School Fundraisers: How to Avoid Fundraising Fatigue
In many communities, school fundraisers are necessary to supplement budget shortfalls and support a wide array of school programs. Fundraisers make impossible or marginalized programs possible. But in some cases, the volume of fundraising is starting to take its toll on the students who are selling, the PTA and teachers who are organizing, and the parents and family members who are buying. Fundraising fatigue is a common occurrence in school communities today.
Below are some tips on how to avoid fundraising fatigue:
Limit the number of fundraisers. Many schools that do not regulate their fundraising activity run into the problem of over-fundraising. Too many groups selling to the same audience and tapping into the same volunteer pool. This drains school resources and is counter-productive. Schools should have only one school-wide fundraiser each semester. The principal should implement a strict approval process by which he or she decides what fundraisers are allowed.
Set firm goals and deadlines. Fundraisers are effective only if they have firm financial goals and designated start and end dates. Enthusiastic participants and supporters are key ingredients to successful fundraisers. If you have never-ending fundraisers, you will lose the initial enthusiasm and burnout will occur. As with most things in life, there must be a sense of closure. Fundraisers are no different.
Avoid competing with neighboring schools. Fundraising is hard enough and the last thing you want is to sell the same products as the school down the street. Always know what other communities are doing for their fundraisers and make sure your fundraiser is unique.
Rotate volunteers. Parents and teachers should not be responsible for more than one fundraiser a year. Their time is too valuable to get caught up in organizing multiple fundraisers. Line up a healthy reserve of volunteers at the beginning of the school year and rotate their fundraising volunteer activities.
Most importantly, never lose sight of the school's purpose. Students are there to learn, teachers are there to teach, and parents are there to support the overall education process. Fundraising should never detract from these core principles.

Common Fundraising Mistakes and Tips to Avoid Them
Sometimes in life things just don’t go the way you planned. This is especially true with fundraisers. The logistics of organizing a fundraiser can be overwhelming to most. Coupled with the fact that most fundraising organizers are volunteers, so they are taking on the fundraising responsibilities on top of their everyday life routine. And most have little prior experience with fundraisers so they are learning on the fly. Below are some common pitfalls that fundraising organizers encounter.
Lack of Planning. Planning for the fundraiser needs to start well in advanced. From selecting the fundraiser, to coordinating the logistics, to lining up volunteers, to executing the fundraiser, the details are numerous. A fundraising check list or outline will help your cause. Make a list of every task that needs to get done and assign volunteers in your group for each task. You must delegate! Do not take on everything by yourself. You will eventually burnout and the fundraiser will suffer. Make a plan and stick with it.
No support. We’ve seen this occur many times. Well intentioned groups, such as the PTA, will plan a fundraiser, but the school community (principals, teachers, administrators, etc.) doesn’t share the same enthusiasm. For a fundraiser to be successful, you must have the support of your community. Get leaders on board early and develop a plan together. There’s always a bit of politics involved, but you’ll see the results if you get the support from the entire community.
Poor Communication. Lack of communication within your group as well as outside your group will always cause issues. You must be on the same page with your group and everyone must be aware of the fundraising game plan. Weekly email updates and an active Facebook page can help your cause. Be vocal at your group meeting and events to make sure everyone is aware of the plan. Also, make sure you are aware of the other fundraisers going on in your community so there are no conflicts.
Little to no promotion. This goes without saying, but you must successfully promote your fundraiser. Some groups think fundraisers will run themselves and the community support will be automatic. That assumption has been the downfall of many fundraisers. This is not the case for most groups. Make sure you get the word out! Parent letters, posters, emails, social networking, and information tables at events and so on.

