Top Philanthropic Donors: Lin Arison

Mrs. Arison who is an author and film producer, is the widow of Ted Arison, the founder of Carnival Cruise Lines. Mr. Arison died in 1999.

A resident of Miami and Israel, she is working on her fourth book. Arison also holds the title of executive producer for an HBO miniseries and Oscar-winning documentary short film.

Mrs. Arison gave $39 million to the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, a Miami organization she and her late husband founded to identify young, emerging artists and help them at critical points in their careers.

Founded 31 years ago as the National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts, the organization announced earlier this week that it was buying the Bacardi property to use as its national headquarters

The $10 million to buy the site came from the organization’s endowment, which Arison boosted in 2010 after selling two pieces of art — a Claude Monet waterlily painting and a portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, Jeanne Hebuterne Wearing a Hat — for $39 million at auction. She sold them anonymously, but The New York Times identified her as the seller.

She currently serves on its board. Mrs. Arison has designated that the money be used to establish an endowment for the foundation’s YoungArts program. Earnings from the endowment will go toward new arts-education programs for high-school students and teachers.

Mrs. Arison said she was concerned that schools were cutting their arts programs. “Unfortunately, when they’re tightening budgets, they see the arts as frivolous,” she said. “We have to put arts back into the school system.”

Mrs. Arison is the author of Travels With Van Gogh and the Impressionists: Discovering the Connections, a personal memoir and travelogue in which she also explored the history of the impressionists.

Mrs. Arison has been named the winner of a prestigious national arts award for her work in arts education.  Americans for the Arts will present the 2012 National Arts Awards to Arison and fellow honorees in New York on Oct. 15. The awards were announced on Monday December 24th.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Henry and Jane Woods

Henry Woods taught English literature and was an heir to the Sahara Coal Company fortune. The Chicago company is now an investment-holdings firm. Woods, who was 84 when he died in 2005, and his wife, Jane, who was 87 when she died in 2007, left $58.5 million to the Lawrenceville School, a private high school in New Jersey.

The couple placed no restrictions on the gift. School officials say they plan to use the money primarily for financial aid and faculty salaries. Henry Woods graduated from the school in 1940 and returned in 1952 to teach English. He was chairman of the school's English department from 1978 to 1986, the year he retired.

He served on Lawrenceville's board of trustees from 1989 to 1995. In addition, the couple bequeathed $8.5 million to the North Shore Country Day School, a private school in Winnetka, Ill. Jane Woods graduated from the school in 1937.

The Woods family has a long history of philanthropy. Henry's grandparents, Frank H. Woods Sr. and Nelle Cochrane Woods, founded the Woods Charitable Fund, a private family foundation in Lincoln, Neb., in 1941. Henry's father, Frank Woods Jr. of Chicago, and Henry's Uncle, Thomas Woods of Lincoln, later led the foundation through the 1970s and 1980s, and Henry's father was instrumental in the development of the Council on Foundations.

When Frank Jr. and Thomas died in 1980 and 1989, respectively, the foundation went through a period of change and was later split into two organizations, the Woods Charitable Fund and the Woods Fund of Chicago.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

In keeping with the season we at Sunset Coupons would like to share a favorite Christmas story.

In 1897, Dr. Philip O'Hanlon, was asked by his then eight-year-old daughter, Virginia, whether Santa Claus really existed.  O'Hanlon suggested she write to The Sun, a prominent New York City newspaper at the time, assuring her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." He unwittingly gave one of the paper's editors, Francis Pharcellus Church, an opportunity to rise above the simple question and address the philosophical issues behind it.

Dear Editor
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?  Virginia O’Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Fundraising Groups Giving Back

This time of year Fundraising groups should also consider giving back to their communities.  I know that your group needs to raise funds to keep up with their commitments for your group’s needs.  But consider your group’s community image.  If you are also seen giving back could it not improve the results during your next fundraising effort.

We tend to think about the needy in our communities more this time of year than any other.  You could do a clothing drive, or a canned food drive and then make a donation to a local charity that caters to families in need.

A toy drive always is an appreciated service during the Christmas season.  You could work with an established group like Toys-For-Tots and the United States Marine Corps. Or you could work with a local food bank (they always now about community needs).  Many times local churches have an outreach program that you could tie your benefit to.

