Fundraising Pet Peeves

In a recent survey, one of the pet-peeves was when organizations do not take the time to write thoughtful text for their online fundraising pages.  This can translate to in person fundraising efforts as well.

When you are selling items or asking for donations do you take for granted that your prospective donor know about your organization and it’s needs?  Don’t be surprised by the question, many groups don’t know about the need to tell a “Good Story” when asking for donations or selling products to support their group.

Other pet-peeves were related to personal pages and the content is all about an event. Now, this was slightly less because the organization has taken time to create text for the page. Why does it irk readers when the personal page is all about the event? That’s easy, because individuals are here to donate.

They are looking for reasons to donate.  Attending an event is not about the event itself it should be about the reason for the event.  What does the event support.  What good will it do in and for the community.  Remember it is not about the event it is about telling a “Good Story” about the benefits that will come from the amount of money raised at the event.

Telling a “good story” about your groups needs is much like writing a good book.  Many authors talk about having a “hook” to grab the reader and keep the reader interested.

Does your group tell a “good story”?  Do you have a hook to keep you donors interested?  Does your story entice people who have never thought about giving to do just that, give to your group.  If not, why not?

One of the questions asked was “why didn’t you personalizing your page?” One answer in particular stood out to “other,” which was an open-ended question. An overwhelming number of people wrote “It looked good - didn’t see a need to change it.” Wow, I wasn’t expecting that answer.
