Top Philanthropic Donors: Edward Evans

On December 20, 2010, Yale President Levin announced that Yale had received a US $50 million gift from Yale alumnus Edward P. Evans, which will be recognized with the naming of the new main building as Edward P. Evans Hall. Ground was broken for the new campus on April 26, 2011.

Mr. Evans, who was 68 when he died December 31, gave $50 million to Yale University, in New Haven, Conn., several weeks before his death. The money will be used for a new building in the university’s School of Management, which Yale plans to name for Mr. Evans. He graduated from the university in 1964.

Edward P. (Ned) Evans was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 31, 1942 to Thomas Mellon Evans and Elizabeth Park Evans Kase. He is survived by two brothers Thomas M. Evans, Jr. and Robert S. Evans, his niece, Ashley Evans and his nephews Jonathan Evans, Thomas M. Evans, III and Mark Johnson Evans.

Ned graduated from Yale University in 1964 and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1967. He had a long and successful business career beginning in 1968, holding executive positions with a number of family businesses. In 1980, Ned became Chairman and CEO of MacMillian, Inc.

Beginning in 1988, he became involved with personal business interests and investments including breeding and racing thoroughbred horses. Ned was also known as a generous philanthropist. He formed the Edward P. Evans Foundation and contributed to a number of charitable organizations in various fields throughout the United States.

Mr. Evans' greatest joy was racing thoroughbred horses and breeding thoroughbreds at his farm in Casanova, Virginia known as Spring Hill Farm. He bred over 100 stakes winners and as of his death was the 4th leading breeder and 7th leading owner in North America. Ned was consistently named as one of the Top 10 breeders in North America. His horse Quality Road was one of the favorites for the 2009 Kentucky Derby and won or placed in 12 out of 13 starts. Quality Road was injured before the 2009 Derby and was unable to compete in any of the Triple Crown races in that year. The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association named Ned the Virginia Breeder of the Year nine times, most recently in 2009, and the National Breeder of the Year in 2009.

How Many In The Jar:  Fill a jar with candy, coins, nails, screws or any other item and have people pay to guess how many it took to fill it! If the jar isn't filled with something yummy (like candy) to win - be sure to have a prize to help entice people to play.

Youth Sports Fundraising Basics

Youth sports fundraising is a great way to earn extra money for extra-curricular activities while teaching children about teamwork, working hard to accomplish a goal, and serving the local community. Children are wonderful fundraising participants. They are enthusiastic about almost everything they do.

They learn many new things every day and they are genuinely interested in the activities offered through their school and team activities. Fundraising for youth sports teams should be positioned as a fun event rather than a task, and as something children can enjoy working on with their friends, teammates, coaches and parents.

Whether your youth sports fundraiser will help raise money for team uniforms, training tools and equipment, weekend training camps, or travel expenses for tournaments, youth sports fundraisers do not need to be difficult. We have done some research to bring you interesting ideas to help you create the best fundraising strategies for youth sports.

In youth sports fundraising, it is important to select the right products to sell. The products should have mass appeal, be relevant to the sport and time of year, and be sold at an above average price point so you can make good profit margins. Consider choosing items that are top of mind during the time of year you are hosting your fundraiser. If you are part of a softball or baseball team and are conducting a fundraiser at the end of the summer for a tournament, consider selling "back-to-school" items, backpacks, lunch-boxes, pencils, etc. Similarly, if the fundraiser is for a Fall sport, consider selling holiday items such as wrapping paper, holiday cards, candles and tree lights, etc. Lastly, it's important that your fundraising product has a high profit margin. Sunset Coupon Books have large profit margins, and are a relatively easy item to sell.

Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days?

Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.

Honing Your Skills for Effective Fundraising

Let's face it. Many people find it difficult to ask friends, neighbors, and strangers for money. But if you don't ask, you won't receive. This chapter will help hone your asking skills, whether it's verbally or in writing, providing strategies to help you put your best foot forward. All it takes is effort, a passion for your cause, and respect for potential contributors.

Offer A Reward For Donations

For a $50 donation, you get a T-shirt; for a $100 donation, you'll receive an umbrella; and for $200, you'll get a tote bag. This is typical of the fundraising efforts of PBS and similar organizations. You donate money and get something in return.

