Top Philanthropic Donors: Michael R. Bloomberg Update

As of January 2013 Michael Rubens Bloomberg total giving to Johns Hopkins exceeded 1.1 Billon Dollars.  His gratitude toward the university, starting with a $5 donation the year after he graduated, has since taken on a supersize, Bloombergian scale.  On Sunday, as he makes a $350 million gift to his alma mater — by far the largest in its history — the New York City mayor, along with the president of the university, will disclose the staggering sum of his donations to Johns Hopkins over the past four decades: $1.1 billion.

Michael Rubens Bloomberg was born February 14, 1942 and is an American businessman and politician who is currently Mayor of New York City. With a net worth of $25 billion in 2012, he is also the 10th-richest person in the United States.

He was frequently mentioned as a possible independent candidate for the 2008 presidential election, which fueled further speculation when he left the Republican Party. There was also speculation that he would run as a vice-presidential candidate. Bloomberg did not, however, seek the presidency nor was he selected as a running mate by any of the presidential candidates.

In 1996, Bloomberg endowed the William Henry Bloomberg Professorship at Harvard with a $3 million gift in honor of his father, who died in 1963, saying, "throughout his life, he recognized the importance of reaching out to the nonprofit sector to help better the welfare of the entire community."

Bloomberg reports giving $254 million in 2009 to almost 1,400 nonprofit organizations, saying, "I am a big believer in giving it all away and have always said that the best financial planning ends with bouncing the check to the undertaker."

On July 21, 2011, Bloomberg announced that he would donate $50 million to Sierra Club's “Beyond Coal” campaign, the grassroots organization’s efforts to close older coal plants and prevent new ones from being built. The gift, spread out over four years, will come from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Also in July 2011, Bloomberg launched a $24 million initiative to fund “Innovation Delivery Teams” in five cities. The teams are one of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ key goals: advancing government innovation.

In December 2011, Bloomberg Philanthropies launched a partnership with online ticket search engine SeatGeek to connect artists with new audiences. Called the Discover New York Arts Project, the project includes organizations HERE, New York Theatre Workshop, and the Kaufman Center.

Fundraising Pet Peeves

In a recent survey, one of the pet-peeves was when organizations do not take the time to write thoughtful text for their online fundraising pages.  This can translate to in person fundraising efforts as well.

When you are selling items or asking for donations do you take for granted that your prospective donor know about your organization and it’s needs?  Don’t be surprised by the question, many groups don’t know about the need to tell a “Good Story” when asking for donations or selling products to support their group.

Other pet-peeves were related to personal pages and the content is all about an event. Now, this was slightly less because the organization has taken time to create text for the page. Why does it irk readers when the personal page is all about the event? That’s easy, because individuals are here to donate.

They are looking for reasons to donate.  Attending an event is not about the event itself it should be about the reason for the event.  What does the event support.  What good will it do in and for the community.  Remember it is not about the event it is about telling a “Good Story” about the benefits that will come from the amount of money raised at the event.

Telling a “good story” about your groups needs is much like writing a good book.  Many authors talk about having a “hook” to grab the reader and keep the reader interested.

Does your group tell a “good story”?  Do you have a hook to keep you donors interested?  Does your story entice people who have never thought about giving to do just that, give to your group.  If not, why not?

One of the questions asked was “why didn’t you personalizing your page?” One answer in particular stood out to “other,” which was an open-ended question. An overwhelming number of people wrote “It looked good - didn’t see a need to change it.” Wow, I wasn’t expecting that answer.

If your fundraiser doesn’t have a great hook call Sunset Coupons and find out about selling a coupon book full of Free Lunches.

Understanding and Overcoming Fundraising Jitters

Fundraising can sometimes seem to be complex, confusing and even scary… but it needn’t be.  You see… great fundraising projects aren’t born, they are created by a group of hard working volunteers.

Anyone can become a great fundraiser by learning the principles behind raising money, then practicing over and over again.  While some people are naturally gifted fundraisers, for the most part, everyone in the fundraising world started off feeling confused and awkward.

