Understanding Your Fundraising Competitors

As you raise funds for your organization you learn how time consuming and difficult it can be.  You know that many organizations like yours are trying to raise funds for themselves and are competing for the same audience as your are.

Many times a school will have many groups, sports teams, musical, drama, ROTC, and many others all trying to raise funds at the same time and among the same well of dollars… the parents, family and friends.

You can add to that other fundraising groups that are not directly targeting your group but asking for donations just the same.  These can be seen every night on television and during the day by mail, email and in their places of work as well.

Your competition is not just the other groups in your school, in your neighborhood, in your city, in your state, in the nation but globally as well.

All of these well meaning groups are targeting your audience as well.  They need funds for their programs just like you do.  It is much like local churches now compete with global ministries for donations on Sunday.  They find well tuned TV programs that ask for the same dollars and for the same mission that they need to keep their doors open locally.

The competition for those dollars is not limited to other groups but also other needs of the families as well.  Donations come from “leftover” dollars.  If the car has broken down unexpectedly that repair becomes your competition as well.  That competition can be the air conditioner, a vacation, an illness or one of a hundred other things.

To get a job done you need the right tools and the right experience.  This is where Sunset Coupons comes in.  We have a product with great value that helps your donor do something for themselves as well as your group.

Give us a call at 800-627-6340 and see what we can do to help you overcome your competition for those needed fundraising dollars.

We have a product and a method that will help you raise those needed fundraising dollars.

David and Joan Lincoln

Mr. Lincoln founded the Lincoln Laser Company and a real-estate business in Phoenix. He is an heir to the Lincoln Electric Company fortune, the Cleveland manufacturer of welding equipment that his family founded in 1895.

Mr. Lincoln, and his wife, Joan, pledged $40-million to Claremont School of Theology, in Calif., to establish Claremont Lincoln University, a consortium of graduate schools designed to educate religious leaders of various faiths, while also providing a common curriculum focused on building understanding across religious, intellectual, and cultural differences. A payment schedule for the pledge was not available.

Under the interreligious Claremont Lincoln University umbrella, the Claremont School of Theology will remain a seminary of the United Methodist Church, and master’s and Ph.D. programs will be offered by two outside institutions: the Academy for Jewish Religion, California, and the Islamic Center of Southern California. University officials said they plan eventually to add graduate programs from other religious schools as well.

Mr. Lincoln is the chairman of the Claremont Lincoln University and has served on the Claremont School of Theology’s Board of Trustees since 2003. The couple gave $10-million toward the new interreligious university in 2010.

The Lincolns also pledged $4-million last year to the John C. Lincoln Health Foundation, in Phoenix, to renovate the John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital’s lobby. The hospital was named for Mr. Lincoln’s late father; his late mother, Helen, founded the nonprofit that eventually led to the building of the hospital in 1951. David Lincoln serves on the foundation’s Board of Directors.

Make Your School Fundraiser A Winner

There are lots of fundraising ideas out there for schools, but most of them offer little bang for the substantial buck that they require (not to mention the time investment). Create an online fundraising campaign for your school instead, and ask neighbors and grandparents to donate. They might just appreciate not having to buy more catalogue items, and much more money will go straight to your school instead of to the fundraising company!

You can try some of the following or give Sunset Coupons a call right-away!

Student Artwork Product Sale
Your proud relatives will line up to buy products personalized with your child's artwork, such as note-cards, t-shirts, and tote bags. SilverGraphics.com is one company that offers creative fundraisers like this. The sale will encourage your young Picasso and benefit his school!

Garage or Yard Sales
One person's junk can be a school's treasure! Organize a garage sale, and you'll clean out your house and give back to the community at the same time. The school gets 100 percent of the profits, and you get a cleaner house!

Engraved Bricks and Ceramic Tiles
People like to make a lasting impression — so give them the opportunity to leave their mark. Sell engraved bricks or ceramic tiles that will be used in a school walkway or courtyard, or to decorate a wall.

