I Can’t Sell – I Can’t Fundraise

Next to the fear of speaking in public is the fear of selling or being a salesperson.  Most folks are quite sure they can’t sell.  The rest simply don’t like selling at all.

This fear of selling usually comes from dealing with a poor or pushy salesperson in your past.  Every so often, we walk into a store and are immediately bombarded by a salesperson who needs to meet their quota for the day.  They attempt the hard sell, set up dressing rooms, force themselves on us, and put you in the uncomfortable position of having to repeatedly tell them “no.”

Bad salespeople are almost always the result of being poorly trained or motivated.  That type of selling, the used car style, gives all salespeople a bad rap.

The key to “good” selling is putting the customer’s needs first.  No matter what type of fundraising you are doing you are selling.  In some cases it is selling a physical product.  The profit from the sales goes to support your group.  In some cases the selling is the selling of your group.  Or selling the cause of your non-profit.  So how do you put the needs of the customer first when you are asking them to support “your” cause.

If your group is working to support children the underlying goal is to make them better citizens.  If they are good citizens the population as a whole would benefit.  That is helping your donor’s “life” as well. There are also receiving a direct benefit in buying the product you are selling.  You are selling something that has benefits for the buyer as well as your fundraising group?

Your group should never be selling something that you don’t see the value in.  You should never try to sell something that you would not consider buying.  Doing so puts the seller at a physiological disadvantage. You don’t feel truly positive about the item being sold and it will come across to your buyer.

If you want to do a better job for your school, sports team, youth group, church or non-profit you should consider getting some sales training or read a good book about the art of the soft sell.  If your selling is really the wrangling of children in your group at games or events then some basic training for your “group” may be in order.  Simple and proper training can make your charges much more effective and successful “saleskids”.

Top Philanthropic Donors: William S. Dietrich II

William S. Dietrich II (May 13, 1938 – October 6, 2011) was the successful industrialist who grew Dietrich Industries (later bought by Worthington Industries) and late in life made two of the largest charitable contributions in higher education history to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

Dietrich was born in Pittsburgh in 1938 and spent much of his youth in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania, graduating from Conneaut Lake High School in 1955. He then majored in history while attending Princeton University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1960. He then served in the United States Marines. Following his military service, he returned to Pittsburgh to work at his father's company, originally a small lumber company that eventually grew into Dietrich Industries, which specialized in purchasing and repurposing scrap steel. Dietrich rose from salesman to president and eventually chairman and CEO and Dietrich Industries eventually grew into the United States' largest manufacture of light-metal framing for the construction industry with more than 1,800 employees at 19 plants in 17 different states. He sold Dietrich Industries in 1996 and used the proceeds to fund a charitable trust, which grew substantially from investments and from which he made his future gifts.

On September 7, 2011 Carnegie Mellon University announced a $265 million gift from Dietrich, the largest gift the university had received and one of the 10 largest by an individual to private higher education in the United States. In honor of the gift, Carnegie Mellon renamed the university's College of Humanities and Social Sciences to the Marianna Brown Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences after Mr. Dietrich's mother.

Later that month, on September 22, 2011, the University of Pittsburgh, where Dietrich has earned two degrees and served on the board of trustees, announced it had received a $125 million gift from Dietrich. The gift was also the largest Pitt had received up until that time and 10th largest private gift to public higher education in the United States. To commemorate the gift, the university officially renamed its School of Arts and Sciences to the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the Board of Trustees meeting on October 28, 2011.

Prior to his death, Dietrich was reported to have said that he was "moved by the thought of his parents gazing eternally at each other across Panther Hollow through the two schools that now bear their names."

Other significant contributions included $25 million Thiel College, $12.5 million to Duquesne University, $10.6 million to the Pittsburgh Foundation, $5 million to the Boy Scouts, $5 million to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, $5 million to the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, $5 million to Pittsburgh Symphony, $5 million to the Heinz History Center, $5 million to Chatham University, $5 million to the town of Greenville, Pennsylvania, and $2.5 million to the town of Conneaut Lake.