Giving people an additional incentive can spur contributions. Having a sponsor who can provide you with T-shirts or some other giveaway item makes this added incentive work. It also raises public awareness about your organization. Bumper stickers, T-shirts, caps, mugs, and tote bags featuring the name of your organization are all very visible items. One fundraising group gave a jacket to everyone who put in three hours of volunteer time at its annual conference. This created a professional, united look among the volunteer staff and served to promote the organization.

One of the simplest things to do is give recognition. It costs little, if anything, to acknowledge somebody's generosity and it makes people feel good when you do so. Consider mentioning volunteers and donors in the monthly or quarterly newsletter.

Just because you came up with the brilliant fundraising idea doesn't put you in charge — or does it? Every fundraising project needs a leader to take charge. The leadership role will require a significant time commitment, and the leader will need the support of the members of the organization to get things moving.

If, on the other hand you are looking for a high dollar return, simple and easy fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and let us show you how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Jan and Marica Vilcek

Dr. Vilcek, a professor of microbiology at New York University School of Medicine, who co-developed Remicade, an anti-inflammatory drug. Ms. Vilcek is a former associate curator and head of the accessions and catalog department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.

Dr. Vilcek, 77, and his wife, Marica, 74, pledged $21-million to New York University Langone Medical Center. Of the total, $10-million will go toward a new residence hall for students, $10-million will endow full-tuition scholarships, and $1-million will be added to the Jan T. Vilcek Endowed Fellowship Fund, which the couple established five years ago. Dr. Vilcek said he hopes the donation will “enable talented young medical students and researchers to have the same opportunities that I did at NYU Langone.” He added that he and his wife hope to improve the competitiveness of the medical school and attract the best-qualified students.

While they have an eye toward present and future students, the couple’s reasons for giving to the medical center are rooted in their past. They came to the United States 46 years ago as refugees from what was then communist Czechoslovakia with no money and few contacts.

“We earned our small fortune not by speculating in the financial markets but by doing scientific research in a university setting,” said Dr. Vilcek.

He said the medical center gave him the opportunity to be a part of its family, and it in turn became his intellectual home. He and his wife now want to make it possible for others to succeed.

The Vilceks have paid $8.3-million toward the pledge and plan to pay the remainder over the next three years. The $21-million commitment is not the Vilceks’ first gift to the institution or even their largest. In 2005 the couple pledged $105-million to the medical school for education and research programs in the department of microbiology.

Dr. and Ms. Vilcek last year gave $1-million to their Vilcek Foundation, in New York, which they established in 2000. The foundation awards grants and prizes with a focus on calling attention to the contributions of immigrants to science and the arts in the United States. The couple also gave $700,000 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a total of more than $390,000 to other nonprofits, including the Bellevue Literary Press, in New York, several scientific research funds at New York University, and other organizations.

Don't forget the possibility of business supporters who can sponsor specific spaces on the board.  Most fundraising tournaments are conducted on a set time limit basis.

Learn the Secrets of Fundraising

Fundraising is a massive topic. It can be overwhelming for the beginner. So here are some tips on the basics of fundraising.

Fundraising is the process of soliciting and gathering contributions by requesting donations from individuals or businesses. Basic fundraising means quick, practical information you can start using immediately to generate more money for your nonprofit, School, Sports Team, Youth Group or Church.

Do you have a thank you plan in place. Who is responsible for generating and sending thank you letters from your group? How much turnaround time is there before they get mailed? Do they sit on the someone’s desk for days or weeks waiting for a signature or personal note? Does anyone make thank you calls or send thank you emails?

One of the biggest indicators of whether or not a donor will make a subsequent gift is whether or not they are thanked properly and sufficiently, and have been informed how their money was used. Are you keeping or losing your donors based on how well you thank them?

Is there a follow-up plan after each of your events? Fundraising events can be wonderful fundraisers in and of themselves, but they are also fantastic cultivation events that serve to connect prospective donors to your group and their needs.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with prospects after your event, when they are feeling good about your organization, to get them engaged and ask them for a recurring donation.

