserve a venue and a karaoke machine. Set your prices, offering "deals" to those who want to sing several songs. Advertise your karaoke night. Enlist volunteers to help with decorations, check-in, song selection and to DJ the event. Remember to have at least two extra people willing to sing, in case there are lulls during the event.

You can contact Sunset Coupons to learn how both your organization and your donors can benefit from Sunset Coupon Books as your next fundraiser.