Fundraising Secrets

It is true that no campaign, charity, or non-profit organization can survive without fundraising. Fundraising is the lifeblood of your effort. Without money, you can't get your message out, do charitable work or even win elections.

Volunteer organizations are always in need of committed individuals and resourceful solutions. With so many nonprofit groups competing for the same few dollars, your group can benefit from the counsel of Sunset Coupon Books fundraising. Whether it’s a bake sale, ball club or anything in between.

Start planning your fundraiser at least 1 month in advance. Select your fundraiser early to assure ample time to execute it successfully. Schedule fundraisers to avoid competing with other groups. Order fundraising materials early to avoid rushed shipments, delays and to avoid sold out merchandise.

Stay focused on 2-3 great fundraisers per year instead unlimited, ongoing fundraisers. Kids and parents will both participate more if they know this is the only fundraiser for the season. If they think another fundraiser will come along any day, they will toss the current fundraiser to the side and wait for the next one. Two or three strong fundraisers will yield more funds than several poor ones.

Delegate to lighten the load. Assign jobs to each volunteer. Communicate before during and after the sale. The more volunteers you have, the easier, smoother and more successful your fundraiser will be.

Send home a letter of information to each parent explaining the fundraiser. Spread the word to generate enthusiasm. Get everyone involved. If you can get each person to participate in some way then the goal is that much easier to achieve. Make a list of potential buyers – family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and acquaintances. Let everyone know why you are fundraising.

In a startup nonprofit, the founding team is responsible for setting an example. This team should be the first to donate to the organization so that others will follow their lead. The amount doesn’t matter; full team participation matters more.

If your group needs more help with successful fundraising please call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 to find out what we can do to help you..

Fundraising Roadblocks

No matter how large or how small your group or non-profit is you will run into various roadblocks as your try to raise funds.

Have you ever been told by a prospective donor or buyer, “All charities are scams!” ?  - If so, what was your reaction?  Did you write off the person as a lost cause?  Did you make a negative or argumentative response?

If you want to see if you can open this door even just a crack you could start by a conditional agreement.  “Yes, I know it must seem that way.  There sure a lot of frauds and scams that try to pass themselves off as a legitimate charity.  Especially now after this recent tragedy.”  It doesn’t matter when this happens there is always a recent tragedy.

The response from your subject is the important key to whether you have the door open a crack or response was just ignored.  If the contact has no response you a pretty much stuck. If this meeting is in person or by phone doesn’t matter.

If the subject responds with, “I sure didn’t expect you to agree with me” or anything else that is at all openly responsive will tell you that the subject might be open to hearing your story and your story better be a good one.

You could even follow-up with, “I’m sorry, Have you, a friend or family member been the victim of a scam?”  Be ready to listen while the person relates their story.  Your interest or suggestion may open the door even further.

You can always respond, “Decent people all over the area are helping us with… Yes, your story goes here.  Ask the person what information they would like about your group so they can understand what work you are doing or what cause you are supporting.

Keep in mind that people give to people rather than just a photo or brochure.  This interaction needs to be between two people rather than a “pitch”.  It also never be a sermon or the preaching at the person.

You need to lead the person towards your goal rather than think that shame will be the key to a donation.

You've read this article, now take the next step. Call 1-800-627-6340 for free advice and Sunset Coupons fundraising ideas.

The key to fundraising is taking action and always making an effort to move forward.

Top Philanthropic Donors: James and Cathy Justice

James C. Justice II and his wife Cathy Justice have donated $35 million dollars to two charities.

Mr. Justice is the founder of the James C. Justice Companies, in Lake City, S.C., which own resorts and coal-mining operations.

Mr. Justice, and his wife, Cathy, pledged $25 million to the Boy Scouts of America to create the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, a 10,600 acre park in West Virginia. The organization did not disclose a payment schedule.

