David Hamilton Koch  born May 3, 1940 is an American businessman, philanthropist, political activist, and chemical engineer. He is a major patron of the arts and had contributed to several charities, including Lincoln Center, Sloan Kettering, New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the American Museum of Natural History's David H. Koch Dinosaur Wing. The New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, home of the New York City Opera and New York City Ballet was renamed the David H. Koch Theater in 2008 following a gift of 100 million dollars for the renovation of the theater. Condé Nast Portfolio described him as "one of the most generous but low-key philanthropists in America". He and his brother Charles have also donated to political advocacy groups, including Americans for Prosperity.

Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History (Washington) has received a pledge of $35-million from David H. Koch to construct a new dinosaur exhibition hall. Mr. Koch is executive vice president of Koch Industries, an oil and gas refinery in Wichita, Kansas that was founded by his father, Fred C. Koch.

Since 2000, David H. Koch Charitable Foundation have pledged or contributed more than $750 million to further cancer research, enhance medical centers, support educational institutions, sustain arts and cultural institutions, and conduct public policy studies.  Since 2006, the Chronicle of Philanthropy has listed Koch as one of the world's top 50 philanthropists.

Koch was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Mary and Fred C. Koch, a chemical engineer. He is one of four siblings. He attended the Deerfield Academy prep school in Massachusetts, graduating in 1959. He went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), earning both a bachelor's (1962) and a master's degree (1963) in chemical engineering. He is a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

Koch played basketball at MIT, averaging 21 points per game at MIT over three years, a school record. He also held the single-game scoring record of 41 points from 1962 until 2009 when it was eclipsed by Jimmy Bartolotta.  The basics of his fortune are related to the oil industry.

In 1970, David joined Koch Industries. Nine years later, he would become the president of Koch Engineering.

Learn To Use and Avoid “No”

While this relates directly to fundraising, it also applies to many other aspects of what you do everyday.  Most people feel the word “No!” is a direct rejection of themselves.

In reality what “No” usually means is “No, Not right now.”  If you ask a person to help you in a current or future fundraising project you can expect one of two responses.  The responses will ultimately be either “Yes” or “No.”

If the answer is “yes” that is the start of working with that person on your project.  If the answer is “no” remember it probably means  “No, Not right now”.  Perhaps your project’s timing conflicts with a vacation or family event.  It may be that they are just burned out on doing events at the present time.

The old saying is “If want something done find a busy person to do it.”  While there is a lot of truth to that saying, there are times when those same types of people know that they need to take a break from their hectic schedule.  If you ask them for help at that time they will have to say “No” and sometimes may even say “No, Not right now”, and offer a time in the future when they will be able to say, “Yes.”

Keep in mind that the real art to avoiding the word “No” is how you ask the question.  The way to ask for a opening in a schedule is to do just that.  I was wondering, when do you have a few days free (or open) in your schedule?

One strategy is to never ask a question that can be answered by a “No.”  There is a great sales story that illustrates this; Elmer Wheeler, a famous sales consultant, was hired to help a pharmacy improve their profits.  At the time it was common for pharmacies to serve food.  One of the most popular items served was malted milkshakes.  Wheeler observed that several customers were ordering malted milkshakes with an egg in it.  Even though this was extra the pharmacy wasn't charging any more.

Wheeler advised the pharmacy not only that they charge extra "per egg", but servers were trained to ask customers whether they wanted "one egg or two".  Here's the genius in this:

1. Most customers did not order eggs, but when they did it ate into profits

2. Wheelers question caused the customers to make a choice and they almost always picked one (ordering no eggs was an option, just not stated)

Sell At A Sponsor’s Location

One very effective tip for selling Sunset Coupon Books is to get permission to sell at a Participating Merchants location.  In this case and every case you need to obtain permission from a location in-order to sell at that location.

If you aren’t familiar with Sunset Coupons you can easily raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit using Sunset Coupon Books.

Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days?

Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.

Coupon Books sell for only $10 each. You pay $5 for them so you make $5 for yourself for a full 100% profit.

Local coupon book editions are available in Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson, Arizona and Salt Lake City, Utah.

You can pick one of the local merchants and arrange to sell at the location.  You can mention the merchant in your offer to passer-bys.  You can even let them know that they can buy two books.  One to use now and then have one more to use later.  This works very well with people who frequent the merchant and like their products or services.  So make sure to offer everyone two Sunset Coupon Books.