Car WashesFind a local car wash business to sponsor your event, or have a DIY car wash in a prominent parking lot where you supply the helpers, soap, water, and towels. Kids can design signs to advertise your fundraiser on main street corners.

When involved in fundraising for your group you need to apply another adage.  There is a very light hearted definition of the market for your fundraising.  “As long as they are breathing they are buyers.”

Need help for your next fundraising project, looking for fast and easy?  Give call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340.

Tips for Writing Great Fundraising Letters

The key to many fundraising campaigns is how well you can distinguish yourself from other charitable groups competing for donations. That’s where great fundraising letters become critical to your success.

Here are some tips to write great fundraising letters:

This may sound obvious, but make sure you clearly explain the problem or reason you are raising money in the first place. This may sound easy. How do you get your message across quickly yet have a strong impact on a reader? Remember if you don’t grab them quickly the odds of them reading the rest of your letter is greatly reduced.

After explaining the problem, write about how the problem can be solved by the person who will read your letter. Not only should you explain how as a team you can solve the problem, you should also address the consequences that might happen if you do not get the help you are looking for. Stop and think about this point very carefully. It is very important to change the mind of fence-riders.

In the letter be specific in how the reader can help. If you need money and only money make sure the letter says so. If there are other opportunities to help, show those opportunities and how the reader can volunteer.

As you write your fundraising letter try to use the same words you would as if you were speaking face to face with the reader. Do not over-write. Make sure you clearly define your fundraising mission. If you are looking for a $25 donation say so. As you write make sure you write as if the person reading the letter shares your passion for the work you are doing. If they don’t then they probably should not be on the mailing list you are using anyway so assume they do.

Make sure to include deadlines which indicate some sense of urgency. When the reader is done with your letter you want them to know you need their help right now, not next week or next month.

At the end of the letter include a P.S. that passionately acts as an immediate call to action. You might even want to use a highlighter to highlight that call to action. After all, that is why you are sending out the letter in the first place.

If you are looking to raise funds for your group give Sunset Coupons a call at 800-627-6340 and find out how our quick and easy program can help you raise funds for your group.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Mica and Ahmet Ertegun

Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Scholarships in the Humanities

The University of Oxford has established The Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities, which will be launched immediately with 15 scholarships a year and will eventually be endowed in perpetuity to award at least 35 graduate humanities scholarships annually.

Leading humanities students from throughout the world will compete for full graduate scholarships in fields as diverse as literature, history, music, archaeology, art history, Asian studies, and Middle Eastern studies.

The recipients of the prestigious award will have the exclusive use of The Mica and Ahmet Ertegun House for the Study of the Humanities, a five-storey Georgian building in the heart of Oxford, which will be fitted out with state-of-the-art technological capability and serve as the base for study and research by the Ertegun Scholars.

The gift will ultimately amount to more than £26 million. In addition to funding the scholarships themselves in perpetuity, the gift will also endow in perpetuity the salary of a full-time Ertegun Senior Scholar in Residence who will provide mentorship for the Ertegun Scholars, and a programme of lectures, seminars, concerts and other activities at Ertegun House.

Mica Ertegun, the Romanian-born widow of famed Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, lives in New York City and is one of the world’s foremost interior designers.

'For Ahmet and for me, one of the great joys of life has been the study of history, music, languages, literature, art and archaeology,' Mrs Ertegun said.

'My dream is that, one day, Ertegun Scholars will be leaders in every field – as historians and philosophers, as archaeologists and literary scholars, as writers and composers, as statesmen and theologians.'

Charity Fundraising Affected By Politicos

During presidential election years charity fundraising is often affected in a negative way.  The quick judgment is that with all the large and small donations going to the various fundraising done by the politicians there is little left for traditional group and charity fundraisers.

In some cases fundraisers often expect that donations and sales will be down for the later part of presidential election years.  It is an expected change and the charity fundraisers actually plans for donations to be down.  Expected or planned for outlooks turn into real life results.  These self-fulfilling prophecies are the result of the sub-conscious expectations.