Mr. Justice also pledged $10 million over 10 years to Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the entrepreneurial arm of the Cleveland Clinic. The donation will be evenly split to establish a chair in medical innovation and to carry out programs to foster creative thought and idea exchange in medical innovation.

James c. Justice, II was born April 27, 1951 to James Conley Justice and Edna Ruth Perry Justice. He attended Raleigh County Schools, graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1969, attended Greenbrier Military Academy as a post graduate, University of Tennessee and received his BS and MBA Degrees from Marshall University in Huntington, WV.

Jim married his wife Cathy in 1976 in Beckley. Cathy is the daughter of Leigh and Ruth Comer and is a graduate of Marshall University with BA Degree in Secondary Education.

In a written statement announcing the Cleveland Clinic gift, Mr. Justice said, “Just like a farmer invests in the land so the crops will grow, we are investing in innovations which will lead to health-care initiatives that will benefit thousands, possibly millions, of people. Cleveland Clinic is the leader in this field and unparalleled in their dedication to solving problems, saving lives, and creating economic opportunity. The potential here is beyond imagination.”

Tips To Increase Fundraising Results

Planning on selling fundraising products and looking for some sales tips? These ideas will help improve the results of any fundraisers that involve selling. Use these quick tips in your next school fundraiser or youth sports team candy sale.

Publicize Early and Often
Promotion before and during the sale is the key to successful fundraising. So in addition to the parent running the sale, identify a volunteer to act as the head cheerleader or spokesperson. Create a theme for your fundraisers (like “Exceed Your Goals”) and a slogan (like “Dollars For Dolls”)

Before and during the sale, emphasize the reason behind it. If you don’t, the public won’t feel compelled to take part.  Send letters home, talk to parents at parents night. Tell people what you use the money for; this is why you need money.

Promote the Product as a Gift
To get customers to buy more, emphasize a sale item as a potential gift. Offer a product that not only would you use, but that you would be more than happy to give it to somebody as a gift. Now you have the chance they will buy twice as much.  People tend to buy more of something as gifts than they would buy for themselves.

Personalize the Product

Ask your fundraising company about the possibility of putting your own stamp on the product. This might be a slogan about the reason for the fundraiser, such as “Help us buy playground equipment,” or it might be a photo of the school. Holding a contest to choose the winning message or image can help pump up the excitement. It engages the student sellers and gets the parents and teachers involved.  Sunset Coupon Books can come with your Groups name on them.

Rethink Your Sales Approach and Sales Territory
Don’t underestimate the power of young sellers. Parents will take an order form to work and it just sits there; there’s not an immediate call to action.  It’s not nearly as effective as if the parent’s child came after school and walked around and asked people if they’d like to buy something. My dad was a postman, and when I was a kid I went to the post office and asked for sales from the mail carriers and the guys working the counter. They felt an obligation to support me. Consider expanding your sales territory to places likes churches and the courthouse. Call on different leaders; go to the mayor’s office.

If you are looking for a fast and easy way to build up local offline cash flow please take a look at the help you can get from Sunset Coupon Books.  They offer 100% match of dollars to your organizations efforts.  Give us a call and find out more. 800-627-6340

Good Fundraising Qualities

The ongoing economic conditions mean that many charities and groups are looking to fundraisers to help them achieve their goals. Lots of nonprofits that have never had a formal fundraising team before are looking to hold fundraisers.  There shouldn’t be too much emphasis on lots of previous fundraising experience as some of the best fundraisers come from non-fundraising backgrounds.

Effective fundraising requires foresight and planning. Look for someone who knows how to prioritize and distinguish key funding opportunities from haphazard ones.

Share the excitement and joy you feel for your mission. Be sure to stop and celebrate the gifts with all and the impact they will make. Bring compassion and high energy to every conversation whether it is in person, on the phone, in an e-mail, letters, or on site at events.