If your organization’s mission matters, then fundraising isn’t immoral… it’s necessary!  Without the money to carry out your programs and vision, your organization will not be able to succeed in its service to others.

Your group, School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit needs funds to carry out your mission to help others and that is the story you need to tell.

The most important thing you can do, as someone who is fundraising, is to build deeper relationships between your prospect and the organization you are fundraising on behalf of.  Sure, bringing in a $100 check is nice, but building a strong relationship that results in 100 volunteer hours, $1,000 in donations, and several new contacts, all over three or four years, would be much more valuable.

Remember, before you start a new on-profit or new fundraising activity or campaign, check with the organization you are working with.  Rules on fundraising vary by country, state, and municipality.  Check with the non-profit you are working with before you start.

Selling products as part or all of your fundraising efforts can be very beneficial to your organization.  You are then offering a direct value rather than asking for donations.  Selling products means that you have a stable platform to work from.  Consider Sunset Coupon Books which allows you to offer $400 dollars in value for just a $10 dollar cost.  Your organization gets $5.00 for each booklet sold.

Understand That There Will Be “No’s”: And that’s ok!  Fundraising is like baseball… even the best, most experienced practitioners receive lots of “no’s.”  Don’t let them get you down.  They’re part of the game.

If you are looking for a high value and easy fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Charles E. Kaufman

Mr. Kaufman, who died in September of 2010 at the age of 97, bequeathed an estimated $50-million to the Pittsburgh Foundation. Most of the gift, between $35-million and $40-million, will go to a fund he established at the foundation in 2005, the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation. The fund supports research in biology, chemistry, and physics and supports awards “for achievement in and contribution to the field and humanity,” according to its mission statement. It was created with $1.5-million from Mr. Kaufman and has since given three awards of $50,000 each to researchers. The remainder of the bequest will go to a donor-advised fund Mr. Kaufman established in 1984 with his late sister, Virginia, that supports causes in Jewish health care, land conservation, programs for older adults, and public education.

He made his fortune late in life and said he wanted to earn enough to give a lot away. According to his lawyer and the executor of his estate, Wendy Denton Heleen, he made savvy investments in the stock market and several drug and science enterprises after he retired from his position at Merck.

Additionally, Mr. Kaufman left $3,340,000 to 25 charities across the nation, including organizations that focus on the environment, Jewish life and culture, social services, and higher education. They include $1-million to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, in Pittsburgh; $300,000 to Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Pittsburgh; $50,000 to the International Rescue Committee, in New York; $50,000 to the Jewish National Fund, in New York; $50,000 to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in Irving, Tex.; and $30,000 to American Forests, in Washington.

At the age of 92, Mr. Kaufman learned how to use a computer. While online, he came across the Welch Foundation, a grant maker in Houston that supports chemical research at educational institutions in Texas. Drawing inspiration from the foundation, Mr. Kaufman called Ms. Heleen to formulate his philanthropic plans.

A lifelong bachelor with no children, Mr. Kaufman lived for most of his life in the South Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh, much of the time with his sister. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of Cincinnati in 1936 and a master’s degree in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon in 1942.

Location Selling – High Energy Equals High Sales

Picture two sales tables set up in a high traffic location.

At one table the people just set and wait for people to approach the table.  They are polite and answer any questions.  They have literature available for those who ask about their group.  They will sell products or accept donations if the person asks about money needs.

The second sales table has several adults to man the table and rotating groups of their kids (a dance team) doing demonstrations.  Anyone who stops to watch is offered literature and a chance to purchase products or make a donation.  If a donation is made a cowbell is rung.  Each passer-by near the table is greeted, offered literature and thanked for their attention and interest.

You can understand which group does the most business and raises the most money.

Fundraising For Your Community

Should your group participate in “other” community fundraising events and programs?  After all aren’t you fully committed to raising funds for just your group?

It doesn’t matter what type of non-profit, school, sports team, church or community group you represent it is always better to be seen being part of your community than just a stand alone group.