Always take the time to document both the collection and donation parts of your project in photos.  You can use them later to be part of your groups scrapbook or as part of your display at your next fundraiser.

You could even consider working with a local tree lot and helping those in need buy their holiday trees for a discounted price or even free.  You need to find a tree lot that will work with you during this time.  You could agree to purchase the trees at the last minute and deliver them to those families that would greatly appreciate them.

Consider that your group could simply volunteer time to many of the organizations that are already providing services to those in need.  Make it a group effort from your group to your community.  This is a great no cost effort that can still have all the other recognition and benefits for your group.

These group efforts can also lead to other benefits for your group in the coming months when you need to raise funds.  Your networking can really pay off in the long run.

If you are looking to raise funds for your group give Sunset Coupons a call at 800-627-6340 and find out how our quick and easy program can help you raise funds for your group.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Marc and Lynne Benioff

Marc Russell Benioff, born September 25, 1964, is the founder, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com, a cloud computing company.  Benioff started salesforce.com in March 1999 in a rented San Francisco apartment and defined its mission as The End of Software®. He is “credited with turning the software industry on its head” by using the Internet to “revamp the way software programs are designed and distributed.” He has long evangelized software as a service as the model that would replace traditional enterprise software. He is the creator of the term “platform as a service” and has extended salesforce.com’s reach by allowing customers to build their own applications on the company’s architecture, or in the salesforce.com “cloud”. He is the author of three books, including the national best seller Behind the Cloud.

Prior to founding salesforce.com, Benioff was at Oracle Corporation for 13 years in a variety of executive positions in sales, marketing, and product development. At 23, he was named Oracle's Rookie of the Year and three years later he was promoted to vice president, the company's youngest person to hold that title. Before joining Oracle, Benioff worked as an assembly language programmer at the Macintosh Division of Apple Computer, where he was inspired by the company and its co-founder, Steve Jobs. While still in high school, he founded Liberty Software, which specialized in microcomputer games, creating and selling games for the Atari system among others.

Benioff pioneered the 1/1/1 Integrated Philanthropic model, by which companies contribute 1 percent of profits, 1 percent of equity, and 1 percent of employee hours back to the communities it serves. Parts of this 1/1/1 model have been adopted by many other companies, including Google. In 2005, the members of the World Economic Forum named him as one of its Young Global Leaders. In 2007 the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy presented Benioff with the Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Award and in 2008 invited him to become a director of the board.

In June 2010 Lynne and Marc Benioff announced a $100 Million Gift to UCSF Children's Hospital with the goal of not only seeing the new hospital built but significantly advancing children’s health worldwide. In 2010, Benioff and his wife were named one of the Top 25 Most Effective Philanthropists by Barron’s

Sunset Coupon Book Sales As Part Of Your Donations

Are you raising funds this holiday season?  Does your group work with malls presenting or singing Christmas carols?  Do you accept donations while you are performing?

Try adding Sunset Coupon Books to your donation package.  You can place a sign with your donation kettle that states a “$400 dollar value Sunset Coupon Book for every $10.00 donation”.  You will find that many people will make the $10.00 donation.  It is a great incentive.  They help your group and get a great value in return.

You will have to have a volunteer staffing your donation table to handle the transaction.  Always make sure you clear all of your fundraising plans with what ever location you use to have your event.  All denomination amounts should be acknowledge with a Holiday Level Thank You.

Did You Know?

The Twelve Days Of Christmas Gifts Carol actual starts on Christmas day? The twelve days in the song are the twelve days starting Christmas Day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas or St. Stephen's Day, as being the feast day of St. Stephen to the day before Epiphany, or the Feast of the Epiphany. The Twelfth Night is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "the evening of the fifth of January, preceding Twelfth Day, the eve of the Epiphany, formerly the last day of the Christmas festivities and observed as a time of merrymaking."

Although the specific origins of the chant are not known, it possibly began as a Twelfth Night "memories-and-forfeits" game, in which a leader recited a verse, each of the players repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on until one of the players made a mistake, with the player who erred having to pay a penalty, such as offering up a kiss or a sweet.

