You would never do that! It would be very short-sighted to have limits on your fundraiser’s appeal. No one doing fundraising would do that. But, are you sure you aren’t letting that happen right now?
When your group or charity is raising funds it breaks down to the individuals that are actually doing the day-to-day work. If you can, observe them going about the actual work. Unless they are very well trained you will find that they will tend to fall into patterns of appeals.
They will work with those they are comfortable with; friends, family and co-workers. Those groups tend to fall into a similar age group as well.
While each individual may tend to be better with certain groups and be very successful with their group you don’t want to have those limits overall. So as you build your working group make sure they have divers backgrounds. That makes sure that your appeals aren’t blocked from or by different age ranges, ethnicities, economic strata or religious groups. Your appeals need to reach all demographics.
So if you are selling directly to consumers or sending emails asking for donations you don’t want arbitrary limits to crop-up when making those appeals.
When an inexperienced persons is making an appeal the first “no” they get, may set a pattern of avoidance to the persons or their stereotypes that matches that “first no.” This avoidance phenomenon is easy to observe and very hard to correct if it is allowed to set-in.