People will remember your group helping other groups raise money for their cause.  When it comes time for your group to raise “their” funds it will be much easier for people to help you.  It could mean that their purchases or donations will even be a greater dollar amount.  Some people have been known to call this fundraising karma.

Your higher profile as a group that supports community fundraisers can even make it easier to find corporate partners to help you with your upcoming fundraising events.  If you are looking for a location to hold sales or donations events this can be a real door-opener.  Having a corporate partner can open your group up to both their employees and their customers.

Here is just one example of that synergy in action. Mark Michalak is owner of Jersey Mike’s Subs in Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake (Chicago suburbs). Jersey Mike’s likes to partner with local organizations to hold fundraisers. And through these fundraisers they've raised thousands of dollars for local sports teams, local schools and local organizations.  In 2012, they gave more than $20,000 to community organizations.

Your group working with others in your community will bring much needed public relations and press coverage to your group that can be used as part of the “story” that your group can use for your own fundraising credibility.

This can be the first big step your group takes in asking the community to support your projects financially, and the fantastic amount of money that can be raised demonstrates just how passionate local people are about seeing your group succeed. In the coming weeks and months.  You can then build on this momentum and launch a series of high profile community fundraising initiatives that will complement your overall financial strategy which also includes a complex mix of public and private financial backing.

At Sunset Coupons we want to help you make your next fundraiser easier and more successful.  Give us a call at 602-279-0404 to find out how we can help your group raise needed funds.

$2.00 Candy Bars Vs $10.00 Sunset Coupon Books

So your group needs to raise fund for the coming year.  You are looking around for something to sell to help you raise those funds.  One thing you might consider is candy bars vs Sunset Coupon Books.

In general you can find $2.00 chocolate bars that give your group a one dollar profit for each one sold.  To raise $2,000 dollars you need to sell 2,000 candy bars.  Consider that right now the sales of sweets are down overall.  People are more health conscious today than ever before and try to eat more healthy products.

Now consider Sunset Coupons, each book sold raises $5.00 for your group.  To raise $2,000 you will sell just 400 coupon books.  If your group were to sell 2,000 Sunset Coupon Books your group would raise $10,000.

The person making the purchase will have a wide variety of coupons to chose from.  Sunset Coupon Books contain over $400 dollars in savings and promotions from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will more than pay for the books. And who doesn’t need to save money these days?

Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.

No Up Front Cost
Sunset Coupons will consign books to bonafide established organizations. Call to see how your group can begin raising money with no out of pocket expense.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Bion R. Cram

Mr. Cram was a retired stockbroker who had worked at Spencer Trask & Company, and Shearson Loeb Rhoades, both in New York.

Mr. Cram, who was 93 when he died in 2008, left about $11.5-million to the Fryeburg Academy, a private school in Maine. Mr. Cram stipulated that about half of the money be used to endow scholarships, and the other half should go to support resources such as books, laboratories, and upkeep for the library, which the academy had named for Mr. Cram in 2002 after he donated $500,000 for a new building.

A scholarship student and 1933 graduate of the academy, Mr. Cram came to the school’s rescue in 2005 when, after a fire destroyed the institution’s gymnasium, he promptly donated $3-million to rebuild it. The donor also bequeathed $10-million to Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine, for a professorship in economics and for scholarships. Mr. Cram graduated from Bowdoin in 1937 with a degree in economics.

The Bion R. Cram Library has the challenge of meeting the needs of the students from widely varied backgrounds. The mission of the library collection is to provide students with access to a variety of media: consistent with curricular needs; enrichment materials which are related to the curriculum; and recreational materials. Located in the faculty research room within the library is the professional collection of educational and teaching materials, all of which address the curriculum. While the library does not attempt to satisfy all the needs of the local community, the community may use our existing resources. The library supports the mission of the school by not only teaching the use of the library, but also by providing an atmosphere consisting of respect, learning, and growth. Using the library is presented as a lifelong skill. The library provides personalized service to meet the needs of the students. We can now accommodate up to 3 classes and study hall students at once. We have carrels for quiet study, group study rooms, and easy chairs for reading. The post and beam construction in the reading room is quite beautiful. The library is approximately 8,500 square feet.