We all know that people who think they are going to be sick are more likely to fulfill that expectation and the same thing happens when a business owner expects sales to be bad.  The business owner does things that cause his expectations to be realized.

Don’t let sub-conscious expectations affect your fall fundraising plans.  Let them affect the other guys fundraising plans.  Let others cut back or not plan fundraisers thinking the outcome will be disappointing.

Businesses that increase advertising rather than cut back promotions actually do better when times are tough. More importantly they do even better as the economy picks back.

Much of the time survival and growth are a matter of how we think about things. I heard a story one time of two shoe salesmen that went to a foreign country. When the first guy got off the plane and walked around he noticed that nobody wore shoes. He promptly called the home office and said “This is a terrible idea. There is no opportunity here because nobody wears shoes!” The second salesman got off the plane and as he walked around he noticed the same thing, nobody wore shoe. He promptly called back to his home office and excitedly reported that this was a great idea and there was opportunity everywhere because nobody wore shoes.

Some people say “think positive” and that is correct, but that is not all. We have to think “right” and then go and do something about it. Take action…work.  We could say faith, belief, and right thinking, but without action, effort, and work it is of no avail, no use, and worthless.

If you are looking to raise funds for your group give Sunset Coupons a call at 800-627-6340 and find out how our quick and easy program can help you raise funds for your group.

Best Fundraising Tips

Maximized Value Leads To Maximized Results
Make this your basic goal. Having more value means reaching more prospects. More value means more buyers and donors. More value means more a better ROI for your group or charity!

State A Value Proposition
Sum up the specifics of what you're doing and why in two sentences or less. State exactly what your fundraiser is all about. Make sure it has a compelling call to action. Include it in all your communications and fit it into your sales script.

Learning To Help Others
Don't forget to increase your organization's visibility by giving back to the community. Visit the elderly, volunteer your group to help with other charity work such as Special Olympics or Community Warmth programs. Work with groups like the ASPCA.  Write letters to military personnel posted overseas, or other causes that have special meaning or relationship to your group.

Set A Published Goal
Make a commitment about your group's fundraising goal and state it publicly. This causes your mind to internalize it as a verbal commitment. Your goal should be realistic, but also aim high. Structure your sales efforts to emphasize and reward achievement of that goal.

Keep It Fun
Fun is part of fundraising. Don't make it drudgery to be a volunteer or a participant. Remember that they're giving up their free time to help. Plan fun things to do during each stage of the process that reward involvement.

Quality, Quality, Quality
Quality presentations and quality goods mean more sales. Quality rewards mean more motivation. A quality program exudes confidence and confidence breeds success.

Avoid Any Unnecessary Risk Taking
Always caution against unsafe selling practices. All neighborhood sales activities should include adult accompaniment. Seller safety should be your very highest priority.

Have A Written Project Plan
Run your fundraiser like a small business. Have a written project plan that spells out all roles and responsibilities. Slot motivated individuals into those roles and equip them with everything they need to do a great job.

If you are looking for a Maximum Value and yet Easy Fundraiser with these properties already built in call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Never Limit Your Fundraisers Appeal

You would never do that!  It would be very short-sighted to have limits on your fundraiser’s appeal.  No one doing fundraising would do that.  But, are you sure you aren’t letting that happen right now?

When your group or charity is raising funds it breaks down to the individuals that are actually doing the day-to-day work.  If you can, observe them going about the actual work.  Unless they are very well trained you will find that they will tend to fall into patterns of appeals.

They will work with those they are comfortable with; friends, family and co-workers.  Those groups tend to fall into a similar age group as well.

While each individual may tend to be better with certain groups and be very successful with their group you don’t want to have those limits overall.  So as you build your working group make sure they have divers backgrounds.  That makes sure that your appeals aren’t blocked from or by different age ranges, ethnicities, economic strata or religious groups.  Your appeals need to reach all demographics.