Fundraising Publicity: Tips in getting media coverage
So you fundraiser is up and running. Now what? Now it’s time to promote, promote, promote! You need to do what you can to get the word out to your community about your fundraiser. It’s great to promote your fundraiser throughout the school or group, but you also must think bigger. You should develop a plan to promote your fundraiser to your entire community, and even surrounding communities. If your cause is worthwhile, people will want to support it. The most effective way to reach a wider audience is through your local media. Below are some tips on how to utilize the media in helping promote your fundraiser.
Write a press release about your fundraiser. The local media wants to know what’s going on in their area. Sometimes they would be willing to do feature stories on fundraising, other times they will just list announcements. Either way, get your fundraiser mentioned in the press. A press release is a good way to announce your fundraiser to the media.
Develop a media pitch for your fundraiser. What is the reason your group is doing a fundraiser? Why should the community support your cause? These are the questions the press will have for you. You will need to create a media pitch that clearly states the mission statement of your group’s fundraiser and be able to communicate your message clearly.
Identify the local newspapers and the reporters who cover the education or social beat. Your groups should appoint a media liaison position. This person will be responsible for developing a media list and make contact with the appropriate contacts. Some areas have one newspaper, others have multiple options. Most newspapers have reporter assigned to cover the education beat or social events. Identify the right contacts and remain in contact with them throughout the year.
Think beyond newspapers. It may be a long shot, but contact the local TV and radio stations in your area. You never know what may peak the media’s interest. We’ve worked with many schools who got local TV or radio coverage for their fundraisers. Also, many newspapers, TV and radio work with local bloggers. Try to identify and contact these bloggers as well. Many of them cover local stories and may have an interest in writing about your fundraiser. The worst they can do is say no.

Jon Huntsman Sr., Utah Philanthropist
Utah industrialist Jon Huntsman Sr., who has donated more than $1.2 billion over the years, is featured in Forbes magazine as one of 19 out of 1,000 of the world's billionaires who have given more than a billion dollars to worthy causes.
His giving began long before Microsoft's Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffet earlier this year pledged to give away at least half of their multibillion-dollar fortunes.
Huntsman, founder of global chemical manufacturer and marketer Huntsman Corp., then took that announcement a step further, according to Forbes.
"His take was that his peers need to step up," the article, published on Monday, said. It quoted Huntsman: " It becomes a game to see how much you can accumulate. They [captains of industry] never have the joy of seeing the thankful tears of a cancer patient or seeing a kid go to college."
Huntsman's major giving goes back as far as 1992, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. En route to the hospital, he left a $1 million check at a homeless shelter. Another $1 million check went to a soup kitchen, followed by $500,000 to the clinic that found the malignancy.
Ultimately he created a cancer foundation, pouring in more than $1 billion. The Huntsman Cancer Institute, based at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, grew out of that.
Forbes writes that his donations last year "knocked him off the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest individuals — his net worth listed in Monday's article was less than $1 billion, at $900 million - "but a run-up in his company stock should put his net worth near $1 billion again this year."
"He says he plans to give it all away before he dies," the article said.
Huntsman's philosophy, according to Forbes: "The time to give away money is when you make it. "
In 2001, Huntsman was presented the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2003, he received the Humanitarian of the Year Award. In November 2008, the American Cancer Society presented him its Medal of Honor for Cancer Philanthropy.
Other notable causes include: Sigma Chi; his support of The Wharton School, in recognition of which one of the school's signature buildings, Huntsman Hall, was named in his honor and he serves as Chairman of the Wharton Board of Overseers; the University of Utah, which named its special events arena after him; a new law library at Brigham Young University, which at his request was named after Howard W. Hunter; notable family philanthropy in earthquake ravaged Armenia and a new library at Southern Utah University, which he also requested be named after someone else (retiring SUU President Gerald R. Sherratt).
Huntsman authored and published the book Winners Never Cheat: Everyday Values We Learned as Children (But May Have Forgotten) in 2005, published by Wharton School Publishing. In the book, Huntsman conveys moral lessons drawn from his life experience. The second edition, titled Winners Never Cheat: Even in Difficult Times, made the Wall Street Journal's best-sellers list.

Fundraising in Salt Lake City Utah with Sunset Coupons
What fundraising groups in Salt Lake City could benefit from using Sunset Coupons Books?
All the local youth team sports like baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, fencing, hockey, basketball and bowling are out there needing to raise funds to buy equipment, uniforms and pay the fees to their sponsoring bodies. They are out there competing to raise money along with all of the other great causes.
Churches need to raise funds to support their ministries, the church building itself, their educational programs, they need to support the community work they do like “meals and companionship for shut-ins and the elderly. They may have children’s educational programs and youth sports that serve the community and congregation.
Now if we move on the local schools you all know that everything from music, to all the different sports programs, to art, the library, classroom needs and school trips are supported by fundraisings these days.
Did you know that even colleges and university groups need to fundraise? While many times the alumni help support college groups those funds can fall far short of the real dollars needed. Big name schools have no trouble funding high profile sports and those teams needs, there are many groups on campus that turn to fundraising projects to make sure they can reach the budget goal. If you have been part of a theater group, camera club, newspaper, science club (too many to name them all) then you know the needs they have for fresh sources of revenue.
Let Sunset Coupon Books show you a way to meet your needs. No spoilage, not even a start up cost in many cases. What has proven to be a easy sell based on the great benefit to small cost factor. Your group, 100% matching funds with us as your partner. Share and share alike we always say.