This work very well when the location serves food and a weekend day before, during and after lunch makes a great time to do your offers.

If you want to try out Sunset Coupon Books for your organization’s next fundraising event.  Give us a call at 800-627-6340 and see what we can do for your group.

Memorial Day

TAPS
Day is done...
Gone the sun
From the lake...
From the hills...
From the sky.
All is well...
Safely rest
God is nigh.

Fading light....
Dims the sight
And a star....
Gems the sky....
Gleaming bright
From afar....
Drawing nigh
Falls the night.

Why Sunset Coupons Works Year Round

When you are doing fundraising in Arizona you have to keep the weather in mind.  The southwest U.S. has some of the hottest weather in the country.  It can affect what can be sold during a fundraiser as well as the effect it can have on those doing the fundraising.

The overall problem is that fundraising can’t stop just because the temperature is over 100  and could well be pushing 115.

For six to seven months of the year you simply can’t drag around a thirty pound book of chocolate.  Yes, you can use a large cooler and ad ice to keep the chocolate cool prior to the sale but how are the people going to get the bars home before they melt.  We aren’t trying to single out chocalte but it is one item that is affected by our hot weather.

Any product that is heavy just adds to the heat stress of being outdoors and working during the hot months in Arizona.  We aren’t just saying summer here.  In 2012 the first 100 plus day occurred in April and that temperature can run into October.  That is seven months where at very light and non-perishable item has a distinct advantage.

Sunset Coupon Books have that distinct advantage.  The coupon books are a high value sale and since they are local coupons people have no trouble buying them to use later.

Here are some guidelines to be out and active in the Arizona heat.

Stay Hydrated,  Drink plenty of water, not sugary drinks, but water.

Stay in the shade when possible.

Use a good quality sun block

Plan your fundraising activities for the early morning or evening hours (after sunset)

Wear weather protective clothing.  Wear a hat and protect your skin by covering as much as possible.

Visit our web site http://sunsetcoupons.com for more information about how your group can use Sunset Coupon Books in your next fundraising activity.

Philanthropic Giants Bill and Melinda Gates

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty.

In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people, especially those with the fewest resources have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and Co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.

With an asset trust endowment of $33.5 billion the total grant commitments since foundation inception are $26.19 billion.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supports grantees in all 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Internationally, the foundation supports work in more than 100 countries.

The grantmaking process has four stages, each of which leads to the next in an ongoing feedback loop. Throughout this process, the foundation is continually learning by asking questions and reviewing progress.

Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett set overarching grantmaking priorities, then the three programs devise strategies to meet specific goals in these areas.

To create these strategies, the foundation has developed a set of processes that help them decide how to spend their time, effort, and money to accomplish the goals for as many people as possible. Together, these processes form a continuous cycle with four stages: develop strategy, make grants, measure progress, and adjust strategy.

If you wish to see more information about the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation you can visit their web site at; http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Pages/home.aspx

How Does Social Media Work in Fundraising?

Today the use of Social Media as part of marketing is a well accepted fact of life.  Social Media web sites give you a forum or place to tell your story and bring up-to-date information about the current events that your charity or group is involved in.

Social Media helps promote a charity in two ways, loyal donors can create small networks and provide testimonials for the group and volunteers can share information with each other through social networks.

More than half of all fundraisers believe social networking sites have a place in the fundraising world, studies have shown. And one in five non-profits has generated donations from a social media site.

What's the appeal of social networking? There are practically no barriers to entry, for starters.

Facebook does not charge a fee, nor does Twitter. For example, a Facebook account to can be used to promote special events and donation drives.  If someone is going to offer marketing opportunities at no cost, why not accept the offer?

Another reason: it's where the donors are hanging out. Nearly 7 in 10 of American adults visit online blogs, communities or social networks, and one-third of those surveyed say they visit these sites to read up on the latest happenings in their area.

The promise of this emerging technology is simple. Small businesses and charities can dominate if they embrace social networking as part of their marketing strategy.

Social Media is not like a light switch that you can flip and be instantly gratified with donations from people you don’t have a relationship with.  You can open a Facebook page one day and expect donations tomorrow.  You have to spend time, in fact many months building those early relationships.  As you build the number of people will grow faster as the number increases.  That is just the nature of social media.  It is a place of relationship building.

Your donations will come from groups of people that can relate to your cause.  If it is a cause that is nationwide then that can be the response.  If your cause is a local sports team then your focus is about how those children and the community will have a positive impact from the community and their donations.