Events are the most time intensive and expensive type of fundraising, so why do you have them? Events are an opportunity to showcase your organization to your current supporters and the community as a whole,

Make a lot of money from companies and people who might not otherwise give, Build your database, and Raise unrestricted, operating dollars, which are difficult to raise in other ways.

Fundraising the Quick & Easy Way with sales of Sunset Coupon Books!

Girl Scouts Are Selling Cookies Again

Like the Girl Scouts your group may need to raise money to support their activities.  Most School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit raise funds so they can continue their missions.

Selling items is a good way to raise money.  According to the Girl Scouts of the United States of America website, approximately 70% of the proceeds stays in the local Girl Scout council to provide a portion of the resources needed to support Girl Scouting in that area, including a portion that goes directly to the troop/group selling the cookies. The balance goes directly to the baker to pay for the cookies.

Based on selling nearly 200 million boxes of cookies per year that means that the total gross sales equals $800 million dollars.

Since the idea of selling cookies seems to be taken at Sunset Coupons we suggest you consider selling Sunset Coupon Books for your group to raise funds.

Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days?

Top Philanthropic Donors: Albert Viragh

Mr. Viragh, who was 62 when he died in 2003, bequeathed $20 million dollars to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore, to establish a center for pancreatic-cancer research and patient care. The research center will be named for Mr. Viragh.

The donor was a patient at the cancer center and died from the disease. He made smaller donations to the medical institution before his death, according to executors of his estate.

Mr. Viragh ranked No. 32 on the 2009 Philanthropy 50 list for a $28 million bequest he left that year to Chaminade College Preparatory School, in St. Louis, and while his executors would not disclose how much more in bequests they intend to award, they confirmed they plan to give away more in the coming years.

Mr. Viragh made sure his gift to Spring Hill College was one that keeps on giving.

Albert P. “Skip” Viragh ’64 loved Spring Hill College. He was also a gifted entrepreneur, became an expert in investment management, and founded the Rydex Fund Group, one of the nation’s most successful mutual fund families in the industry. Viragh also became the greatest benefactor in the college’s history and established an athletic scholarship fund in 2000. He died in 2003 of pancreatic cancer.

And now, a gift from his estate of $2.5 million to that scholarship fund for men’s and women’s basketball that bears his name will further strengthen those programs. The gift includes $500,000 for immediately funded scholarships and $2 million for the scholarship endowment.

Viragh enrolled at Spring Hill College on a basketball scholarship, played for the Badgers for three years, and as his close friends recall with a smile, survived his college accounting classes before graduating in 1964.

Getting A Donation From Today’s Marketplace

Today donors are less accessible. In the past, fundraisers could build relationships with the gatekeeper to their target people, knowing that these relationships would eventually get them in to see the decision-maker. Electronic devices have since replaced most gatekeepers and you can’t build a relationship with a voice mail system. Other technological innovations such as e-mail, fax, cellular phones, digital pagers, and the Internet have also given donors the freedom to execute their functions away from their desks or homes. While this is good in one sense, it also means that potential donors are less likely to pick up the telephone when you call.

Many prospects are reluctant to pick up the telephone anyway. With the rapid economic expansion in recent years, more fundraisers are offering more solutions than ever before. Consequently, decision-makers are being inundated with a barrage of callers, who are all competing for the same thing, a donation from the prospect’s budget, but even more importantly, a slice of their time and attention.

Most prospects already know the fundraising tricks, things like calling after hours to avoid the gatekeeper, or leaving voice-mail messages that say so-and-so told me to call. They also know about the Ben Franklin Close, Alternate Choice, and Feel-Felt-Found. That’s why so many fundraisers have become frustrated with traditional fundraising methods.

Teaching fundraisers to be just like everyone else puts them at a disadvantage. When a fundraiser is perceived “the same” as everyone else, then they are only average, by definition, and their chances of getting a donation are significantly diminished. Donors usually don’t "give" to an “average” fundraiser.

Rather than donations consider selling Sunset Coupon Books at local events and store locations.  Give your prospects a better “deal.”

Fundraising Is Selling

Selling is as much an art as it is a skill. It should never be about getting others to do something they don’t want to or to buy something they don’t need. At its best, selling is always the highest form of communications. It’s about achieving the perfect equivalent between what you have to offer and what someone else wants or needs.  Sometimes, even when they don’t even know it.

