Remembering Our Heritage At Gettysburg

November 19th 2013 is the 150th Anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The address was first delivered nearly five months after the major battle that left tens of thousands of men wounded, dead or missing. President Lincoln face the crowd on that day with a heavy heart and in a few words left a legacy that lifts-up our country even today.

It was re-read today by a re-enactor to mark the anniversary. The ceremony included a wreath-laying at the Soldiers' National Cemetery. There also was a graveside salute to U.S. Colored Troops at noon (EST), and a tree planting ceremony in the afternoon.

Labor Day September 2nd 2013

In the United States, Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a celebration of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. In the United States and Canada, however, the official holiday for workers is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the Labor movement.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Raymond and Ruth Perelman

Since 1992, Raymond Perelman has been President and Chairman of the Board of RGP Holdings, Inc., a privately held holding company comprised of a vast array of manufacturing, mining and financial interests. Mr. Perelman serves as a PENN Medicine Trustee, and is a 1940 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business.

Mr. and Mrs. Perelman are Trustees of the Raymond and Ruth Perelman Education Foundation, Inc., which supports Jewish cultural and welfare organizations, as well as arts and history museums and other cultural institutions. The Perelmans are parents to Jeffrey E. and Ronald O. Perelman, who also have distinguished careers in both business and philanthropy, and close ties to the city of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Perelman, 94, and his wife, Ruth, who was 90 when she died last summer, pledged $225 million to the University of Pennsylvania to endow the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine. The Perelmans placed no restrictions on how the money should be used. University officials have said they plan to hire more medical researchers and faculty members and increase financial aid for medical students.

Mr. Perelman serves on the medical school’s Board of Trustees and graduated from the university’s Wharton School in 1940. The couple, who announced this pledge several months before Mrs. Perelman died, gave the university $25 million in 2005 for the Ruth and Raymond Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Mr. Perelman said he and his wife began learning more about the health-care system and the needs of the medical profession after they gave the 2005 donation. He told The Chronicle that the couple decided to pledge the $225 million to the medical school because of their concerns about the American health-care system and the demands of the new law to overhaul it.

The couple also pledged nearly $1.3 million to the National Museum of American Jewish History for the Philadelphia institution’s new building. Mr. Perelman serves as a museum trustee. In addition, they pledged $600,000, of which $100,000 has been paid, to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, in Miami; and they gave $100,000 to each of four nonprofits: American Friends of Israel Museum, in New York; Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Perelman Jewish Day School, in Wynnewood, Pa.; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Perelmans also gave $50,000 to the Cleveland Clinic.

Fundraising Ideas You Don’t Know About!

Often, the most challenging part of fundraising is coming up with a new idea that will help motivate your group. If you are tired of brainstorming sessions that just bring up ideas that are ones you have tried and tried again here are some ideas that may be brand new to you.

Actors – Ask your thespian-oriented friends to improvise for a "play party". Invite all of your friends, serve hors d'oeuvres and ask for a suggested donation at the door.

Coins – Go to your local mall or shopping center and ask what they do with the coins in the fountain.

Cook Off – Solicit local celebrities to enter their best dishes and have people pay to vote on the winners.

Balloon Raffle – Sell balloons for $10 each and insert a number in each that corresponds to a raffle ticket given to the purchaser. Pop a balloon for each available prize and read off the winning number.

Donate Gold
– Participants ask friends and family to donate old jewelry they no longer wear and turn the gold in for cash.

For the Birds – Deliver a flock of fake pink flamingos to a donor’s yard and leave a note explaining the cause and asking for a donation to “replant” the flamingos in the yard of the next “victim” the first donor designates.  Pick your targets carefully.