Are you looking for a fast, profitable and ready to go fundraising solution?  Can we suggest Sunset Coupon Books.

Make Your Group A Cause Celeb

First what is a Cause Celeb?  A cause célèbre is an issue or incident arousing widespread interest, outside campaigning and heated public debate. The term was particularly used in connection with celebrated legal cases. It is a French phrase in common English use, but is hardly used in modern French. In today's arena of media attention and Social media it has come to be related to any news item that quickly gains attention online or in the popular media. Webster’s Dictionary has the definition is; a notorious person, thing, incident, or episode.  The phrase originated with the 37-volume compilation of famous legal cases, Nouvelles Causes Célèbres, published in 1763.

Your group and their cause needs to be part of the awareness of you community.  That community can be a large metropolitan area or as small as your church or school.

The formula for your group's cause celeb should be that "good deeds + celebrity" (think popularity) will equal an improved rate of sales or donations that your group can use to achieve your goals.

Keep in mind that your group will never be known beyond their own best boast.  If you don’t think highly of what your group is doing neither will anyone else.  Everyone from student athletes to a local news person can become the spokesperson for your Cause Celeb.  You not only want to march to the beat of a different drum you want to beat your drum loudly!

Whenever possible you want to tie what your are doing or raising funds for to a news event, holiday or local hot topic.  It can be an anniversary of your group, city or state.  Nearly everyday can be related to an event that is famous or even notorious.

Here is a website that list many holidays. http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/index.htm

The other thing you could do is, if you’re interested in seeing what celebrities care about and are concerned about, remember that there is a pretty large and impressive group of well-known people and you can often make a donation to their causes. The third element of it is you could become a celebrity for your own cause and create what we call a badge, which is a little kind of card that adds you or a picture of you and links to organizations that you’re supporting, and you could talk about why it means something to you.

No matter what you use to promote, group or event, remember to tell a good story.  Stories have long been used to pass down history, combat boredom and teach important lessons. Kids can easily become enchanted with the characters and plot of a well-told story. Learning how to tell a good story can help you reinforce lessons and encourage active listening skills. When storytellers tap into their creativity, stories achieve new life with each retelling. Engaging in the art of storytelling can be a pleasant escape for both you and your listeners.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Herman Ostrow

Herman Ostrow, a USC trustee, alumnus and lifelong Southern Californian, donated $35 million to USC for its School of Dentistry.

The gift was announced Jan. 20 2010 by USC President Steven B. Sample at a gala unveiling ceremony at the Norris Dental Science Center on the University Park campus.

In recognition of the gift – believed to be the largest individual donation to a dental school in the United States – the school has been renamed the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, Sample announced.

The gift will be pivotal in raising the school to the next level of effectiveness, by providing resources to renovate and improve clinical facilities, to bring in new faculty members, to continue to support dental and craniofacial research, to enhance service programs in downtown Los Angeles and to attract and retain the best students, according to Avishai Sadan, dean of the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC.

Ostrow, who earned his DDS from USC in 1945, has a history of hard work and entrepreneurship. He spent 17 years practicing dentistry, including both private practice and service in the Army Dental Corps, before delving into Los Angeles construction and the real estate market. He also enjoys growing rare fruit trees.

The Ostrow School of Dentistry’s traditional curricula include the Doctor of Dental Surgery program, the Baccalaureate in Dental Hygiene program, and several postdoctoral programs in dental specialties. Other available degrees include combined DDS/MBA and DDS/M.S. programs, gerontology programs, master’s and Ph.D. opportunities in the craniofacial biology program and the Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists.

Fundraising Safety Tips

Most group and team fundraisers utilize product sales to raise funds. It is crucial that any fundraising project that involves children have the highest level of safety and supervision by both the parents and the fundraising group in place. The following fundraising safety tips are the minimum that your group should have in place.