So if you are selling directly to consumers or sending emails asking for donations you don’t want arbitrary limits to crop-up when making those appeals.

When an inexperienced persons is making an appeal the first “no” they get, may set a pattern of avoidance to the persons or their stereotypes that matches that “first no.”  This avoidance phenomenon is easy to observe and very hard to correct if it is allowed to set-in.

If you are looking for a high value and easy fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest

The Lenfest Foundation is dedicated to supporting programs primarily in the areas of education, arts and the environment.

H.F. (Gerry) and Marguerite Lenfest established the Foundation in 2000. The Foundation is based in suburban Philadelphia and primarily supports organizations and programs in southeastern and south central Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and northern Delaware.

H.F. Lenfest was born in Jacksonville, Florida, then later grew up in Scarsdale, New York and Hunterdon County, New Jersey. After attending Flemington High School, and graduating from Mercersburg Academy, Lenfest went on to receive his BA from Washington and Lee University in 1953 and his LLB from Columbia Law School in 1958. He served in the Navy between college and law school. Lenfest worked at the firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell before becoming, in 1965, associate counsel to Triangle Publications, Inc., the media company controlled by Walter Annenberg. In 1970, he was named head of the Communications Division at Triangle. He formed Lenfest Communications in 1974 and sold it to Comcast in 2000 for $6.7 billion. Mr. Lenfest currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TelVue Corporation. He is also the majority shareholder of this company.

Donations

In 2007, Lenfest announced a donation of $33 million to be spent solely on faculty compensation at his alma mater, Washington and Lee University, where he serves as a trustee, and an unpublished amount to Wilson College, Mrs. Lenfest's alma mater. In recent years, Lenfest has given over $100 million to Columbia University, where his donations include a $48 million challenge gift toward the endowment of 32 new professorships, $15 million toward construction of a Law School residence hall which bears his name, $15 million to support the programs of the Earth Institute, $12 million to endow awards for outstanding teaching, and most recently a $30 million pledge to help build a multidisciplinary arts venue on the Manhattanville campus. 'Gerry' and Marguerite Lenfest have given the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia $63.6 million in endowment, annual giving, underwriting of faculty chairs and student fellowships, bricks and mortar. H.F.Lenfest is Curtis' board chairman.

Core Programs

The Foundation operates the Lenfest College Scholarship Program primarily for students in rural areas and the Lenfest Ocean Program with the assistance of The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Grants Initiated By The Founders

The Lenfest Foundation makes grants primarily initiated by its founders and approved by the Foundation’s board of directors to qualified nonprofit organizations for specific projects or activities of interest generally within the mission of the Foundation.

Most of the Foundation’s funding will be directed to its core programs and grants initiated by its founders and approved by its board of directors.

Steps For Efficient Fundraisers

Looking for a simple formula for your next fundraiser? What follows is a simple step-by-step list to help you understand the process for the fundraiser.

Keep the event organized. There’s nothing more aggravating to guests than a poorly organized situation, which makes them wait in line, wait for food, or wait for the next presentation to start.

Be considerate of your guests. Think about the time of day of the event, and which refreshments they would appreciate. Making them comfortable keeps them in good spirits.

Provide entertainment during slow times in the event to keep people interested and happy.
Avoid long, dull speeches.

Give guests a break from presentations with something fun to do. This can be the entertainment, dinner / lunch, and / or refreshments.

Encourage guest participation often to get guests really involved in the event. For example, allow guests to ask questions during a Q&A session.

Offer additional ways for guests to donate money, such as a raffle.

If you are looking for a high value and much easy fundraisers call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

A Good Return For Your Customers

I’m sure you have heard the old adage” Do only the right things and only for the right reasons”.

That is always a good one to keep in mind when setting up your fundraising programs.  Another common idea that is present in many people is the phrase. “What is in it for me.”  They are willing to help if there is something in it for them.

When you are working to raise funds for your group the friends and family have a vested interesting in helping.  But the community at large will, for the most part, need a reason to help beyond just being nice to your group.

