Top Philanthropic Donors: David and Patricia Atkinson

Mr. Atkinson retired in 1992 as a partner with Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd, a Philadelphia money-management firm. He now runs Atkinson & Company, the couple’s private-investment business.

Mr. Atkinson, 72, and his wife, Patricia pledged $80-million to Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y., to support the David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future, a research center focused on the challenges facing energy, the environment, and economic development around the world.

On October 28, 2010, Cornell celebrated an extraordinary new commitment from David and his wife, Patricia Atkinson, by renaming the Center in the Atkinsons' honor (video). The David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future (ACSF) will increase Cornell's visibility in sustainability research and allow the university to leverage important partnerships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and outside groups. It will draw together the vast resources of a university that is uniquely positioned to address some of the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing the world today.

David Atkinson is the founder of Atkinson & Company in Princeton, New Jersey. He retired in 1992 as general partner of Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd LLP, a Philadelphia-based investment counseling firm. He held a number of previous positions in the financial industry, including vice president in the research department of Morgan Stanley, cofounder of Franklin Capital Investors, and manager of the Scudder Development Fund at Scudder, Stevens & Clark. David earned an MBA in 1963 from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy for two years, after graduating with a BS from Cornell.

Mr. Atkinson has been an important adviser to Cornell University. As a member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Advisory Council, he chaired the Environmental Sustainability and Development Task Force that broadened Cornell's efforts in sustainability. A life member of the Cornell University Council, he was recently named a Presidential Councillor, the highest honor the university bestows.

Patricia Atkinson is a graduate of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She is active in the Princeton (New Jersey) Hospital Auxiliary, serving as membership chair for ten years and treasurer for two years, and a longtime volunteer for Princeton Meals on Wheels.

Cool Weather Fundraisers In Arizona

There's no reason to stop doing good when it gets a bit cooler outside. In some parts of the country everyone is tempted to curl up at home and hibernate, but it's about as good a time as any to have a winter party with a purpose.  In Arizona we don’t suffer from extreme cold weather.

Arizona winter fundraisers gives friends and family an excuse to get out of the house and be an active part of their community. Even here people tend to focus on family during the winter months due to the holidays.

Here are some fun and very easy winter fundraising ideas and winter fundraiser themes:

Bonfires:  Host an outdoor bonfire in a neighbor's yard or community area. Serve warm drinks like hot chocolate, tea, and coffee, and make s'mores. Have each guest bring blankets, coats, warm sweaters, shoes and non-perishable foods. Donate the goods to a local homeless shelter or food shelter.

Flagstaff or Pinetop Ski Weekend: Instead of running a marathon or walking a long distance, organize a charitable cross-country event at our state ski areas or laps at a local stating rink. This can run just like any other fundraiser: everyone signs up, raises a certain amount of money, and rallies on the big day to do the distance. Serve refreshments at the end and make sure to take lots of pictures of this fun winter fundraiser theme.

Have a Winter Carnival: Make it an old-fashioned night out, complete with carnival games, dunk-tanks, freshly popped popcorn, dancing, and bingo. This can be hosted at a church, a community center or a local YMCA. Charge for entry and games. All the money collected can be used to make a sizeable donation to a worthy cause, even your own group.

Sunset Coupon Books: Easily raise money for your School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit. Sunset Coupon Books contain hundreds of dollars in savings from local merchants. The savings enjoyed from using just one or two coupons will pay for the book. And who doesn’t need to save money these days? Sunset Coupon Books are small enough to fit in a pocket or purse yet contain over 40 family-friendly coupons such as 2 for 1 Meals, and Attractions like Bowling, Mini-Golf, Skating, etc; a combined value of over $400 in savings.  Coupon Books sell for only $10 each. You pay $5 for them so you make $5 for yourself for a full 100% profit. Local coupon book editions are available in Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson and Salt Lake City.

There really is no shortage of winter fundraiser ideas when you use your imagination and collaborate with friends. Winter parties with a purpose give everyone a little something to look forward to and keep the good spirit going well past the holidays.

Use Your Website To Raise Funds

Does your group, School, Sports Team, Youth Group, Church or Non-profit have a website?  Are you using it to raise funds for your organization?  I don’t mean to announce the next time you have a fundraising programming.  But everyday what are you doing on your website to raise funds?

