Start Fundraising at an Early Age

What follows is a short list of fundraising ideas that are great place for children to start learning about fundraising.  These are ideas that children from about eight and up can get involved in through a local sports team or school functions.

Ice Cream Social. We all know the very famous and old saying, "I scream. You scream. We all scream for ice cream!" Here in the southwest it is already time to start thinking of great ways to cool off. Kids can dish out the ice cream and the toppings and help with the cleanup from this frosty and delicious fundraising event.

Car Washes are great spring and summer time fundraisers. A bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a hose is all that kids need to host a charity car wash. Have the kids make signs detailing which charity they are doing the car wash for, in order to maximize donations.  Many stores will give up part of their parking lots and even supply the water for your fundraiser.  Just ask!

Hold a Bake Sale at your church or school. Gather your group together to make and sell baked goods. If possible ask your church for permission to sell after your services.

Mix a hot summer day, some lemons, sugar and ice, what do you have? A Lemonade Stand. They are a great way for kids to raise money for your group or charity. Selling can teach your group the basics of small business as well. They can learn about the laws of supply and demand, they can even determine profit margins, these are life lessons that will stay with them forever.

Believe it or not, both boys and girls love Face Painting. A face painting booth is a fun and easy fundraising idea for older youth. Set-up a booth at a local festival or carnival and be sure have good signs that can tell your charity's needs and goals.

Go ahead and think green! Think Recycling! Kids can raise money and be environmentally responsible at the same time. Children can collect cans, newspapers or cardboard at home, as well as set up recycling bins at their parents’ workplaces, and bring them to their local recycler.