Hot Weather Fundraising Promotions
Well the mercury just went past 113° F on my thermometer. That is hot even when it is a dry heat.
When we get to this time of year you want to tie fundraising to fun and cool (or think wet) promotions.
That idea leads to dunk tanks as a way to raise funds for your group.
You want to find a high-traffic location (the one pictured was at a local Wal-Mart) and one that will be able to supply the water. You can rent the dunk tank from a vendor. Male sure you have a good sign telling what the fundraiser is for. You want to offer the folks at the location a reason to come over and try to dunk the person. If you can have a person the people would like to dunk all the better.
You need to be very loud and vocal to get people to come to your location. Make it a challenge or “Free” with a donation. You will get at least a dollar to have them try. You want them to have fun so you can move younger or older pitchers closer to the tank.
It works real well to combine a fun event like a dunk tank with the sale of Sunset Coupon Books while they are waiting for their turn.
If you want to find out more about Sunset Coupons give us a call (800-627-6340) for the information on a great offer for your donors. The perfect fundraiser for the Valley of the Sun. (the Phoenix AZ Metro area) We also have a program in Salt Lake City, UT.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Margaret Anne Cargill
Margaret Anne Cargill (September 24, 1920 - August 1, 2006) was an American philanthropist and heiress to part of the Cargill fortune. She gave away more than $200 million anonymously.
Cargill was born 24 September 1920, in Los Angeles, the granddaughter of W. W. Cargill, and grew up in the Midwest. She earned a degree in arts education from the University of Minnesota and moved to Southern California. She died from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on 1 August 2006 at her home in La Jolla, San Diego, California.
Philanthropy
Cargill was one of eight heirs to the Minneapolis-based grain-trading conglomerate Cargill, Forbes Magazine listed her in 2005 as the 164th richest American, with a net worth of $1.8 billion. She was a major donor to the American Red Cross, the Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian and the American Swedish Institute.
She gave away more than $200 million, most of it in the period between 1990 and her death in 2006, and always anonymously.
She established the Anne Ray Charitable Trust which provides grants for charitable and educational programs and scholarships.
She provided that, after her death, the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation would use her wealth for charitable purposes. In 2011 her assets were finally liquidated, forming a $6 billion dollar donation to the Anne Ray Charitable Trust and Margaret A Cargill Foundation.

Planning the Perfect Fundraiser
There’s a reason the Girl Scouts sell their famous cookies year after year, it works! People love them, which makes it a perfect fundraising vehicle. Following are tips for planning a perfect yearly fundraiser.
Select Your Supplier or Vendor
Not all suppliers are created equal, so choose a supplier that best fits your organization. Some suppliers offer fundraiser items to support your sales, while others don’t offer that. Some may have a variety of flavors or even have banners for their fundraiser packages.
Location, Location, Location
Although your organization members can sell door-to-door for your fundraiser, sometimes a booth sale works even better. Choose a location with a lot of traffic. In addition, be sure to have a sign to let people know which organization they’re supporting by buying your item(s). Possible locations include the outside of large discount retailers or at local festivals.
If Possible Offer Samples
Sampling is a tried-and-true method of sales, especially when it comes to a tasty product! Have small samples for people to try. Make sure to greet each passerby and offer them a free sample. Once they taste how good your product is, they will want to buy some. Please check with local laws to make sure this is OK to do.
Give Incentives
Although many of your members will sell items to help the group, you can motivate them further by offering incentives. Incentives can include small prizes for reaching certain levels or make it competitive by offering a larger prize for the top seller. Talk to local merchants to see if they could donate gift cards or items to reward your top sellers.