These are two great reasons to use Sunset Coupon Books.  That serve the customer or donor by featuring many local merchants with two-for-one specials.  These buy one-get-one offers on food, entertainment and recreation are high value and much appreciated by the buyers.

You are helping your group and helping the buyer as well.  The buyer sees the value for them and the low price of just $10 dollars is very easy to afford and the over $400 hundred dollars in value is a great return on their purchase.

This is what becomes a very easy to sell Win-Win-Win proposition.  Your group benefits, your customer benefits and the local merchants get to introduce their products and services to new customers.

That sure sounds like doing the right thing for all the right reasons!  Sunset Coupons wants to help you raise money using the best practices and our useful advice about fundraising strategies.

A good return for your customers leads to a successful fundraiser for your group or charity.

Telling Your Story Improves Trust

If you have been watching TV lately you know how many stories have run telling how high profile charities that sound like they are doing wonderful work are turning out to be big frauds.  People then begin to mistrust all groups asking for money.

This type of guilt by association can be very harmful to all fundraising projects.  You want to assure your donors that your groups fundraising is going to a group that not only deserves consideration, but that it uses the funds they raise responsibly.

The best way to do this is by making sure that you tell the story of how your group uses its funds.  You want to make part of your offer a story of the need for the funds and how they will be used.

This can be a uncomplicated spoken story or a simple handout that lists the breakdown of funds that come in and what percentage that ends up being used by the group.

With a simple volunteer based group, say youth sports you can tell the story that 100% of the profits go toward the needs of the group.  The donors or customers will be glad to know that there is no waste or fraud in your local group.

Make sure your story breaks down the need for the funds and how they will be used to help your group achieve their fundraising goals.  The history and the length of time that your group has been in existence can be helpful in fundraising as long as the customers know the facts.

A simple photo album can help tell the story of the way funds have been used in the past.  You can add newspaper stories that feature your group to the album as well. God press is always a big plus as you tell your group’s story. Make sure you display awards, ribbons and trophies that your group has earned.

Paul Newman’s Philanthropy Lives on Tthrough Newman's Own

Newman's Own is a food company and for-profit corporation founded by actor Paul Newman and author A. E. Hotchner in 1982. Newman received all of the profits from product sales and donated 100% of the proceeds, after taxes, to various educational and charitable organizations of his own selection.Newman's Own has inspired other business, including Give Something Back Business Products, to adopt his social enterprise model. In 1982 Newman summarized his initial intentions regarding distribution of his company's profits:

My profits will be divided between a number of tax-deductible charities and causes, some church-related, others for conservation and ecology and things like that.

The brand started with a homemade salad dressing that Newman and Hotchner prepared and gave to friends as gifts. The successful reception of the salad dressing led Newman and Hotchner to commercialize it for sale. After that initial item, made with $40,000 of Newman's own funds as seed money.

That effort mushroomed into a multimillion-dollar business that today makes 100 natural products — cookies, pasta sauce, salsa, pizza, frozen entrees and beverages , and gives all its profits away, including to nonprofits in Utah.

Over US$330 million as of June 20, 2012, according to the Newman's Own website had been generated for charity since 1982. The company co-sponsors the PEN/Newman's Own First Amendment Award, which is presented annually to a United States resident who has fought courageously, despite adversity, to safeguard the First Amendment right to freedom of expression as it applies to the written word.

A sampling of grantees is available at the Newman's Own Foundation website along with the distribution of funds by program area. From 2006 to 2008 the largest portions of funding went to human services, health, education, arts, and cultur One beneficiary of his charity is the Hole in the Wall Camps, residential summer camps for seriously ill children, which he co-founded in 1988. Today, there are eleven member camps around the world with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Over 135,000 children have attended a Hole in the Wall Camp free of charge, and it is expected that over 17,000 children will attend a Hole in the Wall Camp in 2009. While proceeds from Newman's Own financed the startup of the camp, it now receives funding from many other sources. Other beneficiaries of the profits from Newman's Own have included The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund (from 1983 onwards), the George Washington Carver Community Center (Norwalk), the Safe Water Network, Women of Worth,  Stars for Stripes,  the Sun Youth Organisation (Montreal),  and the Breast Care Centre at Singleton Hospital through the Swansea National Health Service Trust.