If you are looking for a much faster and easy way to build up local cash flow please take a look at the help you can get from Sunset Coupon Books.  They offer 100% match of dollars to your organizations efforts.  Give us a call and find out more. 800-627-6340

Fundraising Is Selling

People who are new to fundraising are often surprised that raising funds is selling.  To be good at fundraising means learning to be good at selling.  The best of the basic books on selling is one by Zig Ziglar called Selling 101: What Every Successful Sales Professional Needs to Know.

Here in a short, compact and concise format is the basics of how to persuade more people more effectively, more ethically, and more often. Ziglar draws from his fundamental selling experiences and shows that while the fundamentals of selling may remain constant, sales people must continue learning, living, and looking: learning from the past without living there; living in the present by seizing each vital moment of every single day; and looking to the future with hope, optimism, and education. His tips will not only keep your clients happy and add to your income, but will also teach you ideas and principles that will, most importantly, add to the quality of your life. Content drawn from Ziglar on Selling.

Zig Ziglar, is one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the country. He delivers his message of humor, hope, and enthusiasm to audiences throughout the world. He is chairman of the Zig Ziglar Corporation, whose mission is to equip people to more fully utilize their physical, mental, and spiritual resources. His client list includes thousands of small and mid-sized businesses, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, churches, and non-profit associations. He is the author of many bestselling books, including Confessions of a Grieving Christian, Something to Smile About, Over the Top, and See You at the Top, which has sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide.

'Selling 101' is an easy to read and understand introduction to sales technique for those new to selling, or a quick review for experienced sales people who need a refresher. The book can be read quickly, but to get the most out of it return to each section and determine how you can apply the principles there to improve your skills.

There are chapters on overcoming call reluctance, need analysis, closing, dealing with angry clients, making the most of your time and more. You are sure to pick up at least a few good ideas. Part motivation, part how-to, 'Selling 101' may be just what you need to improve your sales results a little or a lot.

Having a great background in selling will be a major boost in your fundraising efforts.  This book, Selling 101: What Every Successful Sales Professional Needs to Know, is the best place to start that education.

Know Your Charity

When giving to support a local organization it is very easy to feeling and know that your donation or purchase goes to support a local sports team, church or other charitable organization.  With other non-local charities you want to make sure that your donation is in good hands.

Charities have an obligation to provide detailed information to interested donors. Never give to a charity you know nothing about. Request written literature and a copy of the charity’s latest annual report. This should include a list of the board of directors, a mission statement and the most recent available audited financial statements with accompanying notes.

If a charity does not provide you with the information you request, you may want to think twice about giving to it. Honest charities typically encourage your interest and respond to your questions.

Find Out Where Your Dollars Go

Ask how much of your donation goes for general administration and fundraising expenses and how much is left for the program services you want to support. The www.charitywatch.org Charity Rating Guide recommends that in most cases 60% or more of your charitable donation should go to program services. In our view, 60% or greater is reasonable for most charities. The remaining percentage, ideally less than 40%, is spent on fundraising and general administration. Most highly efficient charities are able to spend 75% or more on programs. Keep in mind that newer groups and those that are working on less popular issues may find it necessary to spend a greater percentage on fundraising and administrative costs than well-established, popular groups.

Attempt to seek more information about charities that identify as “public education” large portions of their direct mail and telemarketing expenses. This may be done in some cases to disguise high fundraising costs.
It is difficult to find out the real percentage of donor dollars spent on program services due to the inconsistent quality of charitable self-reporting. But you can ask the charity’s representative for specific information, such as how many individuals were served annually or what were the major program accomplishments during the past year.

In 1976, Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer, Inc. with Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer. The following year, he introduced his Apple II personal computer, featuring a central processing unit, a keyboard, color graphics, and a floppy disk drive. The Apple II was integral in launching the personal computer industry.

The Most Important Part Of Fundraising

What is the “Most Important Part Of Fundraising”?  Some would argue that getting the money into your charity is the most important part.  There can be no argument that the bottom line of fundraising is the donation itself.  After all the is the goal of fundraising.  The money!

If we can take a moment and step to the side and look at all fundraising we will see one other long term goal.  That goal is the reputation of the organization.  The better it is, the easier it is to actually raise the money. So is reputation the most important part of fundraising?