Do you have a side-bar with advertisements from local merchants helping them to get community recognition by helping your group.  And from this “ad” your group gets needed funds.  Your side-bar could feature three or four different (non-competing) merchants that would benefit from new customers and the recognition that would get.  The support they give to local charities is vital for their image as well as the support to the charity or sports group.

Of course you can use your website to announce the next time and place your group will be selling the ever popular Sunset Coupon Books.  They contain over $400 dollars in savings and specials that your donors and buyers can get for just $10 dollars.  If you sell just one hundred books your group will raise $500.00 for much needed programs or equipment.

You can even have people join your group via an email newsletter so you can keep everyone up-to-date on your groups activities and projects.

You can set-up a direct donation button using PayPal to make it easy for donors to make contributions to your group.  Copy and paste a Donate Button on a website, blog, or email. Donations go directly into your PayPal account for easy tracking. You can even accept credit card payments.  Use the power of your social network to get the word out. Create apps for Facebook and the Web quickly and easily to spread the word and attract more donations. You can even customize the design to fit your cause.

How It Works

Select the type of  button you want to use.
Sign up or upgrade to a PayPal Premier Account.
Paste the button onto your website or blog, or paste the link in an email.

Donors simply click on the button or link and choose to pay with a credit card, debit card, or PayPal account. All donations go directly into your PayPal account for easy tracking.

He is the founder and CEO of hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management LP.  In December 2007 his funds owned a 10% stake in Target Corporation, valued at $4.2 billion through the purchase of stock and derivatives. His funds now own a 7.8% stake. In December 2010, his funds held a 38% stake in Borders Group and on December 6, 2010, Ackman indicated he would finance a buyout of Barnes & Noble for $900,000,000. He most recently won a shareholder proxy battle for Canadian Pacific Railway. Ackman is known to occasionally hire people outside of non-traditional finance backgrounds, for instance, his professionals have included a former fly fishing guide, a former tennis pro and "a man whom he met in a cab.

He married Karen Ann Herskovitz, a landscape architect, on July 10, 1994. She is a trustee of Human Rights Watch and serves on the board of Friends of the High Line, a charity that transformed a stretch of an old elevated railroad line in New York City into a public park.

Ackman is a signatory of The Giving Pledge committing himself to give away at least 50% of his wealth to charitable causes.

Mr. Ackman and his wife, Karen, gave $58-million to the Pershing Square Foundation in 2010, which they created in 2006 to support education, human rights, social entrepreneurship, and other causes. They contributed an additional $1.3-million to 50 other nonprofits.

In 2010 the Pershing Square Foundation announced its largest pledge to date: $25-million to help improve the public-school system in Newark, N.J. Mr. Ackman has known the city’s mayor, Cory Booker, for years and has supported other city-improvement efforts such as cleaning up its parks. When Mr. Booker was seeking additional donors to match a $100-million pledge the Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg was making to Newark’s school system, the Ackmans’ foundation came forward with the biggest commitment yet, next to Mr. Zuckerberg’s.

Time To Be Truly Thankful

As we gather with friends and family, take leave from jobs, worship freely and enjoy abundant food, take time this week to be truly thankful, remembering this simple but powerful advice from Eckhart von Hochheim, otherwise known as Meister Eckhart, a German theologian, philosopher and mystic:  "If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, 'thank you,' that would suffice."

Did you know that if you make $50,000 per year, you're not quite a Bill Gates or a Warren Buffet, but you are doing better than 99 percent of the 6.7 billion people in the world?

As Americans, we gather every year to celebrate Thanksgiving. But what do we really know about the holiday? Was it a yearly tradition from the time the Pligrims and Indians had their infamous feast? Well, as it is taught, Thanksgiving was a celebration between colonists of Plymouth Plantation and members of the Wampanoag Indian tribe. Although history does dictate this happened, Thanksgiving was officially declared a holiday on Oct. 3, 1789, by then President George Washington. These are the opening statements of George Washington.

“Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor; and whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Please take this time of year to support the charity of your choice and share with those in need.  You will find that through your donations you will be enriched.

All of us at Sunset Coupons would like to take this time to say a heartfelt “Thank You.”

If, on the other hand you are looking for a high dollar return, simple and easy fundraiser call Sunset Coupons at 800-627-6340 and see how we can help your group reach its goals, time after time and year after year.

