Top Philanthropic Donors: Lin Arison
Mrs. Arison who is an author and film producer, is the widow of Ted Arison, the founder of Carnival Cruise Lines. Mr. Arison died in 1999.
A resident of Miami and Israel, she is working on her fourth book. Arison also holds the title of executive producer for an HBO miniseries and Oscar-winning documentary short film.
Mrs. Arison gave $39 million to the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, a Miami organization she and her late husband founded to identify young, emerging artists and help them at critical points in their careers.
Founded 31 years ago as the National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts, the organization announced earlier this week that it was buying the Bacardi property to use as its national headquarters
The $10 million to buy the site came from the organization’s endowment, which Arison boosted in 2010 after selling two pieces of art — a Claude Monet waterlily painting and a portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, Jeanne Hebuterne Wearing a Hat — for $39 million at auction. She sold them anonymously, but The New York Times identified her as the seller.
She currently serves on its board. Mrs. Arison has designated that the money be used to establish an endowment for the foundation’s YoungArts program. Earnings from the endowment will go toward new arts-education programs for high-school students and teachers.
Mrs. Arison said she was concerned that schools were cutting their arts programs. “Unfortunately, when they’re tightening budgets, they see the arts as frivolous,” she said. “We have to put arts back into the school system.”
Mrs. Arison is the author of Travels With Van Gogh and the Impressionists: Discovering the Connections, a personal memoir and travelogue in which she also explored the history of the impressionists.
Mrs. Arison has been named the winner of a prestigious national arts award for her work in arts education. Americans for the Arts will present the 2012 National Arts Awards to Arison and fellow honorees in New York on Oct. 15. The awards were announced on Monday December 24th.