If possible take the next few minutes and think about a simple word… Follow-up.  Follow-up with each and every person you come in contact with is crucial to fundraising.  Is it easier to go to someone you know or a complete stranger for your next fundraiser?  Once you meet with someone your follow-up with that person is the cement that will bind your reputation with that one person.  If you follow-up with each person you will find more and more friends or at least contacts for the future.

Collect the name and contact information of everyone you meet.  Yes, this will never happen anywhere near 100%.  But the more you simply ask for that contact information the more often you will get it.  The more often you follow-up a donation with a sincere “Thank You” the more often you will get that second or third donation.

Even when you are selling something tangible you can ask if that person would allow you to contact with you next special, offer or request.  No you won’t get 100% yeses.  But every time you ask you will have the opportunity of a yes.

That is immediate follow-up • Purchase • Thank You • Follow-up • Simple
Are you doing that simple step?

Let Sunset Coupons help you with your next fundraiser.

Using Email For Fundraising

In order to do fundraising at some point you must ask another person to make a donation or purchase for you charity, non-profit or organization.

You will find that many people suggest that using the internet and sending emails out to people is a great way to find those people who are willing to make a donation to your cause.  A well crafted donation request email is the second step in this process.

The very first step is to have a list of email addresses to send your donation letter to.  You can not just send an email out to a group of people.  Why?  Nothing annoys a reader of email is “SPAM” or an unsolicited commercial email.  The Can Spam Act of 2003 clearly prohibits this practice and the act has teeth in the form of hefty fines for those who Spam others.

So just sending an email is both illegal and will anger most of the recipients.  Angry people don’t make donations.  So the first step of building your list is a slow and methodical process.

Yes, you can buy a list from another source.  But you still run the risk of the illegal and angry readers as they won’t have a relationship with your charity.

You want to slowly build a relationship by having people respond to your story on your website where you request that they join and follow your newsletters.  That list built over time with people who are already familiar with your cause and will recognize and open your fundraising letter when it comes.

You want to tell a good story about your group and how you use donations in helping others.  Only after you have told your story do you ask for their donations.  That is the correct way to use emails to raise funds.

If you are looking for a faster way to raise funds give us a call at Sunset Coupons and let us tell you how we can help your group.

Start Fundraising at an Early Age

What follows is a short list of fundraising ideas that are great place for children to start learning about fundraising.  These are ideas that children from about eight and up can get involved in through a local sports team or school functions.

Ice Cream Social. We all know the very famous and old saying, "I scream. You scream. We all scream for ice cream!" Here in the southwest it is already time to start thinking of great ways to cool off. Kids can dish out the ice cream and the toppings and help with the cleanup from this frosty and delicious fundraising event.

Car Washes are great spring and summer time fundraisers. A bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a hose is all that kids need to host a charity car wash. Have the kids make signs detailing which charity they are doing the car wash for, in order to maximize donations.  Many stores will give up part of their parking lots and even supply the water for your fundraiser.  Just ask!

Hold a Bake Sale at your church or school. Gather your group together to make and sell baked goods. If possible ask your church for permission to sell after your services.

Mix a hot summer day, some lemons, sugar and ice, what do you have? A Lemonade Stand. They are a great way for kids to raise money for your group or charity. Selling can teach your group the basics of small business as well. They can learn about the laws of supply and demand, they can even determine profit margins, these are life lessons that will stay with them forever.

Believe it or not, both boys and girls love Face Painting. A face painting booth is a fun and easy fundraising idea for older youth. Set-up a booth at a local festival or carnival and be sure have good signs that can tell your charity's needs and goals.

Go ahead and think green! Think Recycling! Kids can raise money and be environmentally responsible at the same time. Children can collect cans, newspapers or cardboard at home, as well as set up recycling bins at their parents’ workplaces, and bring them to their local recycler.

If you need help with your first or fiftieth fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 to learn the easy and fun way to raise your needed dollar amount.

Why Be a Volunteer?

It's a pretty common mistake to think of volunteering as just something nice that people can do. Sure, it may make them feel great about helping, but what impact does it really have?

Getting things done

Volunteers have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of communities worldwide. Think of all the ways that volunteers make a difference in day-to-day life:

Volunteers deliver critical services - from serving as volunteer fire fighters or participating in search and rescue, to delivering meals to homebound seniors or homeless youth, to manning the phone lines at domestic violence and sexual assault centers.

Volunteers help to keep our neighborhoods, streets, parks, rivers, green spaces, and water clean and safe for everyone.