Fundraising During The Holidays

The holiday season is upon us already and it is true that holidays mean that people are more focused on getting ready for this season.  In addition we still have many people needing assistance from the effects of hurricane Sandy.  Though the general concept of fundraising has taken a beating in the aftermath of the recession, there are ways in which money can be raised for any good cause.

Fundraising through selling products or services is a great idea. Christmas tree fundraisers and wrapping paper fundraisers can be very successful owing to the fact that people want to make use of these products.

Selecting a date for your fundraising event or a week for a fundraising drive can be a frustrating task. You'll need to factor in numerous variables, including holidays and the availability of key players in the organization. In addition, you will need to consider what time will draw the most attendees or attract the most donors or buyers.

As the focus turns to the holidays you want to make sure that your fundraising offerings have as good a value as possible and if they can be used as gifts so much the better.

We would like you to consider the special value of Sunset Coupon Books.

Your cost is just $5 for them so you make $5 for your group for a full 100% profit.

Local coupon book editions are available in Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson and Salt Lake City.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Lonnie Poole and Carol Johnson Poole

Mr. Poole founded Waste Industries USA, a waste-collection and disposal company in Raleigh, NC, in 1970.

Mr. Poole earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University in 1959 and is vice chairman of the Board of Directors at the university’s foundation and a member of North Carolina State University’s endowment board.

Mr. Poole and his wife, Carol, have pledged $40 million to North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, with the majority of the money, $37 million, earmarked for the College of Management, which will be named in Mr. Poole’s honor.

The gift will support the development of new programs, faculty research, student scholarships and fellowships, and other college activities.

Of the rest of the gift, $2.5 million will go to the Carol Johnson Poole Club House on the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, to which the couple donated $3 million in 2007, and $500,000 will go for an endowed fund in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Through his board roles, Mr. Poole became increasingly aware that College of Management, established in 1992, faced trouble attracting financial support. He And he knew that government support was likely to dwindle given how much the bad economy had eroded state and federal budgets. The gift is the largest ever received by the university, say the institution’s officials. Thus far, the couple has provided $11 million of the pledge, with the rest to be paid over 10 years.

Mr. and Ms. Poole have also given $75,000 to the WakeMed Foundation, the fund-raising arm of WakeMed Health & Hospitals, for a wing at its children’s hospital in Raleigh; $51,000 to the Boy Scouts of America, in Irving, Tex.; and $25,000 to St. David’s School, in Raleigh.

Mr. Poole is a member of the Southern Region Board of the Boy Scouts of America and serves on the executive council for both the organization’s Occoneechee Council and Central Florida Council.

Fundraising Is Selling… Go For No

In a world inundated with sales Gurus who claim that you ultimate goal is only the yes answer, there is a sales book that recommends just the opposite, focusing on how increasing your failure rate can greatly accelerate your movement toward ultimate success. The book, Go for No! chronicles four days in the life of fictional character Eric Bratton, a call reluctant copier salesman who wakes up one morning to find himself in a strange house with no idea of how he got there. But this house doesn't belong to just anyone! It belongs to him... a wildly successful, ten years in the future version of the person he could become if he learns to overcome his self-limiting beliefs and overcome his fear of failure.

Through the dialogue of the two main characters the authors have fashioned an entertaining story to present the key concepts essential to sales success. Readers learn... What it takes to outperform 92% of the world s salespeople... That failing and failure are two very different things... Why it s important to celebrate success and failure...  How to get past failures quickly and move on...

That the most empowering word in the world is not yes... it s NO! Written to be intentionally short and to the point, Go for No! is a quick, fun read with valuable lessons that can change the way you think, sell, and live!

What follows are three comments about the book from the Amazon.com website.

"Read this book! Put down whatever you're reading right now, take a deep breath, and read this book. It won't take long, but it might change your life. Having read dozens of books on leadership, sales, motivation, and business, I have become some what picky about the books I read and particularly about the books I recommend. I recommend this one without reservation."

"If you're serious about living your definition of success add Go for No! to your personal library. The ideas shared are terrific and the unique story format that the book is written in makes it a delight to read."

"If you want to take this road less traveled, get a hold of Go for No! Read it, practice it and master it. In time you'll create so much success that people will start asking you how you got so lucky and why everything you do seems to be a success. If they only knew."

You have read this article, now take the next step. Call 1-800-627-6340 where we always say yes and for free advice and Sunset Coupons fundraising ideas.

The key to fundraising is taking action and always making an effort to move forward.