Make Your Fundraising Needs Real To Your Donors

It doesn’t matter whether you are a large multi-national non-profit or a local sports team you need to make sure that the requirements of your group are as real to your donors as they are to you.

That means you need to tell a good story about your group and your group’s goals.  The content needs to be supported by photographs as well.

In times of financial shortfalls, it is your grassroots base or donors that can turn on a dime to help narrow the financial gap or gaps in needed funds. Keep in mind that foundations and corporations often need months or even years to be cultivated, and most gifts come in on an annual basis and cannot respond to short-term need.

Money raised from the grassroots, which comes in as unrestricted funds, allows the creativity and flexibility to turn on a dime in times of economic or physical crisis. Unrestricted funds also allow to maintain our independence to work on the issues and strategic projects that we feel will have the most impact in.

Fundraising pushes us to be able to clearly articulate our values and why we personally invest in the work with our time and our money being the basis for success in dollar amount.

There is no doubt that fundraising is hard work — but there is nothing more satisfying than sharing deeply with others about this work and knowing that each dollar raised will help to ensure we are laying one more brick in the foundation of the end of poverty.

Once you have set your fundraising goals, decide which steps you and your group are willing to do to begin your fundraising campaign. Will you be asking for donations, selling products, doing community projects, looking for a sponsor or filling out grants? Do you know family or friends who are willing to donate for your trip? It never hurts to ask in a polite way.

At Sunset Coupons we want to help you make your next fundraiser easier and more successful.  Give us a call at 602-279-0404 to find out how we can help your group.

2013 Fundraising Resolutions

The start of a new year is a great time to weigh up your membership program’s strengths and challenges and set a course for new and improved direct response strategies.

But, too many broken; more not even begun.  And yet a new year feels like a time when we should look forward, plan, make promises to ourselves.

But just like resolutions that people make, it’s all too easy for nonprofits to set unrealistic goals and, worse, neglect to build the necessary foundation for achieving those goals. It’s great to want to raise more money online, for example, but unfortunately good intentions alone aren’t enough. You need a plan.

Start a monthly members giving program. In an era of higher new donor acquisition costs and shrinking donor prospecting universes, it’s important to tend your relationships with existing group members even more carefully.

Monthly giving is one highly effective way of curbing attrition and increasing long-term value of donors – and an increasingly important component of a successful direct response membership program.

Whether your organization has a large volunteer base or its only volunteers are on the board of directors, have you adequately educated your volunteers about the organization’s needs? Do you know where each of your volunteers works (or retired from) and where they worship?

Many corporations will make donations (or at the very least match individual gifts) to nonprofit organizations where their employees (or former employees) volunteer. All you have to do is ask them.

What are your fundraising resolutions this New Year?  What things will you do differently and which things will you want to keep doing in the same ways?  And, of course, what are your plans to keep yourself from being Too Busy to fund raise or having excuses not to?

It doesn’t take long for your group to raise the funds you need this year.  People are always looking for a bargain.  Let Sunset Coupons turn your new years resolutions into solutions.

If, on the other hand you are looking for a high dollar return, simple and easy fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Cold Weather Fundraising Ideas

It isn’t often we get to talk about cold weather here in the Valley of the Sun but right now with night time temps dropping into the twenties we can at least give them a nod.

Mini-doughnut eating contest ~ Or any food contest where people donate in order to participate. You can have tag-teams to let more be involved.

Themed volley ball ~ Have teams donate money in order to dress up in their own themed outfits and have a tournament.

Honey-Do ~ Raffle ticket buyers enter to win a crew volunteers to help with a home improvement project such as: paint, organize, put together shelving, install a light fixture, help winterize etc. you can set the limits.

Talent show ~ Entrance for a donation.

Bake good sale ~ Kick it up a notch with your baked goods for higher donation amounts. Ask more people if they can donate baked goods in order to save on the cost of ingredients.

