Fundraising Don’ts

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask

Don’t let fear get in your way and don’t be afraid to ask. This is what the point behind the fundraising, asking for a donation. Some people feel that asking for money is somehow demoralizing or shameless but you have to take yourself out of the process. Your group depends on you to go out there and convince others of the legitimacy of your goals. And don’t scoff at any size donation. Every penny and dollar helps. And sometimes, yes, you’re going to have to come right out and ask for money so get comfortable with the concept from the very start.

Don’t Judge Others On Their Level of Giving

You may be convinced of the importance and worth of your personal cause but realize that there are other people out there that feel the same way about their cause. People get a third of their income taken away in taxes and the rest is used for saving and living expenses. If people are hesitant to part with their money you should realize that they work for that money. Just because they’re not giving half of their paycheck doesn’t mean that the donation came from the wrong place. Every little bit helps and you have to appreciate all of the donations in equal measure.

Don't Take 'No' For An Answer.

That may appear to contradict the previous statement but really it's all about cultivating a fundraising mentality along with a thick skin. If someone has a negative perception of your organization, cause, fundraising methods, or even of you personally (it can happen; don't upset yourself; it's not your fault) it is your job as a fundraiser to find out why this is the case and see if the matter can be remedied. The skill of fundraising consists in your ability to channel and not unnecessarily challenge perceptions.

Don’t Overwork Yourself

Lastly, you have to be careful, especially if you work for a small operation, not to wear yourself down. Don’t put undue stress or strain on your mental or physical health. You’ll be in a much better position to be a champion for a cause if you take results in stride. There will be lean years and there’ll be fat years. You just have to keep everything in perceptive and keep going.