The song apparently is older than the printed version, though it is not known how much older. Textual evidence indicates that the song was not English in origin, but French, though it is considered an English carol. Three French versions of the song are known. If the "partridge in a pear tree" of the English version is to be taken literally, then it seems as if the chant comes from France, since the red-legged (or French) partridge, which perches in trees more frequently than the native common  partridge, was not successfully introduced into England until about 1770.

Add Christmas Stockings For Donations

When you are set-up on locations selling Sunset Coupons Books you can offer a fun Holiday Theme to entice donations as an add-on or alternative to buying the Sunset Coupon Books.

Make sure that you display the stockings on the table and in plain sight so you know money is going in rather than being taken out.  Add a sign to you display that states “Donations Accepted.” Place it near your stocking displays.

As an idea you may want to start the stocking displays with some dollar bills already in place.  As an incentive you could also show either a five or ten dollar bill as well.  You can consider that the incentive is shown and the donation amount can be suggested by what is in the stockings.  Your location area may also be a guide and influence as to the dollar amount you show in your Christmas stockings.

The amount you raise will be more about your Sunset Coupon Book sales rather than donations but the extra from donations will always be welcome.

Easily raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit.

Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days?

Indoor Fundraising During Colder Months

During the summer you can use something as simple as a lemonade stand to raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit.  But as the cooler or even colder temperatures get here it means you may have to move indoors to do your fundraising, but where?

They more traffic you have that comes by your “stand” the better off you are. Where is there a lot of indoor traffic?  Shopping malls of course.  To get space for your booth in a shopping mall you have to contact the mall management for permission.

To find out how to contact the mall management you need to try the white pages or visit the mall itself.  Many malls have information booths and they should be able to tell you how to make contact.  If there isn’t an information booth you can ask at one of the stores in the mall.  A regular clerk may not be able to tell you but the manager should have that information.

If those two ideas don’t work try finding a security guard and give him a brief explanation of what you want to do and ask for directions to the mall management offices.  When you know where the office is make a short visit and see who you need to talk to and make an appointment for a meeting.

The person you meet with may already have a list of things you must do to be able to hold a fundraiser or have a booth at the mall.  You may also find that the mall has a policy that prohibits any type of fundraiser at all.  Don’t be discouraged.  Try a different mall.

Be prepared to tell a lot about your organization and what you use the funds for.  If would be good if you have photographs of other locations you have been at.  If you use the funds for trips that you organization makes have photos of the locations you have visited.

Your group may need to show how being at the mall would be good for the mall as well.  Having you there could be a sign of community good will.  If you have a large organization your presence could bring traffic to the mall and the stores (tenants) would benefit as well.

The mall may require that your group has insurance that protects the mall against damage or liability issues your group may cause.  A local insurance agent can help with a solution to that requirement.

After you have the space you may want to consider selling something as well as asking for donations.  In the Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson Arizona or Salt Lake City Utah areas please consider Sunset Coupon Books.

Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. Frances Lasker Brody, was an American arts advocate, collector and philanthropist who influenced the development of Los Angeles' cultural life as a founding benefactor of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and later as a guiding patron of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Gardens.

Mrs. Brody, who died on November 12, 2009 at 93, was the wife of Sidney F. Brody, a real estate developer who died in 1983, and the stepdaughter of Mary Lasker, a philanthropist and champion of medical research who died in 1994. The Brodys lived in a modernist house in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles that was designed by the architect A. Quincy Jones and the decorator William Haines to show off the couple’s collection.

Brody was born May 27, 1916, in Chicago to Flora and Albert Lasker, who built the advertising firm of Lord & Thomas. Lasker was legendary in the advertising world for campaigns that popularized Kleenex tissues, Lucky Strike cigarettes and Sunkist orange juice. She studied political science, English and history at Vassar College, where she graduated in 1937.

After college, she worked briefly as a model and saleswoman at a swank dress shop near Chicago. During World War II, while serving in a volunteer ambulance corps, she met Sidney Brody, a decorated Army lieutenant colonel who flew missions in Europe. They were married in 1942.  After the war, the couple moved to Los Angeles, where he built a fortune as a developer of shopping centers. He died in 1983.