S'mores ~ Offer people the chance to make s'mores at a bonfire when they give a donation. This can even be at a game tailgate.

Movie night ~ Rent or borrow a large projector and show an iconic movie with snacks for people who donate. It can be students or students with their families. Send out an invitation and remind them to bring their own chairs and blankets but you offer the hot coco.  Or... Have a smaller dinner and a movie night and serve attendees a meal while they watch a movie. You can ask people to donate foods / prep time and borrow tables and other supplies.

Restaurant take over ~ Some fast food chains used to participate in fundraising benefits to support area groups. Meet with the manager and ask if they will let you set up a time frame (i.e. Friday the 29th from 3-5pm) where they will donate a percent of the sales during that time. Just have people say the magic word (i.e. Prom) or show a ticket to the cashier. You just need to get as many people as possible to eat there during that time so keep it convenient.  Or... If you know someone with a restaurant who is willing to let you literally take it over for the night and have as many as can fit eat and donate.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Iris Cantor

Iris Cantor is a New York City and Los Angeles based philanthropist, with a primary interest in medicine and the arts. Cited as among the 50 top contributors in the United States, as head of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, her foundation has donated several hundred million dollars to museums, universities and hospitals since 1978.

Born Iris Bazel in 1931, the first daughter of Fay and Al Bazel, she grew up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York City. Her mother was originally from Pennsylvania and her father was a Jewish Russian immigrant. Her younger sister Enid was born three years later.

Drawn to Manhattan, she worked as a fashion model and stockbroker before eventually being hired by bond brokerage Cantor Fitzgerald around 1967, as an executive secretary. In 1977, she married the firm's founder and majority owner, Bernard Gerald Cantor. It was her third marriage, and lasted nearly 20 years until his death in 1996. By this time, "Bernie" Cantor had amassed a fortune said to exceed $500 million, receiving $50 million in annual dividends as of 1995.

Subsequent to his business success, Mr. Cantor became a well regarded art collector, and most notably had acquired over 750 sculptures and drawings by Auguste Rodin, and many American and European masters' paintings.

In 1978, the year after their union, the Cantors founded the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation as a vehicle for their philanthropy. In 1996, after acrimonious litigation with her husband's successor, Mrs. Cantor sold her inherited 55% stake to the 170 limited partners of Cantor Fitzgerald, and the company agreed to additionally fund the foundation.

Over the years, the foundation has donated approximately 450 Rodin pieces to museums around the world, with many going to New York's Metropolitan Museum and Brooklyn Museum, Stanford University and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

In 2010 Ms. Cantor pledged $20-million to New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center to establish a men’s health center, which will be named for Ms. Cantor and opened in 2011.

Your Approach is the Key

How you approach a person in your fundraising efforts is the real secret to making your sale.  The truth is, people never want to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.  Putting your prospect at ease will get you so much closer than anything else.

We have mentioned this before but we can not say it enough.  The real first step is a simple and genuine smile.  Next make eye contact, then greet the person by saying “Hello”.

You always want to be professional and positive at all times.  In your mind think of the person as being a buyer.  You can almost feel the connection being made with your prospect.

After the connection is made you have to follow through with the person.  Briefly tell them about your organization and why you are trying to raise money.

Show them your Sunset Coupon Book and explain the $400 value.  Show the person several of your favorite coupons and show several you think they might like.  People like the variety of coupon offers and that makes it easy for your customer to see coupons they will use and the high value of each coupon assures that your fundraising customers will receive the purchase price right back in the form of savings.  Unlike other books that only offer 10 to 20% off Sunset Coupons are mainly 50% or two for one specials.

You can discover where you are. Is the potential customer nodding and smiling?  Are their eyes drifting to the other people? Asking for the sale can tell you if you’re getting somewhere or wasting everyone’s time. It can also help to re-engage your potential purchaser. Basically, by asking for the sale, you’re checking to see if you’re getting through.

No matter what the outcome of your approach always follow-up with a sincere Thank You and Have a Nice Day.  Don’t be afraid to put that in your own words, but never leave it out.