Dress For Fundraising Success
You will find that your appearance means a lot when it comes to the real world. In fact, the way that you dress may mean the difference between fundraising success and failure. You will want to keep in mind that if they think that you are a dressed like you do not care, the real world will think that you do not care about your group’s fundraising success and the donor will think that you do not see them as a potential donor. The key word is "try." You need to try to impress the world and the donors because that means that you are thinking about them. You will find that there are many people who think that your creditability is based on the way that you can dress for success. You will find that there are a lot of assumptions that people can make just by looking at the way that you dress. You do not want to be underdressed; however, you do not want to be overdressed. The only thing is that it is not better to be overdressed for the occasion. They both can harm your potential of be a successful fundraiser.
The first thing that you will want to think about when it comes to dressing for getting donations is where you will be meeting. If it is in the office, the proper office attire is necessary. If you are meeting for drinks, you will want to make sure that you are dressed appropriately (at least casual dressy).
You will find that if you are not dressed appropriately, you will be affected because your confidence is shot. You will need to overcome your self-esteem issues before you make your sales pitch, and it can just be difficult to make the right impression. Regardless of your expertise or knowledge, it is really the clothes that will boost your confidence.
There are some rules when it comes to apparel and the way that you appear. You will want to make sure that your clothing are not damaged, showing that they are old or stained. You will want to make sure that either casual, casual appropriately dresses you dressy, or dressy. In general, you need to look well kept and that means that you need to take a shower, comb your hair, and lay off the strong fragrances. You do not want them to be distracted by your scent; rather it is a good one or a bad one. Too much cologne or perfume can send someone into an allergy attack and you do not want that to happen.
You need to make sure that you look professional and that you think highly about yourself. You will also want to be clean cut when it comes to having facial hair.
You really should not display any tattoos or piecing that could distract them. You need to look like you know a lot about the products and company, not that you can highjack a car. Also, make sure that your clothing is neatly pressed as well. You will want to make sure that your clothes wear you well. Meaning, they need to be perfectly fit (not too tight or too loose). Keep in mind the way that your clothing acts when you sit down or stand up.
Also, keep in mind that less is more when it comes to the business world. You can have a few items of jewelry; however, you do not want it to overpower you. You will also want to think about the clothing and the message that it will give up. You need to convey a professional and wise person, not someone who is completely lost and thrown together.

Always be Vigilant – ongoing, concerted effort to have relationship building be a priority for the organization and leadership. Share meeting notes and thoughts on next steps for stewardship and follow up.
Always be Extroverted – every week reach out with at least one phone call to a donor or write a personal note card. Know that every ‘ask’ and meeting is ‘high theatre’ - dress the role and act accordingly to the audience and setting.
Always be Organized – set up goals for number of meetings, phone conversations, asks per month and have ongoing meetings to review accelerators and inhibitors to success.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Chris and Jamie Cooper-Hohn
The Children's Investment Fund Foundation
The Children's Investment Fund Foundation UK is a large charitable organization in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 2002 by hedge fund manager Chris Hohn and his wife Jamie Cooper-Hohn. It is a registered charity in England & Wales and in 2006–7 had a gross income of £324 million, making it one of the 30 largest charities in the UK.
It receives its funding as an annual donation representing 1/2 of 1% of assets from TCI FM (The Children's Investment Fund Management) which manages the London‐based hedge fund The Children's Investment Fund founded by Chris Hohn in 2003. His wife manages the charitable organization.
As the manager of one of Britain's largest activist hedge funds, Chris Cooper-Hahn has earned the label "ruthless." The children of India and Sub-Saharan Africa sure wouldn't know it. Chris sends a good chunk of the fund's profits and fees to a foundation run by his wife Jamie, swelling it to $2.5 billion in assets. The foundation then uses leverage of another kind, aiming, for instance, to save kids by saving their mothers. Helpful Friends: Foundation piggybacks on work of Bill Clinton, Elton John and others.
Best Advice: "You have to be able to define what success looks like," Jamie says.
If your fundraising goals are a bit more down to earth give Sunset Coupons a call and see what we can do for your group.