Register your fundraiser with your group’s administration. Any fundraiser that is run by any group affiliated with a school or organization should have permission from the proper authority so they are aware of what is going on. The administration or proper person should be notified of all fundraising activity.

Rule number one should always be no door-to-door sales by children. While this used to be common practice for many fundraisers, times have changed. This is not a safe practice and is strongly discouraged. If you would like to offer fundraising products to neighbors, parents should be the ones to make the contact. Phone calls, emails and social networking are the preferred choice for fundraising solicitation. If possible, please limit the contact to family, friends and known associates.

Parental involvement in fundraising safety is a must. From phone calls, to events, to social networking, parents will need to be involved every step of the way. At no point should children take the lead in fundraising solicitation. They can be part of the process, but direct supervision by the parents is essential. This goes for any fundraising activity online (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.), as well.

Never allow children to carry collected money unless accompanied by a responsible adult. Parents should be the ones to handle any funds collected and directly pass this along to the fundraising group’s administrator in charge of the fundraiser. We discourage cash transactions and prefer that checks be the main form of payment, but we understand that this is not practical (direct sales of tangible items or Sunset Coupon Books) in every case. Please keep all collected funds in a secure location and pass along the funds to your group as soon as possible.

Proper communication between the fundraising organizer and the fundraising participants is essential. All fundraising logistics, especially the safety tips listed here must be properly communicated. It is the fundraising organizer's responsibility to convey the rules and guidelines of the fundraiser properly. There should be a clear step-by-step guideline of the fundraiser distributed to the parents. Parent letters, emails, phone calls and daily announcements help reinforce the safety regulations of the fundraiser. Do not rely on children to pass along the information to the parents. Always communicate directly with parents on all matters regarding fundraisers.

We understand the importance of raising money for your group or non-profit, but always fundraise in the safest way possible. Good luck!

Do Spring Storms Have Fundraising Possibilities?

The old saying about Opportunity Knocking can be related to Spring Clean-up fundraisers. How you might ask? Well if your group has some very strong young people in its ranks you could follow-up by offering to do storm damage or yard clean up in return for a donation to your group.

I know that some church groups provide these services free of charge to members of their congregation or local area.

Even when you chose to do the clean-up as a community relation benefit your group will have good future relations with those you help out in a time of need.  This kind of good PR goes beyond just those on the receiving end.  You can also document the clean-up efforts and include it in a scrapbook showing how the community benefits from helping out your group in the future.

When your group is doing storm damage clean-up or for that matter any community service project call the local newspapers, TV and radio stations and let them know what and where your group is working on.  If it is slow news day you just might find that the press is glad to cover your efforts and give you an even larger reward.  Nothing is better for your group than good public relations.

Many local communities have had to cut back on maintenance personnel so follow a storm it may be weeks before local parks can be cleaned up.  If your group steps-up and fills in this vital need you are not only going to benefit by having a better looking neighborhood you can end up with TV PR for your group and your local community is more likely to support a group they have heard of or that can show they have been paying it forward.

Any time that the work force is made up from children you want to make sure they are properly supervised to keep them safe.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Violet Lenore Patton

Ms. Patton is a retired assistant professor of art education at Miami University of Ohio, in Oxford, who invested in stock in American Home Products, which later became the pharmaceuticals giant Wyeth.

Ms. Patton pledged two gifts totaling $41.3 million to Ohio University, in Athens, last year. She pledged $28 million for the Patton College of Education and Human Services and directed the university to use the money for building renovations and programs for students and faculty.

She also pledged $13.3 million for the College of Fine Arts to establish a new arts-education center, which the university has named the Violet L. Patton Center for Arts Education. The center will develop programs to improve arts education in the area’s local public schools and to increase the number of local children who graduate from colleges and universities.

Ms. Patton graduated from Ohio University in 1938 with a bachelor’s degree in education and went on to teach art in mostly small, impoverished elementary schools, eventually developing and writing an arts-education curriculum that was widely used throughout Ohio.

