Using Fundraising Press Releases

Before your group holds a fundraising project doing a local press release should increase the number of people who attend your event.  Your press release should have two goals.  The first goal is to inform the public about your event.  The second and perhaps the most important is to arouse interest in the press to write additional stories about your event.

Your intent should not be to write a complete story for the media to just copy and plop into their newspaper, on their blog or use on TV.

Your news release needs to contain just enough information to convince the reporter, blogger, editor or producer to call and get the rest of the information. The goal is to entice and persuade them to do a feature story. But you have to make it easy for the editor to do their job with a minimum investment in time and energy. You do this by giving them the information and facts they need to do their job.

You should be able to do this using between 400 to 600 hundred words.  If your press release is too long it may not be read.

You must paint a word picture that makes it easy to see the end product.  You want to include the follow highlights.

The name of the Organization and Event
Who benefits and what the money be used for
When the event will be held
Fundraising Monetary Goal
Community leaders or organizations Involved
What’s special about your organization?
Why or What is the crisis or need
What can people do to help
Where the event will be held
Name and phone and email of contacts for more information
Website URL for more information

If possible include a photo from previous events.

Call all of your media outlets and ask who is the correct person to send your press release to.
