Mr. Cram was a retired stockbroker who had worked at Spencer Trask & Company, and Shearson Loeb Rhoades, both in New York.
Mr. Cram, who was 93 when he died in 2008, left about $11.5-million to the Fryeburg Academy, a private school in Maine. Mr. Cram stipulated that about half of the money be used to endow scholarships, and the other half should go to support resources such as books, laboratories, and upkeep for the library, which the academy had named for Mr. Cram in 2002 after he donated $500,000 for a new building.
A scholarship student and 1933 graduate of the academy, Mr. Cram came to the school’s rescue in 2005 when, after a fire destroyed the institution’s gymnasium, he promptly donated $3-million to rebuild it. The donor also bequeathed $10-million to Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine, for a professorship in economics and for scholarships. Mr. Cram graduated from Bowdoin in 1937 with a degree in economics.
The Bion R. Cram Library has the challenge of meeting the needs of the students from widely varied backgrounds. The mission of the library collection is to provide students with access to a variety of media: consistent with curricular needs; enrichment materials which are related to the curriculum; and recreational materials. Located in the faculty research room within the library is the professional collection of educational and teaching materials, all of which address the curriculum. While the library does not attempt to satisfy all the needs of the local community, the community may use our existing resources. The library supports the mission of the school by not only teaching the use of the library, but also by providing an atmosphere consisting of respect, learning, and growth. Using the library is presented as a lifelong skill. The library provides personalized service to meet the needs of the students. We can now accommodate up to 3 classes and study hall students at once. We have carrels for quiet study, group study rooms, and easy chairs for reading. The post and beam construction in the reading room is quite beautiful. The library is approximately 8,500 square feet.
