Recognition is one of the most important parts of working with volunteers. There are many ways to recognize your volunteerss. Here are a few suggestions.
Hold potlucks at the office and invite volunteers to make them feel like part of the team. Ask the volunteers to bring a big appetite.
Send your volunteers a favor such as a paper fan with a note, "Thank your for all of the FAN-tastic help".
Display a tree with the volunteers names and photos in the lobby or another prominet place.
If your organization is large enough and can afford a little more do something like rent a theather for an afternoon at the movies. Start by giving out awards and special recognitions.
Treat your volunteers as part of the staff .Distribute copies of appropriate memos, include volunteers in meetings and trainings when you can, and make sure each is informed of new policies, procedures, or activities in the organization.
Write a brief "Thank You" card telling them how much you appreciated their help on a project they were working on.
Many of our volunteers have full time jobs and busy careers or are students. Send letters of recognition to their places of work either directly to their superior or through the Human Resources office or school administrators.
Recognition doesn't have to be expensive. It does have to be sincere.