People who work on behalf of nonprofits like to think of themselves as doing something for the common good. When asked to define "What is a nonprofit?”  Many of them seem to feel that selling isn’t compatible with that mission.

That seems to speak more about people who are trying to sell things with out understanding how selling should work.

The last thing in the world that supporters of nonprofits like to think they are is salespeople; they consider themselves a cut above schnooks selling shoes or used cars.  When asking a group of non-profit staff “What is fundraising?”, no one ever answers “sales.” Instead predictably, the answers have a mushy quality equal to the definition of a nonprofit. Fundraising is the “ability to raise capital for an entity,” “stewardship, relationship-building in order to raise funds for an agency,” “an effort to generate funds for a good cause.”

Fundraising is not about “the ask,” but about “the listen.” Remember the famous song lyric, “fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” Give Consideration to your customers before you chew their ears off about your cause. Too many do-gooder fundraisers have an attitude.” They think that all they have to do is blurt out the basics of their case and their audience will just open their wallets. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Do your homework: Find out about people you approach. Take an interest in them. You’ll be amazed at how interested they’ll become in you.

Or is it that selling is fundraising?

Fundraising In The Winter

With blizzard Nemo fresh in our minds and another cold snap here in the Southwest we know that you are still needing to raise funds for your group.

Is raising funds in the Southwest different in the winter?

Winter fundraising ideas can be influenced by seasonal considerations such as weather conditions and the holiday season. For example, you can raise money for your group or organization by sponsoring an extreme outdoor adventure or by selling things that are related to the cold weather or the holidays.

Hold a Polar Bear Dip. If you are near a body of water, consider sponsoring a polar bear dip, in which participants jump into ice-cold water. Charge an entry fee to participate in your polar bear dip fundraiser. You also can ask participants to collect pledges for each second or minute that they remain in the water. Allow only adults to participate in the polar bear dip, and ask participants to sign a waiver form that releases your organization of liability related to their dip in the water. Serve hot refreshments such as hot chocolate, tea, coffee, soup and chili, and provide towels and warming space in a heated tent or trailer, if possible.

Use Sunset Coupon Books.  Easily raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit.

Coupon Books sell for only $10 each. You pay $5 for them so you make $5 for yourself for a full 100% profit.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Ming Hsieh

Ming Hsieh, born in 1955, is a billionaire American entrepreneur and philanthropist and the founder of Cogent Systems in 1990. According to Forbes magazine, his estimated net worth exceeds $1.6 billion, ranking him the 198th richest person in America and 562nd among The World's Richest People In 2006.

Born to Baoyan and Sun Hsieh, Ming Hsieh's family originated in Canton, he was raised in Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning province in Northeast China. His family was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution as a part of China's upper middle class having ties with the old national government moved to Taiwan; as a result, his family was forced to move in 1966 to a small village near Panjin. At age 10, Hsieh's formal education stopped for the next ten years. During that period, Hsieh learned the trade of electrical engineering from his formally trained father as they built a crude power system for the village they were assigned to and did odd repair work.

Hsieh's uncle, P.Y. Hsieh, had left China and earned a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1952 before working for TRW. Knowing of this, Hsieh decided to follow his uncle and, after two years at the South China Institute of Technology in Guangzhou and with an inheritance from his grandparents in Taiwan, he transferred to USC's engineering program at age 24. Hsieh earned his Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering from USC in 1983 and MSEE in 1984. His parents wanted him to continue and earn a Ph.D., but Hsieh decided to first work a few years.

A naturalized U.S. citizen, Hsieh is married with two children. He lives in Beverly Hills and has additional houses in Pasadena, San Francisco, and San Marino, California.

Hsieh began work as a circuit designer for International Rectifier. After two and a half years, he decided to start his own business. He founded Cogent Systems Inc. which offered fully automated, high-speed biometric fingerprint system. The company began receiving numerous government contracts and now includes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Prisons, FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police amongst its customers.