Measuring Fundraisers’ Success

How do you measure the success of your next fundraisers?  Is it as simple as meeting your fundraisers’ dollar amount?  That is but one way.

Your answer to the question could alter your next fundraising campaign completely.

There are many ways to measure a fundraiser's success. What follows are some examples.:

The most obvious measure is clearly how much money you raised. That is, after all, the point of your fundraising efforts, isn't it?

Response rate. This is the measurement of what percentage of your recipients responded to any part of your fundraiser. You calculate it by dividing the total number of sales by the total number of attempts to make a sale.

Average sale amount. This measures the average gift amount you received per donor or purchaser.  How many bought more that one Sunset Coupon Book?

Cost per dollar raised. Fairly self explanatory, you need to know how much each dollar is costing you. As a general rule of thumb, you want to keep your organization's average overhead to under $0.20 per dollar.  What expenses did you have?  Can any be eliminated for your next fundraiser?  Consider all costs and reimbursements.

So, how do you measure your success? How successful are the different items sold or money raised by other methods.

Need help creating a successful fundraising campaign or interpreting the results you've already experienced?

So for your fast and effective fundraiser this fall take a strong look at the Sunset Coupon Book program for your school group.

At Sunset Coupons we want to help you make your next fundraiser easier and more successful.  Give us a call at 602-279-0404 to find out how we can help your group.

Using Fundraising Press Releases

Before your group holds a fundraising project doing a local press release should increase the number of people who attend your event.  Your press release should have two goals.  The first goal is to inform the public about your event.  The second and perhaps the most important is to arouse interest in the press to write additional stories about your event.

Your intent should not be to write a complete story for the media to just copy and plop into their newspaper, on their blog or use on TV.

Your news release needs to contain just enough information to convince the reporter, blogger, editor or producer to call and get the rest of the information. The goal is to entice and persuade them to do a feature story. But you have to make it easy for the editor to do their job with a minimum investment in time and energy. You do this by giving them the information and facts they need to do their job.

You should be able to do this using between 400 to 600 hundred words.  If your press release is too long it may not be read.

You must paint a word picture that makes it easy to see the end product.  You want to include the follow highlights.

The name of the Organization and Event
Who benefits and what the money be used for
When the event will be held
Fundraising Monetary Goal
Community leaders or organizations Involved
What’s special about your organization?
Why or What is the crisis or need
What can people do to help
Where the event will be held
Name and phone and email of contacts for more information
Website URL for more information

If possible include a photo from previous events.

Call all of your media outlets and ask who is the correct person to send your press release to.

As the co-founder and chairman of Qualcomm, Jacobs has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the field of education through generous donations and grants to several schools and organizations. His donations have gone mostly towards fellowships and scholarships for deserving students in the fields of engineering and computer science, as well as the arts, and are focused in the San Diego area. The San Diego Union Tribune in 2011 dubbed him the "Philanthropist in Chief".

Jacobs has pledged $120 million for the San Diego Symphony, a similar amount for the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego, $75 million for UCSD's future specialty hospital and $20 million to replace the central library in downtown San Diego. Also in 2005 the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse was named after Jacobs and his wife in honor of their philanthropic contributions towards the institution's development.

In August 2010, Irwin and Joan Jacobs joined the Giving Pledge, pledging to give away most of their fortune to philanthropy. The Giving Pledge consists of around 40 America billionaires who have agreed to pledge 50 percent or more of their wealth to philanthropic causes. As of 2010, 50 percent of Jacob's wealth would equal $600 million. As part of the pledge, the Jacobses will choose which charities they would like to donate at least 50 percent of their estate to.

Five More Fun Fundraising Ideas

1. Selling Kisses – We did this one a few years back, and it was a big hit. The team members’ favorite (or least favorite) coaches are persuaded to join in. Jars with each coaches name are placed in a prominent location at the sports field. Which ever coach has received the most money by a given date gets to select the coach to man the Kissing Both at the next event. This is a fun fundraiser that kids, parents and coaches will enjoy.

2. Singing Telegrams – This fun fundraiser idea is great for school or church choirs. Buyers select the song, recipient and any special message. Singers visit the recipient in their homes or businesses to sing the telegram. This one is great for Valentines Day.

3. Goofy Olympics – Pick fun and silly games for an “Olympics” day. Participants pay an entry fee per game or for the whole day. Prizes (donated) are given to winners of each contest or game. Combine this program with food booths for more fun and profits.

