Philanthropic Donors Irwin and Joan Jacobs

Irwin Mark Jacobs was born October 18, 1933 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was the co-founder and former chairman of Qualcomm, and chair of the board of trustees of the Salk Institute. In 2010, Jacobs was listed as number 828 on Forbes's annual list of the World's Top Billionaires.  He earned his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1956, and his S.M. and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957 and 1959, respectively. Additionally, he is a brother of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity.

He and his wife, Joan reside in California, and have four sons. His outside interests include the arts, reading, jogging, and family outings.

Their son Paul E. Jacobs is CEO of Qualcomm. Jeff Jacobs is the Chief Marketing Officer of Qualcomm. Hal Jacobs the second oldest, played on the 1985 USA Maccabi volleyball team, and is a Co-Producer of the hit musical Jersey Boys. Their eldest son Gary Jacobs is the head of the board of the Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High Charter School. Jacobs's grandson, Adam Jacobs, is a former catcher of the Cornell University baseball team.

As the co-founder and chairman of Qualcomm, Jacobs has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the field of education through generous donations and grants to several schools and organizations. His donations have gone mostly towards fellowships and scholarships for deserving students in the fields of engineering and computer science, as well as the arts, and are focused in the San Diego area. The San Diego Union Tribune in 2011 dubbed him the "Philanthropist in Chief".

Jacobs has pledged $120 million for the San Diego Symphony, a similar amount for the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego, $75 million for UCSD's future specialty hospital and $20 million to replace the central library in downtown San Diego. Also in 2005 the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse was named after Jacobs and his wife in honor of their philanthropic contributions towards the institution's development.

In August 2010, Irwin and Joan Jacobs joined the Giving Pledge, pledging to give away most of their fortune to philanthropy. The Giving Pledge consists of around 40 America billionaires who have agreed to pledge 50 percent or more of their wealth to philanthropic causes. As of 2010, 50 percent of Jacob's wealth would equal $600 million. As part of the pledge, the Jacobses will choose which charities they would like to donate at least 50 percent of their estate to.

Control of how money is raised was addressed in the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, also known as "McCain-Feingold", after its sponsors, is the most recent major federal law on campaign finance, which revised some of the legal limits on expenditures set in 1974, and prohibited unregulated contributions to national political parties. ‘Soft money’ also refers to funds spent by independent organizations that do not specifically advocate the election or defeat of candidates, and funds which are not contributed directly to candidate campaigns.

Much of that money has gone in to media buys to get their respective messages across.  Smaller amounts have gone into the purchase of printed materials and the rent of offices and to pay for travel expenses.

While it is much harder to find out what economic effect all of the congressional races and on down through all of the state and local offices that were campaigned for.  Countless millions were spent to fund these elections.

The money has gone back into the national and local economies.  So it is not as though the money has just vanished.  It should for some individuals and business been a boon to their income levels.

After creating shareholder wealth by providing vital home building and retirement savings services through the two Fortune 500 companies he created, KB Home and SunAmerica, Inc., Eli Broad and Edythe, his wife of 54 years, are now devoting their time, energy and resources to philanthropy.  

As the child of immigrant parents, Eli Broad was instilled with the values of hard work, education and the dream that anything was possible. He and Edythe both attended Detroit Public Schools, and then he attended Michigan State University, graduating with a degree in accounting and becoming the youngest CPA in the state’s history. 

While working for two years as an accountant, Eli Broad saw his homebuilding clients making much more than he was, and he and Edythe’s cousin’s husband decided they, too, could build houses. Eli Broad and Donald Kaufman founded Kaufman and Broad with the simple idea that if they built houses without basements (the widespread use of gas heating rendered basements to store coal unnecessary), they could offer homes with mortgage payments that were lower than the rent for a two-bedroom apartment. The first weekend in 1956, they priced their houses at $13,740. They sold out that same weekend and were in business.

The Broads had created a family foundation in the 1960s as a way to support their charitable interests and causes. But with their financial success from the sale of SunAmerica, the Broads focused their charitable giving in a new style of investing that was more akin to their business acumen: venture philanthropy. An entrepreneur at heart, Eli Broad has applied his same spirit of creating new enterprises to the family’s approach to philanthropy.

Today, The Broad Foundations, which include The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and The Broad Art Foundation, have assets of $2.1 billion. Their mission is to advance entrepreneurship for the public good in education, science and the arts.

In 2010, Broad backed "The Giving Pledge," an initiative started by fellow billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates for rich Americans to give at least half of their wealth to charity. Eli and Edythe Broad committed to give 75 percent of their wealth to philanthropy during or after their lifetimes.