The absolute integrity of the intent and everything that was done  not just by Paul but everybody involved with it  have set a mode. And of course, Paul’s celebrity didn’t hurt. The fact that it was Paul Newman drew attention to it, and people saw that, hey, you can do these things. And that’s where the inspiration comes from.

Newman died in 2008, but his longtime friend Robert Forrester directs the Newman’s Own Foundation that keeps the business viable in order to continue its philanthropic efforts.

Independence Day – Fun Facts, History & Trivia about the 4th of July

Add caption
Here are some Independence Day fun facts, history and trivia.  On July the 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress. Thereafter, the 13 colonies embarked on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. This most American of holidays is traditionally celebrated with parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country. As you send out your July 4th party invitations, take a minute to think about how much you really know about what we are celebrating.

The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament.

In May, 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless; a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress.

Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee.

Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.

The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon.

June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, looking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1804.

Before cars ruled the roadway, the Fourth of July was traditionally the most miserable day of the year for horses, tormented by all the noise and by the boys and girls who threw firecrackers at them.

The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek and was celebrated by Lewis and Clark in 1805.

On June 24, 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C., to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote.

Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826.

The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.

The names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths.

Thomas McKean was the last to sign in January, 1777.

The origin of Uncle Sam probably began in 1812, when Samuel Wilson was a meat packer who provided meat to the US Army. The meat shipments were stamped with the initials, U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for “Uncle Sam”. This joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the United States government.

In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.

Thirty places nationwide with “liberty” in their name. Liberty, Missouri (26,232) boasts the highest population of the 30 at 26,232. Iowa has more of these places than any other state at four: Libertyville, New Liberty, North Liberty and West Liberty.

Eleven places have “independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents.

Five places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these.

There is one place named “patriot” — Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202.

And what could be more fitting than spending the day in a place called “America”? There are five such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents.

Happy Fourth Of July

Tips For High School Fundraisers

Finding the right fundraiser for high school groups is not an easy thing to do. Motivating a high school student to participant in a fundraiser is an even tougher thing to do. High school fundraisers are a different animal compared to the fundraisers run by the middle schools and elementary schools. The main difference is that the fundraisers are not run by a parent organization such as a PTA or PTO. The students run these fundraisers, so relying on the parents to be the driving force of these fundraisers are unrealistic.

School-wide high school fundraisers do not work. High school fundraising is more segmented to smaller groups. Sports teams, school clubs, student councils, etc. are the types of groups where this type of fundraising works. Smaller groups have participants that will see the benefits of there hard work. Whether it’s new uniforms for the football team, traveling expenses for the debate club or costs related to the prom, these are the types of achievable goals which high school fundraisers are designed for. There must be a specific purpose and this must be relayed to the participating members for a fundraiser to be successful.

1. Offer realistic incentives. Finding the right way to motivate high school students can be a challenge, but we find that the incentives that work are the one that are of practical use. We recently worked with a school for the Junior Class fundraiser and they offered free prom tickets to the top 5 sellers. Their sales tripled from the previous year. Another group offers an iPod to the highest seller and iTunes discount cards to the next top 10 sellers. The point is to find the right thing that will motivate the student to participate. Find a motivator they actually care about.

2. Use social marketing to your advantage. Many groups are now using social marketing tools such as Facebook and Twitter promote their fundraisers. This is a great way to get the word out to the community, as well as convey the message and goals of your fundraiser.

3. Run a unique program. Make sure that none of the other groups are running the same program. I know this sounds simple but we’ve had groups run into this problem before. So do your research to find out what other groups are doing to avoid any conflicts.