Ms. Brody, who was 93 when she died in November 2009, bequeathed about $110-million to the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, in San Marino, Calif., where she was a member of its Board of Overseers for 20 years.

The donation came from the proceeds of the sale of her art collection, which included significant works by Alberto Giacometti, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso (including Picasso’s landmark “Nude Green Leaves and Bust”); her midcentury modern home in Los Angeles, which was designed by A. Quincy Jones; and miscellaneous valuables.

Holiday Fundraising in Salt Lake City Utah with Sunset Coupons

What fundraising groups in Salt Lake City could benefit from using Sunset Coupons Books during this holiday season?

All the local youth team sports like baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, fencing, hockey, basketball and bowling are out there needing to raise funds to buy equipment, uniforms and pay the fees to their sponsoring bodies.  They are out there competing to raise money during this holiday season along with all of the other great causes.

Churches need to raise funds to support their ministries, the church building itself, their educational programs, they need to support the community work they do like “meals and companionship for shut-ins and the elderly.  These services are even more important this time of year. They may have children’s educational programs and youth sports that serve the community and congregation.

Now if we move on to the local schools you all know that everything from music, to all the different sports programs, to art, the library, classroom needs and school trips are supported by fundraisings during the year end festivities.

Did you know that even colleges and university groups need to fundraise during the holiday season?  While many times the alumni help support college groups those funds can fall far short of the real dollars needed.  Big name schools have no trouble funding high profile sports and those teams needs, there are many groups on campus that turn to fundraising projects to make sure they can reach the budget goal.  If you have been part of a theater group, camera club, newspaper, science club (too many to name them all) then you know the needs they have for fresh sources of revenue.

Let Sunset Coupon Books show you a way to meet your needs.  No spoilage, not even a start up cost in many cases.  What has proven to be a easy sell based on the great benefit to small cost factor.  Your group, 100% matching funds with us as your partner.  Learn to celebrate the holiday season with extra funds using Sunset Coupon Books.

Learn To Be All Inclusive

The winter holiday season is permeated with feelings of peace on earth and the desire to help others. It is this time of year that people are more willing than ever to share their time and their money to help out a good cause.

While the winter holidays is the time of giving, it is also the time of many religious holidays which has to be considered in your communications.

According to a 2007 report by the Pew Research Center, 16.1% of the US population are not affiliated with any religion; Americans who are members of any Protestant denomination make up 51%. Fewer than 25% of the US population describes themselves as Catholic; Jews made up 1.7%; Buddhists 0.7%; Muslims 0.6%; other religions and unknown made approximately 5%

While you may have your own religious preference, the recipients of your fundraising communications may not share that preference. One way to include everyone in your winter fundraising efforts is to give other religions equal mention while also acknowledging those who do not celebrate religious holidays. Without this inclusiveness, it is easy for a topic such as religion to come between people.

Sure, not everyone may care about if their religion isn’t represented, but if it were, there might be more of a willingness to give – or give more.

Your goal is to further your cause, and including all others allows you to make everyone feel welcome to give. This concept of inclusion can carry over into any fundraising events where you might have holiday decorations as part of your decor, which means you’d have to make sure that others are also represented.

Using Sunset Coupon Books is very inclusive and locally focused.  People are always more comfortable working with local groups and Sunset Coupons benefit both the user and local merchants.

Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.

Be inclusive and think local benefits.

Holiday Season Bell Ringers

Its that time of year again.  There is a bit of a nip in the air and if you are out and about there is a very familiar sound in the air… the bell ringing of the Salvation Army Volunteers standing by their bright red kettles.  They are in-front of many stores and greeting us with a cheery holiday message.

The Salvation Army says bell ringing is a great way to get involved in its Christmas program. Officials say adult Sunday school groups and businesses are good groups to take part in this mission. All you have to do is give 2 hours of your time and you are giving someone a happy holiday season in the process.

The money that is raised for Salvation Army is used for local services in our communities to support those in need at Christmas and throughout the year. The Salvation Army helps nearly 30 million Americans each year through a broad array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless, opportunities for underprivileged children. 82% of every dollar spent is used to carry out those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.

At Sunset Coupons we help local groups, schools, churches, sports teams and charities raise funds by selling local coupon books that give a great value to the purchaser, the local merchants and the group that is raising the funds.