4. Pie and cake auctions – The cooks and the sweet lovers in your group will enjoy this fun fundraiser idea! Ask for donations of cakes and pies. Label each dessert with the name of the dessert and the cook. You might even want to include the recipe with the time. Ask your most humorous and charismatic person to be the auctioneer who can entertain the crowd and boost the auction prices.

5. Casino Night – Putting together a charity fundraising event like a Casino Night Fundraiser can be a lot of work unless you're well organized. Events like these often include live entertainment, a catered dinner, live and silent auctions, sponsorships, ticket sales, tax deductible donations, and a host of other details that require plenty of advance planning.

The plus side is that a Casino Night is a great excuse for adults to get all dressed up and have a fun time, so turnouts are impressive. There are lots of charitable groups who need to raise large amounts of operating funds and these events can do a good job.  Planning and lots of organization are the keys to making it work.

Of course you can save time and hassle buy using Sunset Coupon Books for your next fundraiser and make it more successful and a lot of fun at the same time.  Let us help you have fun and have your best fundraiser of all times.

Fundraising Following Elections

As the campaigns of the presidential election raps up for 2012 it is important to note that more than two billion dollars have been raised from corporations and individuals.  How does that affect non-profits, schools and other groups that need to raise money for their different causes?

Control of how money is raised was addressed in the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, also known as "McCain-Feingold", after its sponsors, is the most recent major federal law on campaign finance, which revised some of the legal limits on expenditures set in 1974, and prohibited unregulated contributions to national political parties. ‘Soft money’ also refers to funds spent by independent organizations that do not specifically advocate the election or defeat of candidates, and funds which are not contributed directly to candidate campaigns.

Much of that money has gone in to media buys to get their respective messages across.  Smaller amounts have gone into the purchase of printed materials and the rent of offices and to pay for travel expenses.

While it is much harder to find out what economic effect all of the congressional races and on down through all of the state and local offices that were campaigned for.  Countless millions were spent to fund these elections.

The money has gone back into the national and local economies.  So it is not as though the money has just vanished.  It should for some individuals and business been a boon to their income levels.

So you may want to consider certain targets for your fundraising efforts.  It might be that local news media and printers be considered as they may have been on the receiving end of these millions of dollars.

Always consider that if you are raising funds for a small school group there are targeted local coupon sales like Sunset Coupon Books that are a good vehicle for you to use in your fundraising efforts.

If your group is in the for Phoenix, Tempe / Mesa, Tucson or Salt Lake City area we are here to help you have a successful fundraiser following this years election cycle.

Top Philanthropic Donors: Eli and Edythe Broad

After creating shareholder wealth by providing vital home building and retirement savings services through the two Fortune 500 companies he created, KB Home and SunAmerica, Inc., Eli Broad and Edythe, his wife of 54 years, are now devoting their time, energy and resources to philanthropy.

As the child of immigrant parents, Eli Broad was instilled with the values of hard work, education and the dream that anything was possible. He and Edythe both attended Detroit Public Schools, and then he attended Michigan State University, graduating with a degree in accounting and becoming the youngest CPA in the state’s history.

While working for two years as an accountant, Eli Broad saw his homebuilding clients making much more than he was, and he and Edythe’s cousin’s husband decided they, too, could build houses. Eli Broad and Donald Kaufman founded Kaufman and Broad with the simple idea that if they built houses without basements (the widespread use of gas heating rendered basements to store coal unnecessary), they could offer homes with mortgage payments that were lower than the rent for a two-bedroom apartment. The first weekend in 1956, they priced their houses at $13,740. They sold out that same weekend and were in business.

The Broads had created a family foundation in the 1960s as a way to support their charitable interests and causes. But with their financial success from the sale of SunAmerica, the Broads focused their charitable giving in a new style of investing that was more akin to their business acumen: venture philanthropy. An entrepreneur at heart, Eli Broad has applied his same spirit of creating new enterprises to the family’s approach to philanthropy.

Today, The Broad Foundations, which include The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and The Broad Art Foundation, have assets of $2.1 billion. Their mission is to advance entrepreneurship for the public good in education, science and the arts.

In 2010, Broad backed "The Giving Pledge," an initiative started by fellow billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates for rich Americans to give at least half of their wealth to charity. Eli and Edythe Broad committed to give 75 percent of their wealth to philanthropy during or after their lifetimes.
