I Can’t Sell – I Can’t Fundraise

Next to the fear of speaking in public is the fear of selling or being a salesperson.  Most folks are quite sure they can’t sell.  The rest simply don’t like selling at all.

This fear of selling usually comes from dealing with a poor or pushy salesperson in your past.  Every so often, we walk into a store and are immediately bombarded by a salesperson who needs to meet their quota for the day.  They attempt the hard sell, set up dressing rooms, force themselves on us, and put you in the uncomfortable position of having to repeatedly tell them “no.”

Bad salespeople are almost always the result of being poorly trained or motivated.  That type of selling, the used car style, gives all salespeople a bad rap.

The key to “good” selling is putting the customer’s needs first.  No matter what type of fundraising you are doing you are selling.  In some cases it is selling a physical product.  The profit from the sales goes to support your group.  In some cases the selling is the selling of your group.  Or selling the cause of your non-profit.  So how do you put the needs of the customer first when you are asking them to support “your” cause.

If your group is working to support children the underlying goal is to make them better citizens.  If they are good citizens the population as a whole would benefit.  That is helping your donor’s “life” as well. There are also receiving a direct benefit in buying the product you are selling.  You are selling something that has benefits for the buyer as well as your fundraising group?

Your group should never be selling something that you don’t see the value in.  You should never try to sell something that you would not consider buying.  Doing so puts the seller at a physiological disadvantage. You don’t feel truly positive about the item being sold and it will come across to your buyer.

If you want to do a better job for your school, sports team, youth group, church or non-profit you should consider getting some sales training or read a good book about the art of the soft sell.  If your selling is really the wrangling of children in your group at games or events then some basic training for your “group” may be in order.  Simple and proper training can make your charges much more effective and successful “saleskids”.