We know at this time of year you are looking for a good dollar return, simple and easy fundraisers.  Please call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Philanthropic Donors: William S. Dietrich II

Mr. Dietrich was chairman of Dietrich Industries, a Pittsburgh manufacturer of metal frames, founded by his father. Worthington Industries bought the company in 1996 for $178-million.

Mr. Dietrich, who was 73 when he died in October, 2011 left an estimated $500-million to establish the Dietrich Foundation, to support more than a dozen Pittsburgh and other western Pennsylvania nonprofits. In the weeks before he died of cancer, officials at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh persuaded Mr. Dietrich to let them publicize two of the largest grants: A $267.5-million donation to Carnegie Mellon and a $125-million gift to University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Dietrich had planned for more than a decade to create the foundation. Using about $200-million, he set up several trusts in the mid-1990s and devoted his time and energy to investing the assets. He hoped the money would grow to $1-billion during his lifetime, said Edward J. Grefenstette, a longtime friend of Mr. Dietrich’s who was chosen by the philanthropist to lead the foundation. He might have reached that goal had he not been diagnosed with cancer in 2010.

With a sense of urgency, he completed his giving plans, hiring Mr. Grefenstette away from Carnegie Mellon (where he worked as chief investment officer and treasurer). Roughly 90 percent of the foundation’s money will go toward the endowments of colleges and universities, but Mr. Dietrich said the institutions could then use the earnings for any purpose. He set up a plan for the organizations to receive annual payments from the foundation. All of the nonprofits were chosen a decade ago by Mr. Dietrich, who had close relationships with most of the groups through business, civic, and personal connections.

In addition to his two biggest gifts, 11 other organizations will benefit from Mr. Dietrich’s generosity. He directed $25-million to Thiel College, the Greenville, Pa., institution where his parents, Kenneth and Marianna Dietrich, had met. The Pittsburgh Foundation will receive $18.1-million to support the three philanthropies Mr. Dietrich established at the community fund shortly before he died. Of those groups, one will support the Pittsburgh Foundation; another will benefit cultural and civic organizations in Conneaut Lake, Pa., Mr. Dietrich’s hometown; and the third will support similar programs in Greenville, Pa.

Princeton University, where Mr. Dietrich earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1960, will receive $15-million; Duquesne University will receive $12.5-million; and the United Way of Allegheny County, in Pittsburgh will receive $6.9-million. Six groups will receive $5-million apiece: Boy Scouts of America Laurel Highlands Council, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, Chatham University, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania’s Senator John Heinz History Center, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Dietrich’s decision to give the largest slice of the $500-million to Carnegie Mellon’s endowment was based on his long association with the university, where he had served as a trustee since 1997.

“He viewed Carnegie Mellon as the most important institution for the future of Pittsburgh,” said Jared L. Cohon, Carnegie Mellon’s president. “This notion of endowment and contribution to endowment was important to Bill. He saw our lack of significant endowment as a problem,” said Mr. Cohon. The university’s endowment before Mr. Dietrich made his gift was about $1-billion.

To honor Mr. Dietrich’s donation, the university has named its College of Humanities and Social Sciences for his mother, Marianna Brown Dietrich.

The $125-million gift to the University of Pittsburgh was the result not only of Mr. Dietrich’s board service (he had served on the university’s Board of Trustees since 1991) but also of his experiences there as a graduate student. In the late 1970s, Mr. Dietrich decided to enter graduate school while continuing to run Dietrich Industries. He earned a master’s degree in 1980 and a Ph.D. in political science four years later. For all of his focus on increasing the amount of money that would eventually establish the foundation and carry out his giving plans, his friends said Mr. Dietrich had a deep-rooted love of Pittsburgh and an insatiable appetite for academics, so much so that he continued to study on his own in later years and went on to write two books, In the Shadow of the Rising Sun: The Political Roots of the American Economic Decline, published in 1991, and a collection of essays, Eminent Pittsburghers: Profiles of the City’s Founding industrialists, published last year. He was working on a third book, about the economic rise of China, when he died.
