No matter how large or how small your group or non-profit is you will run into various roadblocks as your try to raise funds.
Have you ever been told by a prospective donor or buyer, “All charities are scams!” ? - If so, what was your reaction? Did you write off the person as a lost cause? Did you make a negative or argumentative response?
If you want to see if you can open this door even just a crack you could start by a conditional agreement. “Yes, I know it must seem that way. There sure a lot of frauds and scams that try to pass themselves off as a legitimate charity. Especially now after this recent tragedy.” It doesn’t matter when this happens there is always a recent tragedy.
The response from your subject is the important key to whether you have the door open a crack or response was just ignored. If the contact has no response you a pretty much stuck. If this meeting is in person or by phone doesn’t matter.
If the subject responds with, “I sure didn’t expect you to agree with me” or anything else that is at all openly responsive will tell you that the subject might be open to hearing your story and your story better be a good one.
You could even follow-up with, “I’m sorry, Have you, a friend or family member been the victim of a scam?” Be ready to listen while the person relates their story. Your interest or suggestion may open the door even further.
You can always respond, “Decent people all over the area are helping us with… Yes, your story goes here. Ask the person what information they would like about your group so they can understand what work you are doing or what cause you are supporting.
Keep in mind that people give to people rather than just a photo or brochure. This interaction needs to be between two people rather than a “pitch”. It also never be a sermon or the preaching at the person.
You need to lead the person towards your goal rather than think that shame will be the key to a donation.
