Giving Back Improves Giving

Most fundraising groups think that the only thing they need to do to raise money is ask real nice.  In today’s Social Media climate nothing could be further from the truth.  Another aspect of this is the question often silently asked, What have you done for me?”

What does your group do for your community?  That question is often ignored or minimized by the group itself.  The more often a group is introduced or in front of the general public (of course in a positive way) the more likely a fundraising request is honored.

Anytime of year Fundraising groups should consider giving back to their communities.  I know that your group needs to raise funds to keep up with their commitments for your group’s needs.  But consider your group’s community image.  If you are also seen giving back could it not improve the results during your next fundraising effort.

We tend to think about the needy in our communities.  You could do a clothing drive, or a canned food drive and then make a donation to a local charity that caters to families in need.  Do a publicity release to the local media.  Give them the opportunity to do publicity for you and your group.

A toy drive always is an appreciated service during the Christmas season.  You could work with an established group like Toys-For-Tots and the United States Marine Corps. Or you could work with a local food bank (they always now about community needs).  Many times local churches have an outreach program that you could tie your benefit to.

A community clean-up program is a good project to help others during the spring.  Elderly and those with physical challenges are groups your group to help.

Always take the time to document both the collection and donation parts of your project in photos.  You can use them later to be part of your group’s scrapbook or as part of your display at your next fundraiser.

Consider that your group could simply volunteer time to many of the organizations that are already providing services to those in need.  Make it a group effort from your group to your community.  This is a great no cost effort that can still have all the other recognition and benefits for your group.

These group efforts can also lead to other benefits for your group in the coming months when you need to raise funds.  Your networking can really pay off in the long run.