With the merchants permission you can set-up out front and do your version of holiday bell ringing.  Just offer the Sunset Coupon Books at $10 each.  They contain more than $400s in discounts, two-for-ones and free offers when used at local businesses.

Sunset Coupons will consign books to bonafide established organizations. Call to see how your group can begin raising money with no out of pocket expense.  We can imprint your group or school name and/or logo on the cover.

Top Philanthropic Donors: David and Patricia Atkinson

Mr. Atkinson retired in 1992 as a partner with Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd, a Philadelphia money-management firm. He now runs Atkinson & Company, the couple’s private-investment business.

Mr. Atkinson, 72, and his wife, Patricia pledged $80-million to Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y., to support the David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future, a research center focused on the challenges facing energy, the environment, and economic development around the world.

On October 28, 2010, Cornell celebrated an extraordinary new commitment from David and his wife, Patricia Atkinson, by renaming the Center in the Atkinsons' honor (video). The David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future (ACSF) will increase Cornell's visibility in sustainability research and allow the university to leverage important partnerships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and outside groups. It will draw together the vast resources of a university that is uniquely positioned to address some of the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing the world today.

David Atkinson is the founder of Atkinson & Company in Princeton, New Jersey. He retired in 1992 as general partner of Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd LLP, a Philadelphia-based investment counseling firm. He held a number of previous positions in the financial industry, including vice president in the research department of Morgan Stanley, cofounder of Franklin Capital Investors, and manager of the Scudder Development Fund at Scudder, Stevens & Clark. David earned an MBA in 1963 from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy for two years, after graduating with a BS from Cornell.

Mr. Atkinson has been an important adviser to Cornell University. As a member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Advisory Council, he chaired the Environmental Sustainability and Development Task Force that broadened Cornell's efforts in sustainability. A life member of the Cornell University Council, he was recently named a Presidential Councillor, the highest honor the university bestows.

Patricia Atkinson is a graduate of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She is active in the Princeton (New Jersey) Hospital Auxiliary, serving as membership chair for ten years and treasurer for two years, and a longtime volunteer for Princeton Meals on Wheels.

Cool Weather Fundraisers In Arizona

There's no reason to stop doing good when it gets a bit cooler outside. In some parts of the country everyone is tempted to curl up at home and hibernate, but it's about as good a time as any to have a winter party with a purpose.  In Arizona we don’t suffer from extreme cold weather.

Arizona winter fundraisers gives friends and family an excuse to get out of the house and be an active part of their community. Even here people tend to focus on family during the winter months due to the holidays.

Here are some fun and very easy winter fundraising ideas and winter fundraiser themes:

Bonfires:  Host an outdoor bonfire in a neighbor's yard or community area. Serve warm drinks like hot chocolate, tea, and coffee, and make s'mores. Have each guest bring blankets, coats, warm sweaters, shoes and non-perishable foods. Donate the goods to a local homeless shelter or food shelter.

Flagstaff or Pinetop Ski Weekend: Instead of running a marathon or walking a long distance, organize a charitable cross-country event at our state ski areas or laps at a local stating rink. This can run just like any other fundraiser: everyone signs up, raises a certain amount of money, and rallies on the big day to do the distance. Serve refreshments at the end and make sure to take lots of pictures of this fun winter fundraiser theme.

Have a Winter Carnival: Make it an old-fashioned night out, complete with carnival games, dunk-tanks, freshly popped popcorn, dancing, and bingo. This can be hosted at a church, a community center or a local YMCA. Charge for entry and games. All the money collected can be used to make a sizeable donation to a worthy cause, even your own group.

Sunset Coupon Books: Easily raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit. Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days? Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.  Coupon Books sell for only $10 each. You pay $5 for them so you make $5 for yourself for a full 100% profit. Local coupon book editions are available in Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson and Salt Lake City.

There really is no shortage of winter fundraiser ideas when you use your imagination and collaborate with friends. Winter parties with a purpose give everyone a little something to look forward to and keep the good spirit going well past the holidays.

If you are looking to raise funds for your group give Sunset Coupons a call at 800-627-6340 and find out how our quick and easy program can help you raise funds for your group.