What Kind of Groups Use Sunset Coupons?
This will be a long list but we bet you can think of even more.
Lets start with Churches. They need to raise funds to support their ministries, the church building itself, their educational programs, they need to support the community work they do like “meals and companionship for shut-ins and the elderly. They may have children’s educational programs and youth sports that serve the community and congregation.
No if we move on the local schools you all know that everything from music, to all the different sports programs, to art, the library, classroom needs and school trips are supported by fundraisings these days.
All the local youth team sports like baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, fencing, hockey, basketball and bowling are out there needing to raise funds to buy equipment, uniforms and pay the fees to their sponsoring bodies. They are out there competing to raise money along with all of the other great causes.
Let Sunset Coupon Books show you a way to meet your needs. No spoilage, not even a start up cost in some cases. What has proven to be a easy sell based on the great benefit to small cost factor. Your group, 100% matching funds with us as your partner. Share and share alike we always say.

How to Organize a Fundraiser
To organize a successful fundraiser, you need to consider the demographics of the target group, that is, who they are, what they enjoy, and how you can appeal to them. Based on this information, and a review of your groups resources, you will need to form a plan and follow it to succeed.
Choose your target group. Depending on the group that you are organizing for, this may be children in school, the parents of school children, local businesses, or the general public. You may want to sell candy or donuts to the children, but advertising or services to businesses. By picking the best possible "product" for your fundraising effort, you will increase your chance to succeed.
Think about cost. If you decide to make it a public fundraising event, think about cost, sponsorship, and participation. An example would be a car wash, which is a very common fundraiser for youth groups and clubs. Cost would include soap, washcloths, and use of a facility to hold the event. Sponsorship could come in the form of a local retailer who is willing to let you use their premises and water for the event, and possibly help with advertising. Participation is getting the members of your club or group to be at the location, willing to work, as well as having them help spread the word prior to the event.
Pick a suitable time and date. Car washes, cookouts, and yard sales are more profitable and enjoyable in good weather, so they may not be suitable for mid winter or the middle of summer in very hot locations. Attendance will be higher on Saturdays, but look at the community calendar to be sure no other event is planned for the day you choose that will have people busy doing other things while you are holding your fundraiser.
Find a good location. Many retail businesses allow different groups to use their premises for car washes, bake sales, and other fundraising activities if they are compatible with their values and they support what you are working for.
Advertise. This can mean placing signs around town and at community bulletin boards, word of mouth, or talking to broadcast media to see what type of advertising they offer. Many radio stations and local television outlets have community bulletin boards and public service announcements for non profit groups.
Get your supplies together and plan what you will need to pull your event off successfully.
There are lots of tried and true fundraising events, from coupon book sales, chili cook-offs, car washes, and bake sales, to community garage sales and raffles. Look at the resources you or your group have, and use them to the best of your ability. If you have a lot of potential labor, but little money, you may want to organize a cleanup team to do lawn work or house cleaning for contributions.
Look at other groups who have held fundraisers in your community, and see which type are most successful.
Talk to local businesses and see if they are willing to donate facilities or products to help you with your efforts.
Use team work and organization, and plan the event from start to finish.
Form a committee to make sure all the planning and gathering of materials is accomplished.
Make sure you are not breaking local laws with your efforts.
If your efforts involve door to door sales, travel in teams for safety.
Bake sales and cookouts should be managed so that the food is safe and handled properly.

Always Agree With Your Customer
When you are fundraising you are selling. You will find that agreeing with your customers will give you the best results.
If you are asked why you do things a certain way try this thought process.
“There’s a good reason we do this, and it actually benefits YOU.” This is a response to a request the prospect has that flies in the face of your group’s policy. Too many times, fundraisers have responded with “I’m sorry, that’s our charities’ policy.” This often leaves the potential customer feeling the policy is unwieldy, rigid, and unfriendly. Again, the example is going to be about discounting, because many times, that’s where the “company policy” verbiage is invoked.
Try this instead: “Actually, the fact that we do our fundraising benefits you and those we serve. We plug much of our revenue right back into support rather than new fundraising so that your investment in our solution continues to have value year after year. The roadmap of technology is littered with fundraisers that couldn’t maintain profitability and went out of business, and their solutions were no longer supported. That’s not our business model, and we want to be there year after year for you.”
“I can understand why you feel that way.” Take the approach that the prospect’s always smart and perhaps a little skeptical, so if you like or agree that the prospect may have a point, and try to understand the situation from his or her perspective. So after opening my response with “I can understand why you feel that way,” I agree that if I were armed with the same information, I’d probably feel the same way, too.
