Raising Funds Effectively

Over the weekend I had the chance to watch a Cub Scout troop selling, or should I say trying to sell bags of popcorn outside of a local WalMart store.

First I must say that I don’t expect eight and nine year old to be professional salespeople.  But a simple and short training course would turn their efforts in a successful outing.

They had a central table set-up in the alcove of the store’s exterior and each entrance had two more scouts that were actually making the sales efforts.  As a person approached, the Scout would ask (at least most of the time) “wanna buy (some) popcorn?”

We have said it many times before, never, let me repeat that, NEVER ask a sales question that can be answered by “No!”  The cure is simple give each Scout two bags of popcorn and let them know that what they say, with a great big smile is “Do you want to buy one or two bags of our great tasting fresh popcorn?”  They could add “It is just $3.50 a bag!”

Simple and to the point and it would at least double, if not triple the sales.  With the sales being more successful you would have Scouts that would enjoy what they are doing and learning a great lesson about selling and life.

Another big error in this sale situation was when a person indicated they wanted to buy, the Scout directed the person to go to the table to make the purchase.  Not take them by the hand and lead them over, but just tell them that they had to go to the table to buy.  The best would have been to do the transaction them and there at the entrance.  Yes, that would have meant an adult by each entrance to help and increase safety.  But it seemed that even if the person said they would buy the extra effort to walk to the table 80 feet away caused at least half to just continue into the store with a promise to buy when they came out.  You can guess how well that promise was kept.

Of course we would want your group to sell the great Sunset Coupon Books, but at least we want you to know that there is a better way to sell and increase your success rate no matter what your are selling.