While teaching at a school in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Ms. Patton taught a young student named Neil Armstrong, who would later become the first man to walk on the moon.

Ms. Patton also wrote textbooks and collaborated with her mother, Gladys Patton, to write a series of etiquette books for children called Little Dot Learns. In 1945 she joined the faculty of Miami University of Ohio, where she taught for the rest of her career.

Patton grew up in Ohio, where her father was a school superintendent and her mother wrote textbooks, Lipman said. Patton co-wrote etiquette books with her mother, worked in New York and devoted her life to teaching, he said.

What Is In It For Me?

It is said that to support a fundraising cause you must care about that cause.  For small local groups that raise funds for a school organization or church group that would seem to limit their audience to participants, friends and families.  If you are raising funds for a sports team you should have the same limited pool of funds.

In reality that isn’t true.  If you can take the time to really enlighten your donors (buyers) about the needs and goals of your group they can will become involved enough to make a purchase or donation.

If you are selling items of value you can make sure the offer is one that will appeal to your buyer from the “helpful” standpoint as well as the “a value for them.”

In the use of Sunset Coupon Books think of stopping a person on the street and asking would you trade me $10 dollars if I give you $400 dollars back in value?  Ten dollars for four hundreds dollars food, entertainment and services.  Most people might ask what is the catch?

Local merchants are willing to offer that great a deal to get folks to try their businesses.  Simple, straight-forward business deal!

Could your fundraising group make use of our coupon books?

Smiles Lead To Better Fundraising Results

Jerold Panas is a frequent speaker at fundraising conferences and seminars, Dr. Panas is also a regular contributor to professional journals and a noted author. Among his many books, he is author of the all-time best selling book, Mega Gifts, now in its ninth printing. Dr. Panas preaches that smiling right before picking up the phone to make a donor appointment. Then keep smiling. When tried most users report that the technique increases their success rate.

There is another benefit to smiles – they are contagious. You know it’s true. If you smile broadly at someone, they are more likely to smile back than not. When you enter a donor’s office or home and you are smiling, a full warm genuine smile, the donor is already glad to see you.

It turns out that happiness is contagious as well. Happy people spread happiness in others. So now your donor or buyer is not only glad to see you, but is feeling down right happy to see you.

You should consider the use of Sunset Coupon Books as your key fundraising efforts for the coming spring and summer season.

Success Is In The Question

The fact is, people don’t just “donate” to your cause, they need to be “sold” on your cause. Don’t be shy about “merchandising you’re your group’s goal.”

It seems like nearly 100% of the time that I walk toward a store that has a fundraising group outside the “question” is always Do you want to buy… or would you like to donate to….

The problem with that question is that it can always be answered with a simple and quick “No!”  With little information to make a buying decision your customer will simply say no.

Ask yourself is that what your group does when on location and trying to raise funds?

Be positive when approaching a potential donor.  Here is an example of an approach.

With a big smile say, “We have these great Coupon Books with more than $400 in savings at local merchants for just $10.  Would you like one or two?  That is being both Informative and Positive.

If you aren’t selling Sunset Coupon Books you can substitute any product into that statement and it will work much better than asking “Do you want to buy…”

If possible take it a step farther and give them a reason that you need to make the sale.

With a big smile say, “We have these great Coupon Books with more than $400 in savings at local merchants for just $10.  We are using the money to buy new uniforms. Would you like one or two?

Do you want to be even bolder?  With a big smile say, “We have these great Coupon Books with more than $400 in savings at local merchants for only $10.  We are using the money to buy new uniforms.  The Coupons are very popular, most people are buying at least two coupon books.

Your fundraising success is in how you make your sales approach.  Inform your customer of your group’s need and then sell them on what you are selling.  Never ask a yes or no question.  At least 50% of the time you won’t like their answer.

If you are looking for a high value fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how positive we are that Sunset Coupons can help your group reach its goal.