In October 2006, Hsieh donated $35 million to USC's Viterbi School of Engineering's Department of Electrical Engineering, 100 years after the department and school's founding. In honor of his donation, the department was renamed the USC Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering. In October 2010, Hsieh donated $50 million to USC for cancer research. He is on the USC Board of Trustees.

Five Best Fundraising Ideas

Sell Your Own Cookbooks
Have your group’s members offer their best family recipes for a cookbook.  Fundraising Cookbooks is a wonderful fundraising idea! Your cookbook fundraising program begins by collecting recipes. Favorite recipes are collected by people who love to see their names and recipes in print!

White Elephant Sale
Many organizations find that white elephant sales are a great way to generate instant cash. Many organizations hold these types of events once or twice each year, and find them to be very profitable. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn just how easy it is to plan and put on successful white elephant fundraising sales.

Pump Gas For Profits

Ask a local gas station to let you pump customers gas and wash their windshields. You can either ask for an unspecified fundraising donation or a set amount. Since most stations are now self service you will be offering the customers a welcome option. It's a win-win situation. It doesn't cost the station a cent and their customers get premium service. You have no upfront cost.  The gas stations already have the windshield cleaner, squeegees and paper towels. You just provide warm bodies and elbow grease.

Donation Jar
Ask your local karaoke bar to host a benefit night and best singer contest. Invite all of your friends; Place a donation jar on the stage and at the bar and suggest the audience donate for each performer from your group and then a final donation for the winner of the contest.

Hold A Marathon Event

Does your group want to raise community awareness and get a good dose of press coverage and positive public relations.

It is easy to do if your group creates and holds some type of marathon event.  If your group is musically related group you could arrange to perform for 48 hours uninterrupted over a weekend at a local venue or shopping center that has stores that are open 24 hours straight.  Rather than asking a person or small group to perform the event alone, you can rotate through two or four hour shifts.

Doing a marathon event with rotating participants won’t get your group into the Guinness World Records it can bring you great local press coverage.

With a sports team you can perform stick and / or ball tricks for the extended time period.  A high school ROTC group could use their drill team to perform demonstrations.

For other groups where performance or demonstration doesn’t work you could consider doing a bowl-a-thon or some other type of event.

Part of the community aspect can be that donors could be given a choice to donate to your group and / or another local charity.  If you are using this event to sell items for your group you could also give all or part of your profit to a local charity.

The aspect of your group doing a donation as part of your fundraising is what will be the key to getting local press coverage.

If your group is local to the Phoenix metro area, Tucson Arizona or Salt Lake City you sales can be Sunset Coupon Books that are custom made just for your group.

Fundraising Magic

No, we aren’t talking about doing a Magic Show and raising funds from the ticket sales.  What we are talking about is the magic that makes “things” fundraising or otherwise work.

What is the Magic that makes “things” work?  It is very simple! The magic of making things happen is the “DOING”.  Yes, that is right it is the “actual doing” of the “thing.”

The magic is the doing, rather than planning and the preparation.

What most groups are looking for is the Magic Bullet:  that one thing that would (without too much work) raise every penny they needed.  And, minus the parenthetical wish, I actually had the answer.  I really do know a magic bullet for fundraising.  Ready?

Do something.  Do anything.  But do it consistently.  If it isn’t working, don’t stop doing it, assess why it isn’t working.  What needs to be changed?  Then change that.  If it is working, ask what else can we do and then (yes, you’ve got it) do that also.

Too often fundraising is something that no one actually gets to.  It is discussed.  Classes are taken; consultants hired; meetings with other organizations set up so that you can learn their secrets.  But getting to it?

As someone said in a slightly different context:  they are planning to plan to create a development plan that will somehow raise money.

Some people spend a better part of their lifetime planning for that once in a lifetime vacation.  They read and study all about the destination.  They get brochures and dream about what it will be like going to that country, meeting the people, eating the food and sightseeing.  But, then somehow they never seem to get around to the actual doing… the actual vacation.

Are you treating your fundraising in the same way?  Are you getting ready and never actually doing the fundraising?

If you are looking for a fast and easy way to build up local offline cash flow for your group?  Please take a look at the help you can get from Sunset Coupon Books.  They offer 100% match of dollars to your organizations efforts.  Give us a call and find out more. 800-627-6340