Volunteers tutor, teach, mentor, coach, and support young people with everything from math homework to dealing with personal crises to football and soccer tourneys.

Volunteers walk dogs, pet cats, clean cages, help with adoptions and feedings, and contribute veterinary expertise to organizations like animal shelters and wildlife rehabilitation centers.

Volunteers educate the public on health and safety; doctors and nurses donate time and medical knowledge to free clinics and natural/civil disaster areas worldwide.

Volunteers take tickets at film centers and performing arts events, lead tours at museums and historical societies, and ensure that arts and cultural festivals—from small-scale gatherings to massive multi-stage concerts - run smoothly.

Volunteers build houses and schools, dig wells, and repair infrastructure around the globe.

You get the idea…

By the numbers

Another way to measure the impact of volunteers is to take a look at statistics like hours served and the economic value of volunteer time.

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone.

The economic value of all this volunteering? $162 billion U.S. dollars.

Volunteers are critical partners of and participants in societies throughout the world. Whether actively giving their time through a formal or ad hoc organizations, or taking part in what is sometimes called "informal volunteering" where citizens voluntarily participate in community activities or provide personal care for family, friends, neighbors, or even strangers as part of accepted cultural norms of giving and reciprocity.

The impact of no volunteers

Finally, here's one more way to visualize the impact of volunteers. Try this little exercise: imagine if one day, all volunteers simply didn't show up.

What would our cities, towns, state/provincial parks, schools, places of worship, and libraries look like? What basic needs would go unmet? What opportunities to grow, learn, and thrive as a society would be lost? The truth is you likely cross paths with a volunteer at least once if not several times a day, no matter where you are in the world.

Fundraising Volunteer Recognition

Recognition is one of the most important parts of working with volunteers. There are many ways to recognize your volunteerss. Here are a few suggestions.

Hold potlucks at the office and invite volunteers to make them feel like part of the team. Ask the volunteers to bring a big appetite.

Send your volunteers a favor such as a paper fan with a note, "Thank your for all of the FAN-tastic help".

Display a tree with the volunteers names and photos in the lobby or another prominet place.

If your organization is large enough and can afford a little more do something like rent a theather for an afternoon at the movies. Start by giving out awards and special recognitions.
Treat your volunteers as part of the staff .Distribute copies of appropriate memos, include volunteers in meetings and trainings when you can, and make sure each is informed of new policies, procedures, or activities in the organization.

Write a brief "Thank You" card telling them how much you appreciated their help on a project they were working on.

Many of our volunteers have full time jobs and busy careers or are students. Send letters of recognition to their places of work either directly to their superior or through the Human Resources office or school administrators.

Recognition doesn't have to be expensive. It does have to be sincere.

Promote Your Fundraiser with Social Media

When we think of fundraisers we think about soliciting our friends, family and co-workers to raise funds through walk-a-thons, cake raffles and similar homespun.

There are social media sites that will help you do just that.  Here are the Top Three.

ChipIn: The easy way to collect money

ChipIn is the most popular widget used by fundraisers today for distributed fundraising. It’s a simple tool you can place on your website or on a Facebook profile page. It amounts to a donate button that comes with a thermometer that measures the campaign’s progress. If you don’t have a site, you can subscribe to ChipIn and they’ll host your campaign for free. Subscribing to ChipIn is free, but you’ll need to set up a PayPal account to process donations. Every monetary contribution made through ChipIn is charged at a rate beginning at 2.5 percent of the amount donated.

GlobalGiving: Donate to grassroots projects

GlobalGiving is an online marketplace for philanthropy where anyone can post an idea and get it funded. The nonprofit connects donors with community-based projects that need support in the United States and abroad. You select the projects you want to support, make a tax-deductible contribution and get regular progress updates — so you can see your impact. The organization sustains itself with a 15 percent optional fee you can add so that 100 percent of your donation goes directly to the project.

Change.org: Empowering people to take action

ChangingThePresent: Make the world a better place ChangingThePresent is a nonprofit that connects you with more than 1,500 meaningful if nontraditional charitable gifts — for instance, “stop global warming for $20″ or “adopt a tiger for $40.” Browse by cause or nonprofit to find a gift for friends or for your own charitable giving. The service also encourages donors to make simple donations of any amount through their home pages. A premium profile costs $100 per year. Donation processing fee: 3 percent of each donation plus 30 cents.

You can always use Sunset Coupon Books to ad hundreds more to you next fundraising campaign.  Give us a call and find out how easy it can be.
